Es ist soweit! Wir gehen in das Licht! METALHEADS Toplist 2022 wird heute das Finale für das Jahr 2022 einläuten und wie es sich für eine Finale gehört, wird es gewaltig werden. Es war wieder einmal eine tolle Erfahrung das ganze Jahr mit all seinen grandiosen Veröffentlichungen Revue passieren zu lassen. Eigentlich bräuchte ich zwei oder drei Leben, um all diese fantastische Musik zu genießen, die mittlerweile existiert und immer weiter über uns hereinbricht.

Nur ein Narr könnte von sich behaupten in der heutigen Zeit einen kompletten Überblick über die Rock- und Metalszene zu haben. Die Zeiten sind vorbei. Gerade im Underground tummeln sich so viele geile Bands, die es wert sind gehört zu werden. So bin ich froh, dass es neben ‚metal-heads.de‘ auch andere Magazine gibt, die sich der Musik widmen und vielleicht Alben und Bands präsentieren, die uns durch die Lappen gegangen sind. Jetzt aber weiter zu meiner Toplist.

Es gibt Alben, die mich dieses Jahr total abgeholt haben, wobei mir aber in deren Kategorie kein anderes Album zu Ohren gekommen ist, welches vergleichbar gewesen wäre. Und damit möchte ich beginnen, bevor ich mit der Kategorie abschließe, in der ich für mich das Album des Jahres gefunden habe.

BLOODYWOOD

Vielleicht haben sich manche schon gefragt, wo die zweite indische Band bleibt, die ich zu Beginn meiner Toplist erwähnt habe. Neben GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES sind das BLOODYWOOD (Facebook). Zwei Bands, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten.

BLOODYWOOD haben einen völlig innovativen Sound erschaffen und hauen Euch einzigartigen indischen Folk Metal um die Ohren. Neben der Black Metal Band WHITE WARD für mich eine völlig neue musikalische Erfahrung. Im Februar erschien das Album „Rakshak“. Nach dem Start dauert es nur einige Sekunden, bis die Bombe platzt und Schockwellen von fettem rifflastigen Groove sich massiv ausbreiten. Verdammt noch mal! Was für ein bombastischer umwerfender Sound! Hat stellenweise etwas von SLIPKNOT, geht aber ganz eigene andere Wege. Der Song „Gadaar“ ist ein richtiger Smasher, der Euch sofort mitreißt! Glaubt Ihr nicht? Na dann zieht Euch das mal rein…

Diese typischen indischen Klänge einer Tumbi (einsaitiges Zupfinstrument) rocken so was von und fügen sich geradezu perfekt in den Groovecore-Sound ein. Aber damit ist mit den Besonderheiten noch nicht getan. Zwei Sänger schmettern hier die Texte aus einem indischen und englischen Mix. Da wäre zum einen Jayant Bhadula, der mit seinem engergiegeladenen Shouting alles in Grund und Boden schreit. Und sein Mitstreiter Raoul Kerr rapt seine Parts nicht minder eindrucksvoll mit voller Wucht in die Fresse.

Bei BLOODYWOOD gibt es eine breite Range: Von harmonischem Gefühl und epischen Momenten bis hemmungslose Wut und unbändige Kraft ist alles dabei. Es gibt viele richtiger Burner auf dem Album, die einfach genial sind. Alles in allem fackeln BLOODYWOOD mit ihrem Album „Rakshar“ eine Wahnsinnsshow ab. Man wird von der explosiven machtvollen Energie besessen und mitgerissen.

MÅNEGARM

MÅNEGARM (Facebook) waren dieses Jahr die einzigen, die mich mit ihrem Album „Ynglingaättens Öde“ in der Sparte Viking-Metal überzeugt haben. Ihren Sound zeichnet die Verbindung mit folkloristischen Elementen aus. Vielseitigkeit ist Trumpf auf diesem Album, das mit ganz unterschiedlichen Facetten glänzen kann. (Review)

Es ist schon ungewöhnlich das Album mit dem epischen zehnminütigen Track „Freyrs Blod“ einzuleiten. Doch der Song überzeugt auf ganzer Linie und bietet ein episches Erlebnis. Für den Song „Stridsgalten“ haben sich diverse namenhafte Gastmusiker der Gilde angeschlossen und ihren Beitrag geleistet. Jonne Järvelä (Korpiklaani), Robse Dahn (Equilibrium) und Pär Hulkoff (Raubtier/Hulkoff) stehen mit den MÅNEGARM-Mannen Seite an Seite und schmettern einen Wahnsinnssong raus. Ein Song, der schon mit seinem mächtigen stampfenden Beginn die Erde erschüttern und die Vikingerherzen höher schlagen lässt. Plötzlich folgt der Angriff und die Krieger rasen nach vorne. Der Song fliegt unter galoppierenden Trommeln davon. Der Song spielt mit ganz verschiedenen Stimmungen, verliert dabei aber nie das heroische epische Gefühl.

Um die Vielseitigkeit des Albums zu verdeutlichen, möchte ich hier als Kontrastprogramm den Song „En snara av guld“ erwähnen. Dieser zaubert mit einer wunderbaren melancholischen Stimmung eine besondere Atmosphäre hervor. Eigens für diesen emotionalen Song hat Erik Grawsiös Tochter Lea Grawsiö Lindström die sanften gefühlvollen Gesänge einfließen lassen. Hört mal selbst. Ein faszinierender Song mit einem beeindruckenden Video.

Heavy Metal

Nur noch ein wenig Geduld und Ihr werdet erfahren, was mein Album des Jahres ist. Doch vorher einige Highlights aus der Kategorie Heavy Metal.

Nicklas Sonne

Den Beginn macht Nicklas Sonne (Facebook) mit seinem Solo-Debütalbum „Resonance“, das den rockigen Heavy Metal lebt. Es ist ein Album geworden, dass man von vorne bis hinten in Dauerschleife hören kann. Es gibt keinen Grund, dass Album „Resonance“ von Nicklas Sonne nicht zu lieben. Euch erwarten fantastische Songs, die modern und frisch klingen. Die Songs erblühen alle mit einer leuchtenden berauschenden Kraft, die den Hörer durchströmt und das Herz mit Freude und Stärke erfüllt. Eine ganz tolle beachtliche Leistung und umso bewundernswerter, weil es ein Soloalbum ist.

Als Songbeispiel führe ich „Spit Out Your Pride“ an. Es geht nicht zimperlich zur Sache, sondern rennt schnurstracks nach vorne und glänzt mit einem epischen Chorus, wobei das ausgiebige Solo mal wieder erstklassig gerockt wird.

Das Video zum Thema Arroganz und Überheblichkeit, fehlender Empathie und Toleranz anderen gegenüber ist hervorragend umgesetzt und Nicklas ist sich auch für ein wenig Selbstironie nicht zu schade und repräsentiert als Hauptdarsteller in seinem Video genau die oben genannten charakterlichen Hässlichkeiten.

MACHINE HEAD

Es gibt einen groben Stilbruch und wir befinden uns nun im brettharten Heavy Metal, der düster und hart interpretiert wird. Es war noch nie das Ding von Mastermind Robb Flynn auf der Stelle rumzutreten und sich in eine enge Metal-Schublade stecken zu lassen. Er liebte es immer mal wieder mit dem Sound zu experimentieren. So verwundert es nicht, dass sich auf dem neuen Album „ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN“ wieder verschiedene Stile einfließen. Aber diesmal ist diese Mischung wirklich sehr gelungen.

Der Opener „Slaughter The Martyr“ startet mit einer atmosphärischen melancholischen Einleitung. Es hat zunächst einen balladeske Charakter, bevor der Song selbstverständlich noch in den Angriffsmodus wechselt und später noch hymnenhafte Züge mit epischen Charakter annimmt. Mit „Choke On The Ashes Of Your Hate“ folgt ein astreiner Thrash-Banger der geilsten Sorte. Hier werden Euch die Nacken weichgeprügelt. Dazu gesellen sich hammerharte fiese Tempiwechsel und Breakdowns, die es verdammt hart in sich haben. Das Gitarrensolo ist verrückt und wahnsinnig. Der Song strotzt nur so vor Wut und Wahnsinn. Die Lyrics werden in brutalster Form rausgebrüllt. Ein Song wie ein Unwetter und grollendem Donner, der kein Stein auf dem anderen lässt.

