TUNGSTEN „The Grand Inferno“ Review

TUNGSTEN (Facebook/Homepage) aus Schweden haben 2019 ihr Debüt „We Will Rise“ veröffentlicht. Die Songs darauf würde ich in die Kategorie melodischer Power Metal mit Folktouch einordnen. Danach gab es noch die Alben „Tundra“ (2020) und „Bliss“ (2022). Tatsächlich waren die Alben für mich zu harmlos geraten, auch wenn die Songs durchaus ihre Qualität und manche Highlights zu bieten hatten. Das Debüt hat mir noch am besten gefallen. Hier seien mal beispielhaft die Songs „Sweet Vendetta“ und „Animals“ genannt, die ich echt geil finde. Doch TUNGSTEN haben mit ihrem aktuellen Album „The Grand Inferno“ wieder mächtig zugelegt. Nun würde ich die Einordnung in den Power Metal Sektor nicht mehr so eindeutig vornehmen, denn am Sound hat sich ganz schön was getan.

Natürlich hat man den Sound jetzt nicht grundlegend umgestrickt. Die erste Single „Walborg“ versprüht immer noch diese Power Metal Vibes und kommt mit einem perfekten Mitsing-Refrain daher. Eine kurzweilige Nummer mit einem Höchstmaß an Eingängigkeit, die sich unwiderstehlich im Kopf festsetzt. Also direkt mal reingehört….

Der Song handelt übrigens von dem Valborg-Fest, das in Schweden und Finnland am 30. April gefeiert wird. Es ist das Pendant zu der deutschen Walpurgisnacht. Es ist eine sehr alte Tradition, die seit dem Mittelalter gefeiert wird. Es werden Lagefeuer angezündet, um den Winter zu verabschieden und den Frühling zu begrüßen. Darüber hinaus sollen bei dem heidnischen Fest böse Geister vertrieben werden.

Charakteristischer innovativer Mix

Auf dem neuen Album ist man meiner nach einen großen Schritt weitergekommen, um einen innovativen Sound zu entwickeln, der zwar noch die Power Metal Gene in sich trägt, aber nun ist man auf einem anderen Level angelangt. Ich finde, dass sie jetzt eine stärkere eigene musikalische Identität gewonnen haben. Witzigerweise ist es aber gerade der älteste Song, der auf dem Album besonders hervorsticht. Hä? Wieso ältester Song?

Nun, der Song „Vantablack“ ist nach Aussage der Band der erste Song, welcher damals für die Band geschrieben wurde und dann seinen Platz auf dem Debüt finden sollte. Aber irgendwie ist er dann irgendwie in Vergessenheit geraten und ging dann im ganzen Songmaterial unter. Zum Glück fand er seinen Weg zurück an die Oberfläche, indem die Band irgendwann die Demoaufnahme des Songs dem Präsidenten des Fanclubs ‚Tungsten Fans Worldwide‘ vorspielte und dieser sofort den Wunsch äußerte, dass der Song noch einmal vernünftig aufgenommen werden und unbedingt auf das nächste Album kommen müsse.

Am Anfang fliegen euch fette industrial Rammstein-Vibes um die Ohren, was man z.b. auch schon mal beim Song „The Fairies Dance“ auf dem Vorgängeralbum verwendet hat. Megafette Riffs und feuernde Stakkato Drums reißen euch den Arsch auf, doch plötzlich kommt ein butterweicher Refrain hervorgeschossen. Was für ein gigantischer Kontrast! Diese Rammstein-Vibes kommen nicht nur beim Song „Vantablack“ zum tragen, sondern finden sich hier und dort immer mal wieder.

Mehr Power

Auf jeden Fall muss man Tungsten zugestehen, dass sie ihrem Sound eine stattliche Portion Power eingeflöst haben, sich aber trotzdem das Merkmal bewahren, fantastische Melodiebögen zu erschaffen, die sich wunderbar einschmeicheln. Aber der Mix ist interessanter und vielfältiger geworden und strotzt nur so vor Ideen. Diese Ideen entsprechen sicherlich nicht einem konventionellen Soundkonzept, aber das wollen TUNGSTEN ja auch gar nicht. Daher denke ich auch, dass „Vantablack“ meiner Meinung nach im Gesamtkonzept der bisherigen Alben auch zu krass gewesen wäre. Auf dem aktuellen Album passt er jedoch hervorragend rein, da man im Songwriting viel mutiger auftritt, indem man mir stärkeren Kontrasten spielt. Kommen wir zu einem Song, der genau in die andere Richtung geht.

