Ich hänge da bei zwei Songs von IV fest, Is this Love..? and The Inevitable. Is this Love..? war übrigens mein erster Kontakt zu Spidergawd, und hat mich direkt umgehauen.
PB: Hehe…schwierige Frage.
Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio, Motorhead, Black Sabbath.
mh: Apropos Songwriting.
Red.: Monthy Python).
Sex hilft gegen Kater!
mh: Last but not least.

English Version
Hello Per! My name is Oliver and I’m happy to ask you some question for the German online-magazine metal-heads.de. On December 10th the new Spidergawd Album VI will finally be unleashed on the fans. In my opinion, you have created another great piece of music with this album. Enough of the preface, let’s get to the questions
So where does the name Spidergwad come from?
metal-heads (mh): First of all, a question about the band name: How did you come up with the idea to use the old English spelling Spidergawd?
Per Borten (PB): Spidergawd is a reference to a solo-album from Jerry Garcia. Our first bass-player, Bent Sæther came up with that name after seeing the cover-art for Spidergawd I. I’m no big Grateful dead-fan, but Bent Sæther and the new guitar-player Brynjar Takle Ohr are both true Dead-heads.
mh: As already mentioned, the album is once again a top one. What do you and the band think about number VI?
PB: I think we all agree that it might be our best one so far. -as it should be with the latest album, but yeah, the feeling is good. Seems like we’re growing more and more into some kind of Spidergawd-formula that we all embrace.
mh: Do you have a favourite among the nine new songs? I personally have two – At Rainbows End and Morning Star.
PB: It’s really hard to tell. The album was done 14 months ago. Once we go on the road with this album we’re bound to embrace some songs more than others. So….It is too early to tell for me. But we all agree that this album might be better than it’s predecessors in working as an entity.
I like listening to it, from start to end. I wouldn’t change anything anymore.
From favourite songs and „I’ll never play that again!“
mh: While we’re at it. Do you have one or two personal favourites from all your albums? I’m stuck on two songs from IV, Is this Love…? and The Inevitable. Is this Love…? was my first contact with Spidergawd, by the way, and it blew me away.
PB: Hehe…tough question. But I guess our live-sets tell, and have told the truth over the years.
But there are different songs for different purposes. A song like Stranglehold might not be an album favourite, but we have always played it live. The Inevitable is another one like that.
But we all have our different songs that we dislike within the band. -Which might piss off our audience.
Kenneth will never again play an old song called Empty Rooms, while I will never play one called Twentyfourseven…
And so on…
Saxophone, art and the numbers
mh: You guys are a little bit out of the ordinary as a band. Starting with the baritone saxophone, the very ingenious and beautiful album covers and also the simple numbering of the albums. How did you come up with these ideas? How do you know Emile Morel?
PB: Well…I guess the line-up in the band is my responsibility. I’ve dubbed bass-lines and chords with a baritone sax on my recordings from time to time over the years. The first recording I ever did also had that.
Emile Morel is a guy that I personally have never met. Our cover designer Håvard Gjelseth is the middelman there.
I choose the cover images tho. The dogma with the album-numbers is just what it is. Seemed like a nice little idea to begin with, and now we have to follow up on that. Which I certainly prefer. An album title might say more than I want to say about the albums.
New man and new sound?
mh: From your point of view, what has changed in the sound or in the band itself with the arrival of Brynjar Takle Ohr? Especially because he took over the co-songwriting with you on VI.
PB: I always try my best to write music for the other guys‘ taste in music. Brynjar really likes big stadium 80’s pop-music. And so I try to stretch for that as much as I find it sensible to do. I always need something to stretch for, and every album there might be something new. It might nor mean much to anybody else, but it really helps me out. It’s easy to „fall in love“ with Brynjar. He’s a really good guy, so if you knew him like I do I’m pretty sure you would try your best to meet his wishes too.
I think the amount of big choruses on this album might be inspired from me trying to meet Brynjars love for big pop-music.
mh: Did you have any special influences or significant experiences in mind when you were writing the songs?
PB: Yes. See answer to question above. 🙂
„Classic“ heavy metal is the biggest influence
mh: Influences – which bands have had the most influence on you or on the band?
PB: The list is off course just way too long ..but I understand the question. The easiest way to go about this is to name the bands that we all share a love for. Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio, Motorhead, Black Sabbath.
mh: Speaking of songwriting. Do you consider Spidergawd to be your baby?
PB: I guess you’re wondering if I think I feel more attached to the material than the others do.
Cus that is both the beauty and the beast of this band. Yes, I probably do more work for this band than the others all together.
Still, it is no more my band than anyone else’s. I can make a living out of it tho… I’m the only one who can.
But I really love the engagement that everybody shows for this band.
And, that each member of the band feels that he can call it „his band“.
mh: Would you like to tell us something about the departure of Rolf Martin Snustad? Why did he leave the band for a short time?
PB: Rolf Martin’s everyday life is way harder than for the rest of us. He has 1000 kids and a dayjob.
He will leave the band again. No doubt about it. And hopefully he will return to the band, again. Every time.
I think this was the 3rd time he quit…
Corona causes great boredom
mh: The press text writes about number VI that it is the album after THE longest hibernation ever. Does this mean the Corona pandemic?
PB: Yes, I guess so. It must be. Corona is THE most boring thing that has ever happened in my lifetime.
mh: While we are at it. How did you personally experience the past period? What did you hold on to in the difficult times? Was it family, friends or rather music?
PB: I own a big recording studio, and a small farm. I don’t run out of things to do. I won’t let anything like that affect my everyday life. It has almost bored me to death, so I’m affected that way.
I need to play some concerts every now and then to stay completely sane.
Who is Pedro Del Zorro, Moving Oos and what is Monthy Python doing here?
mh: During my reflections and internet research for the interview, I came across the name Pedro Del Zorro. What influence does he have on Spidergawd?
PB: Pedro Del Zorro is my alias when I play with my other band called Moving Oos. That band does play original stuff that is written by me, but it is also a professional backing ensemble.
Better with aliases in such occasions. One of my nicknames was always Per, the Red Fox, hence Pedro Del Zorro.
mh: And now for something completely different. Do you like Monty Python?
PB: Hehe…I understand the question, and so I guess I do.
Sex helps against hangovers!
mh: Last but not least. Christmas is just around the corner. How does Spidergawd celebrate the holiday?
PB: Like most northerners I guess…?
I hope to spend as much time as possible with my wife and daughter, eat unhealthy food, and go downhill skiing.
Pay my traditional visit to Rolf Martin, and eat his fermented trout-fish and drink deadly amounts of aquavit till I regret it for the next 5 days… Then, behave despicably needy towards my wife, claiming more sex might cure my hangover. And so on…
Same procedure as every year.
Thank you for your time and answering my questions. I wish you, your family and of course the whole band a Merry Christmas, a happy and healthy 2022 and a lot of success with Album VI and the following tour. I‘m looking forward to see Spidergawd in Essen!