MACHINE HEAD liefern mit „“ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN“ eine faszinierende Geschichte. Die musikalisch vielfältigen Kapitel verkörpern die Erzählung gekonnt und sind mit viel Sorgfalt erschaffen worden, um die jeweiligen Charaktäre so wie deren Handlungen und Empfindungen darzustellen. Es ist ein echt gutes Album mit vielen geilen Momenten geworden, dass eindrucksvoll aufzeigt, dass mit Robb Flynn immer noch zu rechnen ist und er sein Pulver noch lange nicht verschossen hat. In ihm steckt noch genügend kreative Power! (Review)

UNDERTOW

UNDERTOW (Facebook) haben ihr neuntes Album „Bipolar“ über El Puerto Records veröffentlicht.Der Sound reicht von reißerischen Zerstörern bis hin zu langsamen melancholischen Songs. So extrem und ausgereift wie auf dem aktuellen Album hat man sie aber noch nie gehört. Den unorthodoxen Anfang macht der sehr schwermütige Song „When Tears Became Scars“. Wo sonst ein Song den Hörer aufrütteln soll, macht sich erst einmal Schwermut breit.

So gemächlich und schwermütig der erste Song rüberkommt, desto mehr geht der zweite Song „On Fire“ ab. Mit richtig Schmackes wechselt man in einen furiosen wütenden Angriff. Das Tempo wird stürmisch und peitscht brutal thrashig nach vorne. Fiese sägende Riffs fräsen ein Schneise in die Gehirnwindungen. Sänger Joschi brüllt einem mit voller Wucht die Lyrics in die Fresse, dass einem die Haare zu Berge stehen. Geil finde ich die eingestreuten sirenenartigen Leads, die noch mal gewaltig Zündstoff bieten. Sehr cool ist auch der groovige stampfende Rhythmuswechsel, bevor das megamäßige fetzige Gitarrensolo abgefeuert wird und sich ein längerer melodischer Instrumentalpart anschließt.

Gemäß dem Albumtitel „Bipolar“ wird mit extrem gegensätzlichen Stimmungen gespielt. Es ist ein Auf und Ab der Gefühlswelt, eine emotionale Achterbahn. UNDERTOW haben mit „Bipolar“ ein intensives Album erschaffen. Sie haben vielschichtige Songs geschmiedet, die in allen Bereichen so ausgereift wie nie zuvor klingen. Das Songwriting ist komplexer geworden, so dass sowohl die Instrumentalfraktion als auch die Vocals mehr Raffinesse und Ausdruckskraft zu bieten haben. Ein Hammeralbum! Mutig und stark! (Review)

DIABLO

DIABLO (Facebook) haben ihr Album „When All The Rives Are Silent“ im Februar veröffentlicht und ich hatte mich auf der Stelle in das Album verliebt. Und trotz sehr starker Konkurrenz ist das Album nach wie vor genauso beeindruckend wie beim ersten Hören. Ich hatte damals schon prophezeit, dass dieses Album schwer zu übertreffen sein wird. Und ich sollte recht behalten.

Hier stimmt einfach alles!

Die kraftvolle charismatische Stimme von Sänger Rainer Nygård klingt besser als je zuvor. Die düsteren druckvollen Passagen messen sich mit melodischen Einlagen, wobei die insgesamt dynamische Entfaltung nicht aus den Augen verloren wird. Die Gitarren werden phänomenal bespielt, egal ob es die bestechenden Riffs, die großartigen Leads oder die imposanten Gitarrensolos betrifft. Heikki Malmberg an den Drums macht hier mächtig Dampf und sorgt zusammen mit Basser Aadolf Virtanen für einen hervorragenden Flow.

Hört Euch beispielsweise „The Stranger“ an. Es beginnt heftig mit starken Riffs und einem kernigen Bass, wechsel dann in einen behutsamen Zwischenpart, um dann einen megamäßigen Refrain zu offenbaren, der in epischer Verzweiflung mit einer immensen Kraft ergreifend dargeboten wird. Pure Emotionen, die meine Seele überfluten. Wunderschön und auf seine eigene intensive Weise sehr ergreifend! Ich kann gar nicht sagen wie oft ich diesen Song gehört habe, weil er mich einfach so berührt.

DIABLO beehren uns mit ihrem monstermäßigen Album „When All The Rivers Are Silent“! Dabei muss man vom ausgereiftesten Werk ihrer Karriere reden. Das Album trifft voll ins Schwarze! An diesem Album gibt es nichts auszusetzen. Es gibt keinen Song, der Mittelmaß ist. Hier wird ein besonderer Moment nach dem anderen hervorgezaubert. Mach irgendeinen Song an und er wird dich packen!

Der Sound bietet eine perfekte unterhaltsame Mischung aus kreativer drastische Härte und epischen emotionalen Momenten. Dabei gibt sich Sänger Rainer Nygård vielseitig. Die instrumentalen Fähigkeiten der Band sind unbestritten eine Meisterleistung und die Kompositionen sind einfach wunderbar konzipiert. Mich hat das Album in allen Belangen vollkommen überzeugt. Lob und Anerkennung für diese Meisterleistung!

English review

The time has come! We are going into the light! METALHEADS Toplist 2022 will kick off the finale for the year 2022 today and as it should be for a finale, it’s going to be massive. Once again, it’s been a great experience to review the whole year with all its terrific releases. Actually, I would need two or three lifetimes to enjoy all this fantastic music that exists by now and keeps coming.

Only a fool could claim to have a complete overview of the Rock and Metal scene in this day and age. Those times are over. Especially in the underground there are so many cool bands that are worth listening to. So I’m glad that there are other magazines besides ‚metal-heads.de‘ that are dedicated to music and maybe present albums and bands that have slipped through our fingers. But now on to my toplist.

There are albums that have totally thrilled me this year, but I have not heard of any other album in their category that would have been comparable. And I want to start with that before I finish with the category where I found the album of the year for me.

BLOODYWOOD

Maybe some have already wondered where the second Indian band is that I mentioned at the beginning of my toplist. Besides GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES they are BLOODYWOOD (Facebook). Both bands that could not be more different.

BLOODYWOOD have created a completely innovative sound and hit you with unique Indian Folk Metal. Next to the Black Metal band WHITE WARD for me a completely new musical experience. In February the album „Rakshak“ was released. After the start it takes only a few seconds until the bomb bursts and shock waves of fat riff-heavy groove spread massively. Bloody hell! What a bombastic mind blowing sound! Has something of SLIPKNOT in places, but goes its own different ways. The song „Gadaar“ is a real smasher that will immediately blast you away. Don’t you think? Well then check it out…

These typical Indian sounds of a tumbi (one-stringed plucked instrument) rock so great and fit almost perfectly into the Groovecore sound. But that’s not the end of the special features. Two singers belt out the lyrics from an Indian and English mix. On the one hand there is Jayant Bhadula, who screams everything into the ground with his engergic shouting. And his comrade-in-arms Raoul Kerr raps his parts no less impressively with full force in the face.

BLOODYWOOD has a wide range: from harmonic feeling and epic moments to unrestrained rage and unbridled power, everything is there. There are many real burners on the album that are simply brilliant. All in all BLOODYWOOD torch a mad show with their album „Rakshar“. One is possessed by the explosive powerful energy and carried away.