Der Titelsong „The Grand Inferno“ beginnt balladesk und äußerst gefühlvoll. Jedoch nimmt der Song dann Fahrt auf und steigert sich zu einem maximal epischen Erlebnis. Eine wundervolle Darbietung!

„The Grand Inferno“ handelt von dem Gefühl, lange Zeit unbemerkt oder ignoriert zu werden. Der Song folgt einer Reise von jemandem, der im Hintergrund bleibt, fast unsichtbar. Aber am Ende macht er eine große Veränderung durch und kommt schließlich auf eine kraftvolle Art und Weise zur Geltung, wie eine Explosion oder ein Ausbruch von Flammen. Es geht darum, wie sie ihre Stärke finden und eine starke Wirkung erzielen, wenn sie endlich zeigen, wer sie wirklich sind.

Ich würde mal sagen, dass der folkische Charakter ein wenig zurückgefahren wurde und man nun etwas moderner und experimenteller zu Werke geht, auch was den Härtegrad betrifft. „Falling Apart“ ist wirbelt mit kräftigen schweren Groove Metal Schlägen herum, was durch die Vocals mit extremen Attacken noch intensiviert wird. Das knallt dich einfach weg! Und es ist der Hammer, denn sogar hier schaffen es TUNGSTEN dem Ganzen noch einen geilen melodischen Refrain zu verpassen ohne das es komisch wirkt.

Ich hatte vorhin schon diese fetten Riffs angesprochen, die mich sofort an Rammstein erinnern. Auch „Me, Myself, My Enemy“ ist damit geimpft, bietet dabei aber wieder einmal in seiner ganzen Komposition einen ganz speziellen abenteuerlichen Mix. Vor allem die quietschigen Synthies in Verbindung mit den harten Riffs und dem wummernden sind schon echt speziell, aber mir gefällts. Auch beim Gesang wird wieder eine breite Palette geboten.

Ich kann mir zwar nicht vorstellen, dass jetzt noch jemand Zweifel an der teils verrückten Kreativität von TUNGSGTEN hat, aber dann sollte euch spätestens der Song „Lullaby“ davon überzeugen, wo man sogar auch Kindergesänge verarbeitet hat. In dem Song geht es darum, dass eine Mutter ihr Kind opfert, um für immer jung zu bleiben. Doch das Kind kehrt zurück und rächt sich….

Auch wenn der Sound sehr modern rüberkommt, so legt man dann doch noch wert auf klassische Zutaten wie beispielsweise zünftige eindrucksvoll dargebotene Gitarrensolos, so auch beim Song „Blood Of The Kings“. Und die Videos sind wirklich sehr unkonventionell gestaltet. Das zieht sich so ein wenig wie ein roter Faden. Schon sehr funny.

Das lyrische Thema des Songs handelt von unserem eigenen Erbe. In den letzten Jahren hat sich Anders sehr für Ahnenforschung interessiert und herausgefunden, dass wir Wikinger-Gene haben, und darum geht es in dem Lied. Man kann sagen, dass es um unser Erbe geht.

Fazit

TUNGSTEN sind mit ihrem Album „The Grand Inferno“ auf das nächste Level gesprungen. Die Musik mit ihren teils recht düsteren Texten ist innovativ und speziell, dabei gleichzeitig höchst unterhaltsam. So haben TUNGSTEN ihre eigene Nische gefunden. Es ist ein sehr eigenwillige, aber faszinierende Mischung, welche TUNGSTEN hier mit 11 Songs bieten. „The Grand Inferno“ ist ein sehr inspirierendes Album!

TUNGSTEN (Facebook/Homepage) from Sweden released their debut album „We Will Rise“ in 2019. I would categorise the songs on it as melodic power metal with a folk touch. After that, there were the albums „Tundra“ (2020) and „Bliss“ (2022). In fact, these albums were a bit too harmless for me, even if the songs certainly had their quality and some highlights to offer. I still liked the debut the best. For example I’d like to mention the songs „Sweet Vendetta“ and „Animals“, which I think are really cool. But TUNGSTEN have really stepped up their game with their new album „The Grand Inferno“. Now I wouldn’t categorise them so clearly in the power metal sector, because the sound has changed quite a bit.

