DREAM EVIL (Facebook) aus Schweden gibt es seit 1999. Die ersten Alben wurden ziemlich schnell hintereinander veröffentlicht. Dann wurden die Pausen länger. Das letzte Album „Six“ ist nun sieben Jahre her und ich kann nur hoffen, dass DREAM EVIL nen bisschen heavy Power draufgepackt haben, denn bei mir hatte es nicht so richtig gezündet. Sicherlich gut gemacht, aber am Ende doch etwas lahm und wenig kreativ.

Dann wollen wir gleich mal einsteigen. Der Titeltrack „Metal Gods“ wird gleich zu Beginn präsentiert und haut mich leider nicht wirklich aus den Socken. Hört sich nett an und erfüllt den Standard eines guten Power Metal Songs, aber auch nicht mehr. So einen Song habe ich schon etliche Male woanders gehört. Allerdings gefällt mir das Vorspiel zum Solo und das Solo selber echt gut. Doch nach sieben Jahren müsste ein Album mit einem richtigen Knaller beginnen und das ist er für mich jedenfalls nicht.

Da sagen mir andere Songs auf dem Album mehr zu. Schon der zweite Track „Chosen Force“ spricht mich erheblich mehr an. Die Gitarren mit den epischen Synthies und Gesangslinien wecken bei mir 80’er Jahre Metal Feeling. Da kann man bei mir schon mal punkten. Handwerklich kann man hier gar nicht meckern. Und die Vocals von Niklas Isfeldt sind wirklich stark. „Chosen Force“ ist somit eine wirklich ansprechende Retro-Hymne geworden.

Bei der stolzen Fregatte „The Tyrant Dies At Dawn“ paaren sich Heavy Metal und Power Metal zu einer sehr geschmackvollen Mischung. Dazu gibt Markus Fristedt noch ein schönes Solo an Deck und feuert die Mannschaft an, die mit aufmunternden Chören die Stimmung anheizt. Da kann ich nur sagen: Segel setzen, ab in den Wind und tanzt auf den Wellen! So geht es mit viel Abenteuerlust auf die Meere!

Ja, auf dem Album erklingen kraftvolle Songs, die einen mitreißen. Dazu gehört z.B. „Born In Hell“. Der flotte Banger macht eine gute Figur, aber man wird irgendwie das Gefühl nicht los, dass man alles schon mal irgendwie woanders gehört hat. Auch „Fight In The Night“ kommt mit ordentlich Power rüber und weiß zu gefallen. Es ist ebenfalls einer der stärkeren Songs auf dem Album.

Fazit

Von einer Band wie DREAM EVIL, die schon so lange im Geschäft ist, hätte ich tatsächlich mehr erwartet. Schon das letzte Album „Six“ war nicht so der flammende Burner. Zwar ist das neue Album „Metal Gods“ besser, aber so richtig vom Hocker hauen tut es mich auch nicht. Das Album besteht aus soliden Songs, die handwerklich und produktionstechnisch gut gemacht sind, aber der Funke will bei mir, abgesehen von einigen Highlights, häufig nicht so richtig überspringen. Es fehlt oft an kreativen Ideen und an durchschlagender Power. DREAM EVIL gehen kein Risiko ein und bieten solide Kost, aber um aus der Masse glanzvoll herauszustechen, reicht es meiner Meinung nach nicht. Ich hätte den Männern mehr Mut und Draufgängertum schon zugetraut. Das Potential wäre mehr als genug vorhanden.

DREAM EVIL (Facebook) from Sweden have been around since 1999 and released their first albums in quick succession. Then the breaks became longer. The last album „Six“ was released seven years ago and I can only hope that DREAM EVIL have packed some heavy power on the new album „Metal Gods“, because „Six“ didn’t really grap me. „Six“ was certainly well done, but in the end a bit lame and not very creative.

Let’s get right into „Metal Gods“. The title track is presented right at the beginning and unfortunately doesn’t really knock my socks off. It sounds nice and fulfills the standard of a good power metal song, but nothing more. I’ve heard a song like this many times elsewhere. However, I really like the prelude to the solo and the solo itself. But after seven years, an album should start with a real banger and that’s certainly not the case for me.

Other songs on the album appeal to me more. The second track „Chosen Force“ already appeals to me much better. The guitars with the epic synths and vocal lines evoke an 80s metal feeling for me. They score points for that. You can’t complain about the craftsmanship here. And Niklas Isfeldt’s vocals are really strong. „Chosen Force“ has thus become a really appealing retro anthem.

The proud frigate „The Tyrant Dies At Dawn“ combines heavy metal and power metal to create a very tasty mixture. Markus Fristedt gives a nice solo on deck and cheers on the crew, who heat up the atmosphere with encouraging choirs. All I can say is: set sail, head into the wind and ride on the waves! That’s the way to ecourage an adventure on the sea.

Yes, there are powerful songs on the album that carry you away. This includes „Born In Hell“, for example. The snappy banger cuts a fine figure, but somehow you can’t shake off the feeling that you’ve heard it all somewhere else before. Fight In The Night“ also comes across with a lot of power and is very appealing. It is also one of the stronger songs on the album.

Conclusion

I actually expected more from a band like DREAM EVIL, who have been in the business for so long. Even the last album „Six“ wasn’t such a flaming burner. The new album „Metal Gods“ is better, but it doesn’t really knock me off my feet either. The album consists of solid songs that are well crafted and well produced, but apart from a few highlights, the spark often doesn’t really jump out at me. There is often a lack of creative ideas and resounding power. DREAM EVIL don’t take any risks and offer solid fare, but in my opinion it’s not enough to stand out from the crowd. I would have expected more courage and bravado from the men. They have more than enough potential for that.