MÅNEGARM

MÅNEGARM (Facebook) were the only ones who convinced me this year with their album „Ynglingaättens Öde“ in the category of Viking Metal. Their sound is characterized by the combination with folkloric elements. Versatility is trump on this album, which can shine with very different facets. (Review)

It is already unusual to introduce the album with the epic ten-minute track „Freyrs Blod“. But the song convinces all along the line and offers an epic experience. For the song „Stridsgalten“ various well-known guest musicians have joined the guild and made their contribution. Jonne Järvelä (Korpiklaani), Robse Dahn (Equilibrium) and Pär Hulkoff (Raubtier/Hulkoff) stand side by side with the MÅNEGARM men and belt out a hell of a song. A song that already shakes the earth with its powerful stomping beginning and makes the Viking hearts beat faster. Suddenly the attack follows and the warriors race forward. The song flies away under galloping drums. The song plays with quite different moods, but never loses the heroic epic feeling.

To illustrate the versatility of the album, I would like to mention the song „En snara av guld“ as a contrast. This one conjures up a special atmosphere with a wonderful melancholic mood. Especially for this emotional song Erik Grawsiö’s daughter Lea Grawsiö Lindström has added the soft soulful vocals. Listen for yourself. A fascinating song with an impressive video.

Heavy Metal

Just a little patience and you will find out what my album of the year is. But first some highlights from the category Heavy Metal.

Nicklas Sonne

The beginning is made by Nicklas Sonne (Facebook) with his solo debut album „Resonance“, which lives the rocking Heavy Metal. It has become an album that you can listen to from front to back in continuous loop. There is no reason not to love the album „Resonance“ by Nicklas Sonne. You can expect fantastic songs that sound modern and fresh. The songs all blossom with a bright intoxicating power that flows through the listener and fills the heart with joy and strength. Quite a great remarkable achievement and all the more admirable because it is a solo album.

As a song example I lead „Spit Out Your Pride“. It runs straight forward and shines with an epic chorus, whereby the extensive solo is once again rocked first class.

The video on the subject of arrogance, lack of empathy and tolerance towards others is excellently implemented and Nicklas is also not too shy for a little self-irony and represents as the main actor in his video exactly the above-mentioned character ugliness.

MACHINE HEAD

There is a rough break in style and we now find ourselves in hardcore heavy metal, which is interpreted in a gritty and hard way. It has never been the thing of mastermind Robb Flynn to stand on the spot. He always loved to experiment with the sound. So it is not surprising that on the new album „ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN“ again different styles flow in. But this time this mixture is really very successful.

The opener „Slaughter The Martyr“ starts with an atmospheric melancholic introduction. It initially has a ballad-like character, before the song of course still switches to attack mode and later still takes on anthemic traits with epic character. With „Choke On The Ashes Of Your Hate“ follows a straight thrash banger. Here your necks are beaten soft. In addition, there are hammer-hard nasty tempo changes and breakdowns. The guitar solo is crazy and insane and the song is brimming with rage and madness. A song like a storm and rumbling thunder that leaves no stone unturned.

MACHINE HEAD deliver a fascinating story with „“ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN“. The musically diverse chapters embody the narrative skillfully and have been created with much care to represent the respective characters as well as their actions and feelings. It has become a really good album with many great moments that impressively shows that Robb Flynn is still a force to be reckoned with.There is still enough creative power in him! (Review)

UNDERTOW

UNDERTOW (Facebook)have released their ninth album „Bipolar“ via El Puerto Records. The sound ranges from lurid destroyers to slow melancholic songs. However, you have never heard them as extreme and mature as on the current album. The unorthodox beginning is made by the very melancholic song „When Tears Became Scars“. Where otherwise a song should shake up the listener, first of all melancholy spreads.

As leisurely and melancholic the first song comes across, the more the second song „On Fire“ goes off. With real smack you change into a furious furious attack. The pace becomes stormy and whips brutally thrashy forward. Nasty sawing riffs cut a swath through the brain. Singer Joschi roars the lyrics with full force. I find the interspersed siren-like leads cool, which again offer tremendous fuel. Very cool is also the groovy stomping rhythm change, before the great guitar solo is fired and a longer melodic instrumental part follows.

In accordance with the album title „Bipolar“, extremely contrasting moods are played with. It is an up and down of the emotional world, an emotional roller coaster. UNDERTOW have created an intense album with „Bipolar“. They have forged multi-layered songs that sound more mature than ever before in all areas. The songwriting has become more complex, so that both the instrumental fraction and the vocals have more sophistication and expressiveness to offer. A hammer album! Brave and strong!

DIABLO

DIABLO (Facebook)released their album „When All The Rives Are Silent“ in February and I fell in love with it on the spot. And despite very strong competition, the album is still as impressive as the first time I heard it. I had already predicted back then that this album would be hard to beat. And I should be right.

Everything is just right here!

The powerful charismatic voice of singer Rainer Nygård sounds better than ever. The gloomy punchy passages compete with melodic interludes, while the overall dynamic unfolding is not lost sight of. Guitars are played phenomenally, whether it concerns the captivating riffs, the great leads or the imposing guitar solos. Heikki Malmberg on drums makes mighty steam here and provides together with bassist Aadolf Virtanen for an excellent flow.

Listen to „The Stranger“ for example. It starts fiercely with strong riffs and a gritty bass, then moves into a cautious interlude, only to reveal a mega chorus that is grippingly delivered in epic despair with immense power. Pure emotion that floods my soul. Beautiful and very poignant in its own intense way! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this song because it just touches me so much.

DIABLO honor us with their monster album „When All The Rivers Are Silent“! This is the most mature work of their career. The album hits the bull’s eye! There is nothing to criticize about this album. There is no song that is mediocre. Here a special moment is conjured up after the other. Turn on any song and it will grab you!

The sound offers a perfect entertaining mixture of creative drastic hardness and epic emotional moments. Singer Rainer Nygård gives himself versatile. The instrumental skills of the band are undeniably a masterpiece and the compositions are simply wonderfully conceived. I was completely convinced by the album in all respects. Praise and recognition for this masterpiece!

METALHEADs Toplist begibt sich in die finsteren Welten des Black Metal. Es ist zu einem faszinierenden Genre geworden, dass mit sehr facettenreicher Musik glänzen kann. Mittlerweile bedienen sich manche Bands ganz besonderer musikalischer Zutaten, so dass man eher progressiver Musik sprechen kann. So hätte ich sicherlich die ersten beiden Bands auch in die Sparte Progressive Metal packen können. Also seid gespannt…

AN ABSTRACT ILLUSION

Vermutlich würde ich die Band das nächste Mal in die Welt des Progressive Metal setzen. Denn die schwedische Band spielt auf ihrem Album „Woe“ eine Mischung aus Black & Death Metal mit höchst atmosphärischen Verwebungen und passt eigentlich in keine Schublade und es dürfte auch Leute gefallen, die sonst keinen Black Metal hören.

Der technische Anspruch ist immens hoch. Die Leistung von Gitarrist/Bassist Karl Westerlund ist einfach phänomenal und Robert Stenvall gelingt fantastische Soundwelten mit dem Keybord einfließen zu lassen. Wer sich einen Gefallen tun möchte, der sollte das Album von vorne bis hinten einfach ohne Unterbrechung durchhören, um die Atmosphäre in seine Gänze aufzusaugen. Es ist tatsächlich schwer das ganze musikalische Geschehen in Wort zu fassen, denn man würde wegen der Vielzahl an Eindrücken kein Ende finden. Es gibt zwar auch die brutalen Ausbrüche, aber sie sind eben nur ein Teil des gewaltigen Konstrukts.

Eine kleine Kostprobe bietet hier der Song „Slaves“ mit über sieben Minuten Spielzeit, der aber nur erahnen lässt, was sonst noch für epische Monster hier auf den Hörer warten, wobei ich z.B. auf das 14-minütige „In The Heavens Above, You Will Become A Monster“ verweisen möchte.

WHITE WARD

aus der Ukraine verweben musikalische Stoffe, die man so ganz und gar nicht zusammen vereint sehen würde. Ich hätte niemals gedacht, dass man Black Metal mit Jazz verbinden könnte. Aber ich musste mich von WHITE WARD (Facebook) eines besseren belehren lassen, als ich das Album „False Light“ hörte.