Of course, the sound has not been fundamentally reworked. The first single „Walborg“ still exudes those power metal vibes and comes with a perfect sing-along chorus. An entertaining number with a high degree of catchiness that irresistibly sticks in your head. So listen to it right away….

Incidentally, the song is about the Valborg festival, which is celebrated in Sweden and Finland on 30 April. It is the counterpart to the German Walpurgisnacht. It is a very old tradition that has been celebrated since the Middle Ages. Bonfires are lit to bid farewell to winter and welcome spring. The pagan festival is also believed to drive away evil spirits.

Characteristic innovative mix

On the new album, I think they have taken a big step forward in developing an innovative sound that still carries the power metal genes, but now they have reached another level. I think that they have now gained a stronger musical identity of their own. Funnily enough, it’s the oldest song on the album that stands out in particular. Huh? Why oldest song?

Well, the song „Vantablack“ is, according to the band, the first song that the band wrote back then and was to find its place on the debut. But somehow it fell into oblivion and then got lost in all the song material. Fortunately, it found its way back to the surface when the band played the demo recording of the song to the president of the fan club ‚Tungsten Fans Worldwide‘ and he immediately expressed the wish that the song should be properly recorded again and should definitely be included on the next album.

At the beginning, fat industrial Rammstein vibes fly around your ears, which was also used in the song „The Fairies Dance“ on the previous album, for example. Brutal riffs and fiery staccato drums rip your arse off, but suddenly a buttery-soft chorus shoots out. What a gigantic contrast! These Rammstein vibes don’t just come to the fore in the song „Vantablack“, but can be found here and there from time to time.

More power

In any case, you have to admit that Tungsten have injected their sound with a considerable amount of power, but still retain the ability to create fantastic melodic arcs that are wonderfully ingratiating. But the mix has become more interesting and diverse and is bursting with ideas. These ideas certainly don’t correspond to a conventional sound concept, but that’s not what TUNGSTEN want. That’s why I also think that „Vantablack“ would have been too blatant in the overall concept of the previous albums. On the current album, however, it fits in perfectly, as the songwriting is much bolder, playing with stronger contrasts. Let’s move on to a song that goes in exactly the opposite direction.

The title track „The Grand Inferno“ begins ballad-like and extremely soulful. However, the song then picks up speed and escalates into a maximally epic experience. A wonderful performance!

The title track, „The Grand Inferno“ is about the feeling to be unnoticed or ignored for a long time. The song follows a journey of someone who stays in the background, almost invisible. But by the end, they go through a big change and finally come into their own in a powerful way, like an explosion or a burst of flames. It’s about how they find their strength and make a strong impact when they finally show who they really are.

I would say that the folk character has been scaled back a little and the band is now a bit more modern and experimental, also in terms of heaviness. „Falling Apart“ swirls around with powerful heavy groove metal beats, which is intensified by the vocals with extreme attacks. It simply blows you away! And it’s awesome, because even here TUNGSTEN manage to give the whole thing a great melodic chorus without it sounding weird.

I already mentioned these fat riffs earlier, which immediately remind me of Rammstein. „Me, Myself, My Enemy“ is also inoculated with them, but once again offers a very special adventurous mix in its entire composition. Especially the squeaky synths in combination with the hard riffs and the booming are really special, but I like it. The vocals also offer a wide range.

I can’t imagine that anyone still has any doubts about the sometimes crazy, but brave creativity of TUNGSGTEN, but then you should be convinced by the song „Lullaby“ at the latest, where they have even incorporated children’s songs. The song is about a mother sacrificing her child in order to stay young forever. But the child returns and takes revenge….

Even though the sound comes across as very modern, the band still emphasises classic ingredients such as impressive guitar solos, as in the song „Blood Of The Kings“. And the videos are really very unconventionally designed. It’s a bit like a common thread. Very funny.

The lyrical theme of the song is about our own heritage. The last couple of years Anders has been very interested in genealogy and found that we have Viking genes so that is what the song is about. One can say that it’s about our heritage.

Conclusion

TUNGSTEN have jumped to the next level with their album ‘The Grand Inferno’. The music with its partly dark lyrics is innovative and special, but at the same time highly entertaining. TUNGSTEN have found their own specific niche. It is a very idiosyncratic but fascinating mixture that TUNGSTEN offer here with 11 songs. „The Grand Inferno“ is a very inspiring album!
