MILLHAVEN – „Dualism“ Review

MILLHAVEN (Facebook) gibt es schon seit 2012 (vorher hießen sie „The Curse Of Millhaven“) und seitdem hat sich die Bandstruktur nicht verändert. Das hat heutzutage schon seltenheitswert. „Dualism“ ist bereits das vierte Album der Band. MILLHAVEN stehen für kompromisslosen druckvollen Sound, der sich aus brachialem melodischen Death Metal und rasenden Black Metal-Vibes zusammensetzt.

Mag das Intro „Duality“ sich trotz kraftvollem Auftritt noch ein wenig zurückhalten, so wird beim Song „Hellfire“ unmissverständlich klar, in welche Richtung das Ganze geht. Hier geht es mit viel Prügel schnurstracks geradeaus, aber bitte mit Stil. Denn man hört sofort, dass die Show hier auf einem sehr hohen Niveau stattfindet. Mit unheimlich viel Dynamik und Power agieren die Jungs, wobei hemmungslos geile Riffs brennen und Leads durch den Sound fegen. Das sorgt genauso für Begeisterung wie die zerfetzenden Drums, die phänomenal geprügelt werden. Dabei sorgen die fließenden Rhythmuswechsel für einen maximal agilen Sound. Die martialischen Vocals versorgen das Soundmonster dann noch mit einem brutalen Biss.

Das wilde Gemetzel

setzt sich mit unglaublicher Raserei fort und es sind eindeutig auch Black Metal-Vibes zu spüren, die sich z.B. im Song „Day By Day“ mit vernichtender Energie entladen. Ein gnadenloser Angriff, der mit vielen soundtaktischen Raffinessen geführt wird. MILLHAVEN denken gar nicht daran eine Ruhepause einzulegen. Das durch und durch finstere „Maze“ gehört in die gleiche Kategorie und lotet die Grenze zum Black Metal aus.

Auch solche Einlagen wie beispielsweise im Song „Heartless“ sorgen für eine schöne Abwechslung. Die Härte und das Tempo werden zwischendurch kurz ein wenig zurückgefahren, um dann in einen gewaltigen Refrain überzugehen. Darüber hinaus wissen die Solos und Leads immer wieder vollkommen zu überzeugen uns sorgen zwischendurch hin und wieder ebenfalls für epische Ansätze, die sich im zerstörerischen Soundgewitter offenbaren. Davon könnte ihr euch auch beim Song „Bearer Of The Light“.

„Aspire“ als Schlußtrack drückt generell nicht so vehement auf das Tempo und präsentiert sich als schöner melodischer Midtempo-Brecher. Allerdings verstehe ich nicht, warum man diesen Song nur mit einer Spielzeit von 02:21 versehen hat. Ich finde, dass der Song viel mehr Potential gehabt hätte, um ihn über eine längere Distanz aufregend zu gestalten, zumal er sich vom restlichen Material etwas abhebt und eine andere Facette aufzeigt. Das Ende kommt dann unerwartet und plötzlich, was ich schade finde.

Fazit

MILLHAVEN sind pure Energie, die sich in jeder Faser der vernichtenden Songs auf „Dualism“ explosiv entlädt.

Das Album ist ein Sprint über 27 Minuten, der sehr schnell vorbei ist. Das ist so ein Zwitter zwischen EP und LP. Hätte man „Aspire“ mehr Spielzeit gegönnt und noch ein oder zwei Songs draufgepackt, dann wäre es perfekt gewesen. Alles in allem ändert dies aber nichts daran, dass hier verdammt geile Songs am Start sind.

MILLHAVEN (Facebook have been around since 2012 (previously they were called „The Curse Of Millhaven“) and the band structure hasn’t changed since then. That’s something of a rarity in this business. „Dualism“ is the band’s fourth album. MILLHAVEN stand for an uncompromising, powerful sound made up of brute melodic death metal and raging black metal vibes.

The intro „Duality“ may still be a little restrained despite its powerful performance, but the song „Hellfire“ makes it unmistakably clear in which direction the whole thing is heading. It runs straight ahead with a lot of thrashing on a high technical level. The guys act with an incredible amount of dynamism and power, with unrestrainedly awesome riffs burning and leads sweeping through the sound. This causes just as much excitement as the phenomenal drumming. The flowing rhythm changes ensure a maximally agile sound. The martial vocals provide the sound monster with a brutal bite.

The wild carnage

continues with tremendous fury and black metal vibes rages in, which are discharged with devastating energy in the song „Day By Day“, for example. A merciless attack that is conducted with many sound tactical refinements. MILLHAVEN don’t even think about taking a break. The thoroughly sinister „Maze“ belongs in the same category and explores the boundaries of black metal.

Interludes such as those in the song „Heartless“ also provide a nice change of pace. The heaviness and tempo are reduced a little from time to time, only to change into a powerful chorus. In addition, the solos and leads are always completely convincing and occasionally provide epic approaches that reveal themselves in the destructive thunderstorm of sound. You can also get a taste of this with the song „Bearer Of The Light“.

„Aspire“, the final track, generally doesn’t push the tempo so vehemently and presents itself as a nice melodic mid-tempo breaker. However, I don’t understand why they gave this song a playing time of only 02:21. I think that the song would have had much more potential to make it exciting over a longer distance, especially as it stands out a bit from the rest of the tracks and shows a different facet. The end comes unexpectedly and suddenly.

Conclusion

MILLHAVEN are pure energy that discharges explosively in every fiber of the devastating songs on „Dualism“.

The album is a 27-minute sprint that is over very quickly. It’s like a hybrid between an EP and an LP. If „Aspire“ had been given more playing time and one or two more songs had been added, it would have been perfect. All in all, however, this doesn’t change the fact that there are some damn great songs on here.