Bereits in den ersten Augenblicken des 13-minütigen Openers „Leviathan“ vernahm ich die Klänge eines Saxophons. Wow! Dann gibt es erst einmal feinstem melodischen Black Metal. Plötzlich wird es ganz ruhig und in dieser sphärischen Phase ertönt eine Trompete, die sich hier perfekt einfügt. Aber dies sind nicht die einzigen klassischen Instrumente, die hier ihren Auftritt haben. Ich habe so etwas noch nie gehört und bin fasziniert von dieser Art der musikalischen Darbietung. Einfach traumhaft!

KVAEN

KVAEN (Facebook) ist ein Soloprojekt des Musikers Jacob Björnfot. Und auch er ist wieder ein Beweis dafür, dass Soloprojekte durchaus phänomenal sein können. Der Sound von KVAEN lässt sich nicht so einfach beschreiben. Grundsätzlich geht der Sound erbarmungslos zur Sache. Cleane Vocals sind Fehlanzeige. So finden wir uns auf dem Album „The Great Below“ in turbulenten Gewässern und Stromschnellen des Black Metal, Speed Metal und Pagan Metal wieder.

Der Sound klingt brachial und fegt wie eine wildgewordene Bestie über alles und jeden hinweg. Bemerkenswert, dass bei dieser Eskalation die melodische Komponenente tatsächlich nicht vergessen wird. KVAEN gelingt es durch sein musikalisches Fingerspitzengefühl dieser finsteren Erbarmungslosigkeit eine faszinierendes Charisma zu verpassen. Dafür sorgen auch diverse hochkarätige Gastmusiker wie z.B. Jeff Loomis, der beim zweiten Song „The Great Below“ seine Gitarrenmuskeln beim Solo spielen lässt. (Review)

WALG

WALG (Facebook) sind Newcomer aus den Niederlanden und liefern eine fantastische Interpretation von Black Metal mit folkloristischen mystischen Einflüssen. Sie verleihen ihrer Musik ganz verschiedene Einflüsse und erschaffen daraus ihre ganz eigene magische Black-Metal-Welt, die Euch mit einem atmosphärischen Strudel in die Tiefe zieht.

Hier sei als Beispiel der Song „Verlossing“ genannt, der zu Beginn mit ungewöhnlichen folkloristische Klängen seine Aufwartung macht. Diese speziellen Kläne stammen von einem traditionellen Instrument „Launeddas“ aus Sardinien und verpassen dem Song einen mystischen Charakter. Dies ist aber nur eine der Verrücktheiten, die sich WALG einfallen lassen. Ansonsten hat der Song im Vergleich zu den anderen Songs epischen Balladencharakter, wenn man im Bereich Black Metal überhaupt von Balladen reden kann.

Allerdings lasst Euch von diesem Ausnahmesong nicht täuschen. Das Album ist insgesamt ein wilder erbarumungsloser Ritt, der Euch durch Gefilde purer Zerstörung führt. Die Vocals gefallen gefallen mir auf dem Album insgesamt sehr gut und bieten Abwechslung. Auf der einen Seite die bösen Growls/Screams in diversen Variationen, die einen gehörigen Touch wilden Wahnsinn verbreiten. Dazu erfolgt im Kontrast das teilweise Einbinden von cleanem Gesang in den Chören, was den epischen Faktor weiter hochschraubt. So bleibt mir nicht mehr zu sagen, als dass WALG für mich mit diesem energiegeladenen Wahnsinnsaufritt so weggeblasen haben, dass es für mich das Black-Metal-Album des Jahres geworden ist. (Review)

AN ABSTRACT ILLUSION

Probably the next time I would put the band in the world of progressive metal. Because the Swedish band plays on their album „Woe“ a mixture of Black & Death Metal with highly atmospheric interweavings and actually fits into no pigeonhole.

The technical standard is immensely high. The performance of guitarist / bassist Karl Westerlund is simply phenomenal and Robert Stenvall manages to let fantastic sound worlds flow in with his keyboard. If you want to do yourself a favor, just listen through the album from front to back without interruption to soak up the atmosphere in its entirety. It is actually difficult to put the whole musical event into a few words, because one would not find an end because of the multitude of impressions. There are also the brutal outbursts, but they are just a part of the huge construct.

A small sample offers here the song „Slaves“ with over seven minutes playing time, but this only gives an idea of what other epic monsters are waiting here for the listener, where I would like to refer, for example, to the 14-minute „In The Heavens Above, You Will Become A Monster„.

WHITE WARD

from Ukraine weave together musical materials that one would not see united together at all. I would never have thought that you could combine black metal with jazz. But I had to be taught better by WHITE WARD (Facebook) when I heard the album „False Light“. I could hardly believe what I was hearing at first.

Already in the first moments of the 13-minute opener „Leviathan“ I heard the sounds of a saxophone. Wow! Then there is first of all finest melodic Black Metal. Suddenly it becomes very quiet and in this spherical phase a trumpet sounds, which fits in perfectly. But these are not the only classical instruments that make their appearance here. I have never heard anything like this before and am fascinated by this kind of musical performance. Simply outstanding!

KVAEN

KVAEN (Facebook) is a solo project by musician Jacob Björnfot. And it is again proof that solo projects can be quite phenomenal. The sound of KVAEN is not so easy to describe. Basically, the sound goes mercilessly to the point. Clean vocals are absent. So we find ourselves on the album „The Great Below“ in wild waters and rapids of Black Metal, Speed Metal and Pagan Metal.

The sound sounds brute and sweeps like a wild beast over everything and everyone. Remarkable that in this escalation the melodic component duck is actually not forgotten. KVAEN succeeds in giving this dark mercilessness a fascinating charisma through his musical intuition. This is also ensured by various top-class guest musicians such as Jeff Loomis, who lets his guitar artistry be heard during the solo on the second song „The Great Below“. (Review)

WALG

WALG (Facebook) are newcomers from the Netherlands and deliver a fantastic interpretation of Black Metal with folkloric mystical influences. They give their music very different influences and create their very own magical black metal world out of it, which pulls you in with an atmospheric vortex.

Here, as an example, the song „Verlossing“ is mentioned, which makes its appearance at the beginning with unusual folkloristic sounds. These come from a traditional instrument „Launeddas“ from Sardinia and give the song a mystical character. But this is only one of the weirdnesses that WALG come up with. Otherwise, the song has compared to the other songs epic ballad character, if you can talk about ballads at all in the field of black metal.

However, do not be deceived by this exceptional song. The album is altogether a wild merciless ride that takes you through realms of pure destruction. The vocals please me on the album overall very well and offer variety. On the one hand, the evil growls / screams in various variations, which spread a proper touch of wild madness. In contrast, the partial integration of clean vocals in the choruses, which further raises the epic factor. So there is nothing more to say than that WALG have blown away for me with this energetic madness performance so that it has become the Black Metal album of the year for me. (Review)

ARCH ENEMY

ARCH ENEMY (Homepage, Facebook) sind eine Macht im Melodic Death Metal. Seit 1996 gehen sie ihren Weg und der stetig wachsende Erfolg hat gezeigt, dass sie den richtigen Weg gegangen sind. Johan Liiva war der erste Sänger der Band, bis 2001 Angela Gossow übernahm und ebenfalls einen hervorragenden Job machte und so zu einem herausragenden Merkmal der Band wurde. Nach langer erfolgreicher Zeit zog sich Angela zurück und übergab der nicht minder charismatischen Alissa White-Gluz das Mikro „Deceivers“ ist nun das elfte Album der Band und heute am 12.08.’22 erschienen.

Der Opener „Handshake With Hell“ ist direkt eine Überraschung auf dem Album. Denn hier erklingen die nicht oft zu hörenden cleanen Vocals von Alissa. Und ich finde, dass das super zu dem Song passt und eine schöne Varianz in den Sound bringt. Es muss nicht immer davon Gebrauch gemacht werden, aber so hin und wieder würde ich das sehr begrüßen. Auch sonst ist der Song sehr melodisch geraten und rockt mal so locker fetzig im Heavy Metal Style voran. Sehr gelungen!

Das Album „Deceivers“ von ARCH ENEMY erstrahlt im frischen Glanz. Sie zeigen auf „Deceivers“ neue Ansätze und kommen wie gewohnt mit viel Energie und Stärke daher. ARCH ENEMY verbinden wie gewohnt brutale kompromisslosen Angriffe mit melodischen Substanzen, legen aber auf „Deceivers“ mehr Wert auf eine atmosphärische Balance und Tiefe. Dies gelingt ihnen häufig auf eine spektakuläre Art und Weise. Immer wieder auffallend bemerkenswert ist das Gitarrenspiel vom Gitarrenduo Jeff Loomis und Michael Amott. Deren Künste sorgen immer wieder für sensationelle Momente und für stürmische Begeisterung.

VITTRA

Das Debütalbum „Blasphemy Blues“ der schwedischen Band VITTRA (Facebook/Homepage) setzt da an, wo ihre Debüt-EP „Wardens“ aufgehört hat. Schon dort zeichnete sich eine gewisse erfrischende Verrücktheit im Sound ab. Auf dem neuen Album hat sich der Sound ein wenig verändert bzw. entwickelt. Obwohl die Songs auf „Wardens“ schon von erlesener Qualität waren, so hat man den neuen Songs mehr Geradlinigkeit und einen dynamischeren Flow verpasst. Soll heißen, dass der peitschende Thrash-Metal-Anteil zugenommen hat.

Der Sound ist strukturierter geworden und alles läuft harmonischer ineinander. Darüber hinaus zeigen sich tatsächlich rockige Vibes im Gitarrenspiel und auch die Soli sind hervorragend. Außerdem bieten die Songs eine schöne Varianz und haben ihre jeweiligen charakteristische Züge. Denn die thrashige Liebhaberei ist nur ein Teil des Ganzen. Man ist sich für keine Verrückheit zu schade. Dies manifestiert sich zum Beispiel im Song „Sommerfödd“. Ein absolut spezieller Song, den ich genial finde, weil er eben anders ist. Sogar eine zarte Frauenstimme findet darin ihren Platz. Muss man gehört haben!

„Blasphemy Blues“ strotz nur so vor lebendiger Energie, die den Hörer mitreißt. Die anregenden ideenreichen Songs wirken homogen ohne eintönig zu wirken und begeistern mit einer tollen Dynamik. Im grundsätzlich harten Sound entfaltet sich eine lockere beschwingte rockige Art, die mit einer dämonischen Verrücktheit einhergeht. So bewahren sich VITTRA ihre Originalität und sind eine der aufregendsten neuen Bands.

FEELINGLESS

ist eigentlich keine Band, sondern ein Projekt des Gitarristen Hugo Markaida der Melodic Death Metal Band RISE TO FALL. Zusammen mit hochkarätigen Musikern der Metal-Szene hat er dieses Jahr das Album „Metal Against Animal Cruelty“ erschaffen. Das Album dreht sich um das Thema Tierschutz, welches ein genauso wichtiges Thema wie viele andere ist. Die Welt hat viele eklatante Probleme, wovon die bedrohte und ausgebeutete Tierwelt eines ist.

Schon der Opener „Feelingless“ mit Gastsänger Björn Strid ist ein Offenbarung. Ein epischer Brüller, der direkt Eure ganze Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. Die Qualität der Songs ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben. So viel ist mal klar. Man nehme z.B. auch den Song „Nostalgia“, der Euch sowohl mit martialischen Angriffen überrennt, aber auch mit tollen Hooks verwöhnt. Ein Highligt des Songs zeigt sich aber auch in dem gigantischen Instrumentalpart, der erst mit einem formidablen Gitarrensolo eingeleitet wird, welches dann nahtlos in ein geiles Keybordsolo von Diego Zapatero übergeht. Ich liebe so etwas!

Es geht verdammt hart zur Sache! Die Songs scheinen sich manchesmal gegenseitig an Vehemenz übertreffen zu wollen. Wilde Beschleunigungsfahrten drücken Euch immer wieder in den Sitz und lassen die Backen flattern und den Nacken knacken. Aber es ist nur eine Facette des ganzen Albums. Das Songwriting offenbart eine gutes Gefühl dafür, wann man die Fahrt mal rausnimmt, um dem Sound eine schöne Varianz und atmosphärische Tiefe zu schenken.

FEELINGLESS haben mit „Metal Against Animal Cruelty“ ein gewaltiges Statement gesetzt, das mit sehr imponierenden gewaltigen Songs aufwartet.

WOLFHEART

Auf dem letzten Album „Wolves Of Karelia“ zeichnete sich bereits ab, dass WOLFHEART ihrer Musik einen größeren epischen Touch und dichtere Atmosphäre spendierten. Und damit rennen sie bei mir offene Türen ein. Das neue Album „King Of The North“ sollte dieses Jahr noch mal eine Steigerung werden.

WOLFHEART nutzen ihr gewaltiges Potential

und zeigen eindrucksvoll, dass man durchaus in der Lage ist opulente Songs zu komponieren. Herausgekommen sind epische Monstersongs, die es an nichts missen lassen, was gleich mit dem überlangen Opener „Skyforger“ in erstklassiger Manier offenbart wird. Beeindruckend ist nach wie vor die Vehemenz, mit der WOLFHEART hervorbrechen. Der zweite Song „Ancestor“ brettert in zerstörerischer Manier davon. Die Blastbeats pusten den Schmalz aus den Ohren. Und doch schaffen sie es durch geschickte Veränderungen im Tempo und atmosphärischen Erscheinungsbild des Songs nicht plump und stumpf werden zu lassen.

Auf „King Of The North“ werden den Melodien noch mehr Raum eingeräumt. Dies betrifft vor allem den Gesang, der nun in cleaner Form durch Vageliss Karzis und Lauri Silvonen Einzug gefunden haben. Mit diesem Rezept ist auch „Desolated Land“ ein ganz besonderes Schmankerl geworden und ist für mich DIE Hymne des Albums. Dabei haben mich diese kraftvollen cleanen Vocals sehr begeistert. Und auch wenn der Song relativ verhalten mit melancholischer Attitüde beginnt, entwickelt er sich mittendrin zu einem rasenden Sturm mit einem gigantischen elektrisierenden Gitarrensolo.

Musikalisches Festmahl

WOLFHEART lassen sich nicht beirren und halten an ihrem brachialen Monumental-Metal fest. Dabei setzen sie mit „King Of The North“ ihrem Sound die Krone auf und brillieren mit dem vielseitigsten und epischsten Werk ihrer Historie. Das Album ist beeindruckend ausgearbeitet und es lassen sich vielerlei Feinheiten in der ganzen Soundgewalt entdecken. Es ist ein Album voller nordischer Hymnen, die mit toller Atmosphäre ein heroisches Gefühl entfachen und die Seele mit Stärke erfüllt. Ein wahrlich göttliches musikalisches Festmahl! Somit hat das Bandfoto von oben schon durchaus seine Berechtigung. Denn WOLFHEART nehmen auf dem Thron platz.

ARCH ENEMY

ARCH ENEMY

are a force in Melodic Death Metal. They have been going their way since 1996 and the ever-growing success has shown that they have gone the right way. Johan Liiva was the first vocalist of ARCH ENEMY (Homepage, Facebook) until 2001 when Angela Gossow took over and also did a great job, becoming a prominent feature of the band. After a long successful time Angela retired and handed over the mic to the no less charismatic Alissa White-Gluz „Deceivers“ is now the eleventh album of the band and released today on 12.08.’22.

The opener „Handshake With Hell“ is directly a surprise on the album. Because here you can hear the not often heard clean vocals of Alissa. And I think that fits super to the song and brings a nice variance in the sound. It does not always have to be used, but so now and then I would welcome it very much. Also otherwise the song is very melodic and rocks times so loose groovy in heavy metal style ahead. Very impressive!

The album „Deceivers“ from ARCH ENEMY shines in fresh splendor. They show on „Deceivers“ new approaches and come as usual with a lot of energy and strength. ARCH ENEMY combine as usual brutal uncompromising attacks with melodic substances, but on „Deceivers“ they put more emphasis on an atmospheric balance and depth. They often succeed in this in a spectacular way. Always strikingly remarkable is the guitar playing of the guitar duo Jeff Loomis and Michael Amott. Their arts provide sensational moments and stormy enthusiasm again and again.

VITTRA

The debut album „Blasphemy Blues“ of the Swedish band VITTRA (Facebook/Homepage) starts where their debut EP „Wardens“ left off. Already there a certain refreshing craziness in the sound stood out. On the new album, the sound has changed or evolved a bit. Although the songs on „Wardens“ were already of exquisite quality, the new songs have been given more straightforwardness and a more dynamic flow. That is to say that the whipping thrash metal influence has increased.

The sound has become more structured and everything runs more harmoniously into each other. In addition, actually rocky vibes show up in the guitar playing and also the solos are excellent. Moreover, the songs offer a nice variance and have their respective characteristic traits. The loveliness for Thrash style is only a part of the whole. They are not too shy for any craziness. This manifests itself for example in the song „Sommerfödd“. An absolutely special song, which I find ingenious, because it is just different. Even a tender female voice finds its place in it. Great stuff!

„Blasphemy Blues“ is bursting with lively energy that carries the listener along. The stimulating songs full of ideas seem homogeneous without being monotonous and inspire with a great dynamic. In the basically hard sound unfolds a loose buoyant rocky style, which is accompanied by a demonic craziness. Thus VITTRA keep their originality and are one of the most exciting new bands.

FEELINGLESS

is actually not a band, but a project of guitarist Hugo Markaida of the Melodic Death Metal band RISE TO FALL. Together with top-class musicians of the metal scene he created the album „Metal Against Animal Cruelty“ this year. The album is about animal welfare, which is as important a topic as many others. The world has many glaring problems, of which the threatened and exploited animal world is one.

Already the opener „Feelingless“ with guest singer Björn Strid is a revelation. An epic roar that directly draws all your attention. The quality of the songs is beyond any doubt. That much is clear. Take for example the song „Nostalgia“, which overruns you with martial attacks, but also spoils you with great hooks. A highligt of the song shows up however also in the gigantic instrumental part, which is introduced first with a formidable guitar solo, which changes then smoothly into a cool Keybordsolo of Diego Zapatero. I love something like that!

It goes damn hard to the point! The songs sometimes seem to want to surpass each other in vehemence. Wild acceleration rides push you into the seat again and again and let the cheeks flutter and the neck crack. But it’s only one facet of the whole album. The songwriting reveals a good sense of when to take the drive out for a moment to give the sound a nice variance and atmospheric depth.

FEELINGLESS have made a huge statement with „Metal Against Animal Cruelty“, which comes up with very impressive songs.

WOLFHEART

With the last album „Wolves Of Karelia“ it was already apparent that WOLFHEART gave their music more and more an epic touch and denser atmosphere. And with this, they run open doors with me. The new album „King Of The North“ should be a further step this year.

WOLFHEART use their enormous potential

and show impressively that they are quite capable of composing opulent songs. The result are epic monster songs that lack nothing, which is immediately revealed with the overlong opener „Skyforger“ in first-class manner. It’s impressive how WOLFHEART burst forth with their vehemence.

„Ancestor“ breaks away in a destructive manner. The blast beats blow the lard out of the ears. And yet, through clever changes in tempo and atmospheric appearance of the song, they manage not to let it become clumsy and dull.

On „King Of The North“ the melodies are given even more space. This concerns especially the clean vocals, which are performed by Vageliss Karzis and Lauri Silvonen. With this recipe also „Desolated Land“ has become a very special treat and is for me THE anthem of the album. Thereby these powerful clean vocals excited me very much. And even if the song starts relatively restrained with melancholic attitude, it develops in the middle of a raging storm with a gigantic electrifying guitar solo.

Musical feast

WOLFHEART do not let themselves be distracted and stick to their brute monumental metal. With „King Of The North“ they put the crown on their sound and shine with the most versatile and epic work of their history. „King Of The North“ is impressively elaborated and many subtleties can be discovered in all the sound power. It is an album full of Nordic hymns that ignite a heroic feeling with great atmosphere and fill the soul with strength. A truly divine musical feast! Thus, the band photo from above already has its justification. Because WOLFHEART take a seat on the throne.

Jetzt geht es härtetechnisch langsam in Richtung Extreme Metal. Der Metalcore wird es uns heute hart besorgen. Und da gab es dieses Jahr ebenfalls verdammt starke Alben, die teilweise nicht unterschiedlicher sein könnten. Demzufolge war es verdammt schwer eine Entscheidung treffen. Viele Stunden mit heiserer Kehle und Nackenschmerzen später habe ich eine Entscheidung getroffen. Also Nacken geschmeidig machen und los geht’s:

INFECTED RAIN

Infected Rain (Facebook) haben mit viel Ehrgeiz eine steile Erfolgskurve zu verzeichnen. Die Band besticht durch eine ungeheure Energie, allen voran Lena Scissorhands als Sängerin. Sie ist mittlerweile eine bekannte Persönlichkeit in der Szene und sehr gefragt. Und am Anfang des Jahres kam das Album „Ecdysis“ auf den Markt.

„Postmortem Pt. 1“ war die erste Single und für mich nach wie vor der absolute Lieblingstrack auf der Scheibe. Ein unfassbar starker Song mit einer unglaublichen intensiven Ausstrahlung!

Der Sound von INFECTED RAIN infiziert! Wenn ich mir so einen Song wie „These Walls“ reinziehe, dann bekomme ich Gänsehaut. Diese explosive Mischung, welche teilweise in epische Gefilde abdriftet, hat einfach das gewisse Etwas. Zurückhaltung war noch nie so das große Ding von INFECTED RAIN. Da geht es meistens mit Vollgas durch die Wand. Der Sound spielt mit elektronischen Elementen ohne diesen Sound damit zu überladen. Er wird eher nur zur atmosphärischen Gestaltung der kosmischen Soundwelten eingesetzt. Im Vordergrund steht zumeist die wilde Entladung der Protagonisten an den Instrumenten und am Mikro. Alles in allem bin ich sehr begeistert von dem Album. „Ecdysis“ war das erste fette Highlight des Jahres und nach wie vor eines der besten Alben in diesem Jahr. (Review)

GWENDYDD

GWENDYDD (Facebook) sind eine Band, die sogar fast kompleet aus toughen Mädels besteht. Und wer sich jetzt wegen mangelnder Härte Sorgen macht, der sollte langsam gemerkt haben, dass nicht nur die Männer im Metal gehörig auf den Putz hauen können. „Censored“ heißt das aktuelle Album und ist eine super Steigerung zum Vorgänger.

Victoria Stoichkova als Frontfrau ist eine sehr wandelbare Kraft. Sie verbreitet Angst und Schrecken, kann aber auch mit zuckersüßen Einlagen verblüffen, wovon man jedoch nicht so häufig Gebrauch macht. Der Beginn des Albums ist sehr weit weg vom Zuckerschlecken, denn hier steigt man direkt steinhart ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste in die Geschichte ein.

GWENDYDD entfesseln mit ihrem Album „Censored“ einen zerstörischen dunklen Wahnsinn. Es ist ein irres Album, dass die Band mit einem Mal auf ein ganz anderes Level katapultiert. Die Kunst des Albums liegt darin, sich nicht in purer eintöniger Wildheit zu verlieren, sondern dem Sound immer wieder eigenwillige Facetten zu verpassen. Die Scheibe hämmert von vorne bis hinten! Dabei überzeugt das ungewöhnliche und abwechslungreiche Songwriting mit abstrusen und aberwitzigen Ideen, die zu einem funktionierenden Ganzen vereint wurden. So ist ein Album mit eigener Note entstanden, was verdammt noch mal Spaß macht. (Review)

Als Beispiel für die eigene Note sie hier der verrückteste Song „We Are The New Order“ genannt. Warum? „We Are The New Order“ ist ein Brecher, der mit elektronischen Samples spielt und somit dem Song ne besonders irre Not verpasst. Diese eingespielte orientalische Folklore ist einfach geil und mal was anderes. Da kann man mal im Moshpit kurz nen Bauchtanz einschieben.

MALEVOLENCE

Zugegeben…. Es fiel mir sehr schwer eine Entscheidung für den Spitzenplatz zu treffen. Zumal die musikalische Interpretation der letzten beiden Topplatzierungen unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten. Das Album „Malicious Intent“ von MALEVOLENCE waren für mich lange Zeit der Anwärter auf den Spitzenplatz im Metalcore. Und es sei gesagt, dass diejenigen, welche es nicht ganz so abgefahren mögen, mehr mit diesem Album anfangen können. Soll aber nicht heißen, dass MALEVOLENCE Standard servieren würden. Dies ist ganz und gar nicht der Fall!

Das Intro „Malicious Intent“ fackelt natürlich nicht lange und die ruppige Stimme von Alex Taylor bricht hervor. Das massive Instrumentalgewitter lässt nicht lange auf sich warten und zeigt bereits eindrucksvoll, was man unter brachialen Breakdowns versteht, die wie heftige Schläge in die Magengrube reinhauen.

„Life Sentence“ geht den Weg weiter und entfesselt das nächste Core-Monster. Dabei prügelt das Monster nicht nur einfach stumpf drauflos. Es lässt eine ganze Armada verschiedenster Schlagkombination auf Euch niederprasseln. Krass fette Riffs, die von einer geilen spielfreudigen Leadgitarre beschossen werden. Für den Moshpit gibt es noch eine Speed-Einlage und das Ende ist ein durchschlagendes Breakdown-Erdbeben.

Wenn der grüne Hulk auf ein Konzert gehen würde, um mal richtig die Sau rauszulassen, dann wäre das wohl bei MALEVOLENCE. Es der schiere Wahnsinn, was die Band auf ihrem Album „Malicious Intent“ für eine Power entfesseln. Das ist unterhaltsamer Metal, der mit purer emotionaler Kraft dermaßen ballert, dass die Fetzen fliegen und ein Erdbeben die Erde erschüttert. Und das die Band dazu noch ne verdammt geile Ballade schmettern, zeigt nur umsomehr die Vielseitigkeit dieser Männer, die wunderbar zusammen harmonieren. Endgeiles Album und absolute Premier League! THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER

aus Australien sind eine ganz besondere Band, denn sie spielen Progressive Metalcore. Ich wusste gar nicht, dass es so was gibt, aber dann kam das Album „Trinity“ und ich wurde eines besseren belehrt. Die Band bewegt sich bei ihrer Interpretation des Metalcore in einem eigenen konzeptionellen Rahmen, indem sie Geschichten aus ihrem eigenen Universum musikalisch umsetzen. Es ist quasi ein vertonter Roman. Es geht dabei um Dämonen und Menschen in einer fiktiven Welt, ein ewiger erbitteter Kampf. Also nix für schwache Nerven…eine sehr intensive Erfahrung in jeder Hinsicht. Es ist ein durch und durch ausgeklügeltes Konzept aus Musik und künstlerischer Darstellung, wie man es selten findet.

Die Schönheit in der Zerstörung findet man hier. „Klotzen! Nicht kleckern!“ THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER hauen mächtig auf die Kacke. Der Hörer muss sich auf „viel“ Sound gefasst machen. Die Strukturen sind vollgestopft mit verschiedenen Eindrücken. Sehr intensiv! Man könnte es sogar schon als progressiv bezeichnen. Denn es ist bewundernswert, wie die Band inmitten der ganzen brachialen Songs ihre Melodien einbaut und mit fantastischen cleanen Gesangslinien verzaubert. Hierbei sei als Ausnahmesong „Red Clouds“ als erholsame musikalische Oase genannt, der als einziger allein mit cleanen Vocals auskommt.

Was für ein Trip!!! THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER dürften sich mit dem Album „Trinity“ aus dem Underground schießen, und zwar mit aller Wucht in die Topliga des Metalcore. Ein sehr intensives und überwältigendes Erlebnis, dass zwischen mitreißender Dynamik und dämonischem Chaos wandelt. (Review)

Und da dieses Album anders ist als andere und überwätigend in Szene gesetzt wurde, ist „Trinity“ mein Album des Jahres in der Kategorie Metalcore. Der absolute vertonte Wahnsinn!

Now it’s time for the harder stuff and we get more and more into the direction of extreme metal. Metalcore will give us the hard way today. And there were also damn strong albums this year, which could not be more different. Therefore it was damn hard to make a decision. Many hours with hoarse throat and neck pain later I made a decision. So get your neck supple and let’s go:

INFECTED RAIN

INFECTED RAIN (Facebook) have a lot success with a lot of ambition. But you have to remember that they have already been around for 13 years. The band captivates with a tremendous energy, especially Lena Scissorhands (Facebook) as the singer. She is now a well-known personality in the scene and very much in demand. And at the beginning of the year the album „Ecdysis“ was released.

„Postmortem Pt. 1“ was the first single and for me still the absolute favorite track on the album. An incredibly strong song with an unbelievable intense charisma!

The sound of INFECTED RAIN infects! When I listen to a song like „These Walls“, I get goosebumps. This explosive mixture, which sometimes drifts into epic realms, just has that certain something. Restraint has never been the big thing of INFECTED RAIN. There it goes mostly with full throttle. The sound plays with electronic elements without overloading this sound with it. It is rather used only for the atmospheric design of the cosmic sound worlds. In the foreground is mostly the wild discharge of the protagonists on the instruments and on the vocals. All in all, I am very enthusiastic about the album. „Ecdysis“ was the first fat highlight of the year and still one of the best albums this year.

GWENDYDD

WENDYDD (Facebook) are a band that consists almost entirely of tough girls. And who is now worried about the lack of toughness, should have slowly noticed that not only the men in Metal can do it in a brutal way. „Censored“ is the name of the current album and is a super increase to the predecessor.

Victoria Stoichkova as the front woman is a very changeable force. She spreads fear and terror, but can also amaze with sugar-sweet interludes, but which is not used so often. The beginning of the album is very far from sugarcoating, because here you get right away the hard attack.

GWENDYDD unleash a destructive dark madness with their album „Censored“. It is an insane album that catapults the band to a whole other level all at once. Musically it’s not getting lost in pure monotonous savagery, but always adding idiosyncratic facets to the sound. The album hits from front to back! The unusual and varied songwriting convinces with abstruse and crazy ideas, which were united to a functioning whole. Thus, an album with its own note has been created, which is damn fun. (Review)

As an example for this own note is the craziest song „We Are The New Order“. This track is a breaker, which plays with electronic samples and thus gives the song ne particularly crazy need. This recorded oriental folklore is just cool and something different. There you can briefly insert a belly dance in the mosh pit.

MALEVOLENCE

Admitted…. It was very difficult for me to make a decision for the top spot. Especially since the musical interpretation of the last two top rankings could not be more different. The album „Malicious Intent“ by MALEVOLENCE (Facebook) were for me for a long time the contender for the top place in Metalcore. And it should be said that those who don’t like it so unusual would prefer this album. But this is not to say that MALEVOLENCE would serve standard. Not at all!

The intro „Malicious Intent“ of course doesn’t take long and the gruff voice of Alex Taylor breaks out. The massive instrumental storm is not long in coming and already shows impressively what is meant by brute breakdowns that punch like heavy blows in your stomach.

„Life Sentence“ continues the way and unleashes the next core monster. The monster doesn’t just bluntly beat the hell out of you. It lets a whole armada of different punch combinations rain down on you. Crass fat riffs, which are bombarded by a horny playful lead guitar. For the mosh pit there is still a speed interlude and the end is a resounding breakdown earthquake.

If the green Hulk would go to a concert, then it would probably be at MALEVOLENCE. It’s sheer madness what power the band unleash on their album „Malicious Intent“. This is entertaining metal, which is so powerful with pure emotional force that the shreds fly and an earthquakes shake the earth. And that the band also belt out a damn cool ballad, shows only the versatility of these men, who harmonize wonderfully together. Stunning album and absolute Premier League! (Review)

THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER

from Australia are a very special band, because they play progressive Metalcore. I didn’t even know that there was such a thing, but then came the album „Trinity“ and I was taught better. The band’s interpretation of metalcore moves within its own conceptual framework, musically translating stories from its own universe. It’s a novel set to music, so to speak. It is about demons and humans in a fictional world, an eternal requested fight. So not for the faint of heart…a very intense experience in every way. It is a thoroughly ingenious concept of music and artistic performance, as you rarely find.

Beauty in destruction can be found here. THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER hit the shit hard. The listener must be prepared for „a lot“ of sound. These structures are crammed with different impressions. Very intense! Because it is admirable how the band incorporates its melodies in the midst of all the brute songs and enchants with fantastic clean vocal lines. Here, the exceptional song „Red Clouds“ should be mentioned as a restful musical oasis, which is the only one with clean vocals alone.t

What a trip!!! THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER should shoot themselves out of the underground with the album „Trinity“, and with all the force into the top league of Metalcore. A very intense and overwhelming experience that walks between rousing dynamics and demonic chaos.(Review)

And because this album is different from others and is overwhelmingly staged, „Trinity“ is my album of the year in the category Metalcore. The absolute music madness!

HIGH COMMAND

haben ihr Album „Eclipse Of The Dual Moon“ relativ spät am 25.11.2022 rausgebracht. Leider habe ich es zeitlich nicht mehr geschafft ein Review zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung darüber zu schreiben. Aber da ich es für ein hervorragendes Album halte, möchte ich es unbedingt in meiner Toplist 2022 erwähnen. Die Band aus Massachusetts haut zum Ende des Jahres noch mal ein echtes Highlight raus. Die Band prügelt old school Thrash auf einem hohen Level. Von Midtempo bis Vollgas wird Euch alles geboten, um den Nacken heftig durchzuschütteln.

Man bekommt sogar beim Song „Chamber Of Agony“ eine kleine Ruhepause gegönnt, denn der Song wird mit melancholischen Klängern einer Akustikgetarre und einer Violine eingeleitet, bevor er Euch die Scheisse aus dem Leib prügelt. Außerdem gibt es zwei Songs mit einer epischen Länge von über sieben oder sogar fast zwölf Minuten Länge, was für dieses Genre sehr ungewöhnlich ist. Und auch dieses Konzept funktioniert dank cleverem Songwriting super. Langeweile kommt jedenfalls nicht auf. Ich könnte mir diese Band zusammen mit MISFIRE (siehe unten) sehr gut zusammen auf einem Konzert vorstellen. Das wäre der absolute Killer! Also checkt das Album auf jeden Fall hier aus!

TRAUMA

sind Mitbegründer des Thrash Metal und zu Beginn im Jahre 1980 war sogar Bassist Cliff Burton mit von der Partie, der aber später zu den legendären METALLICA wechselte und dann leider früh mit 24 Jahren bei einem Unfall ums Leben kam.

Es wird schnell klar, dass TRAUMA (Facebook) nicht nur stringent Thrash Metal kloppen. So gelingt es ihnen inmitten der unheimlich fetzigen und mitreißenden Dynamik immer wieder frische Akzente zu setzen ohne den mitreißenden und explosiven Flow zu unterbrechen. Nehmen wir den Song „Death Of The Angel“ mit seinen energiegeladenen Screams und dem fantastischen Refrain, der von einer fabelhaften Gitarrenarbeit begleitet wird. Genial!

TRAUMA lassen es mit „Awakening“ gehörig krachen. Wer damit aufwacht, braucht keinen Kaffee mehr, denn die Energie lässt dich sofort hochspringen und vor Freude schreien. Dieses Album ist ein absolutes Pflichtprogramm für jeden Thrash/Heavy Metal Fan, der sich gerne von einem musikalischen Blitzgewitter elektrisieren lassen will. Ich jedenfalls bin völlig TRAUMAtisiert und ich liebe es. (Review)

KREATOR

sind eine Legende und können auf eine lange erfolgreiche Karriere zurückblicken. Sie genießen weltweit einen hervorragenden Ruf. Und das völlig zu Recht. Mit ihrem neuen Album „Hate Über Alles“ bieten sie modernen Thrash der Extraklasse und scheuen sich auch nicht ihren Sound mit tollen Ideen aufzufrischen ohne sich in wahnwitzige Experimente zu verlieren. Als Anspieltip sei hier „Midnight Sun“ genannt, womit man gleich den ungewöhnlichsten Song zur hören bekommt.

KREATOR (Facebook) bestätigen weiterhin ihre Größe im Metal. Sie sind noch lange nicht abgekühlt und schmieden immer noch heiße Eisen im Feuer. Und sie schaffen es knackig scharfe Songs entstehen lassen. Zudem vollzieht man das Kunststück moderne atmosphärische Elemente einzubauen ohne an Authentizität zu verlieren. (Review)

Ich liebe den modernen Ansatz, der musikalische Schubladen sprengt, aber genauso liebe ich auch Bands, die den „alten“ Sound vortrefflich und unterhaltsam präsentieren. Deshalb hat es dieses Jahr ein Thrash-Metal-Album auf den Spitzenplatz meiner Liste geschafft, das eher den alten Sound zelebriert.

MISFIRE

Als ich die ersten Töne hörte, war ich umgehend verliebt. Diese Monsterriffs sägen durch Euer Gehör wie die Kettensäge beim Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Hart! Scharf! Gnadenlos! Der Beginn stampft noch zurückhaltend, aber unheilvoll, voran, um nur wenig später ein wahres Feuerwerk abzufackeln. Auf allen Positionen gibt es nur ein Motto. Es muss krachen! Der Drummer James Nicademus prügelt wie ein Berserker auf seine Felle ein. MISFIRE besinnen sich auf einen rudimentären Sound. Hier gibt es nur das Nötigste, ganz ohne Schnickschnack.

Das Album ist klanglich eine knallharte Version dessen, was ihr live hören werdet. Es ist echt, kein falscher Scheiß! Es ist eine Rückbesinnung auf die Art und Weise, wie die Dinge früher aufgenommen wurden. Man schaltet die Kiste ein, drückt auf Aufnahme, legt ein paar Sachen drüber, mischt es ab und fertig.

Hier gibt es also handegemachte Mucke in die Fresse. Der Sound scheppert so was von fett und druckvoll aus den Boxen, dass sich meine Eier gar nicht entscheiden können, ob sie vor Freude auf und ab hüpfen oder sich vor Schreck in der Bauchhöhle verstecken sollen. Aber scheissegal, wo sie sich auch befinden mögen… Ich flippe total aus und zerlege meinen Nacken bei diesem Thrash-Donnerwetter.

MISFIRE sind ne Hammertruppe! Sie haben mit ihrem Album „Sympathy For The Ignorant“ einen Volltreffer gelandet. So muss klassischer Thrash Metal in modernen Zeiten klingen und nicht anders! Das Album ist ein Pflichtprogramm für jeden Thrash-Metal-Fan. Es gibt an diesem Album nicht das geringste zu kritisieren. Es ist was es ist! Ein ehrliches leidenschaftliches musikalisches Statement! Roh und blutig!

Metalheads Toplist 2022 goes into the next round! Even if many probably have completely different bands on the screen, there are exactly the following four bands that have made it into my top list.

HIGH COMMAND

have released their album „Eclipse Of The Dual Moon“ late this year on 11/25/2022. It’s an excellent album, therefore I definitely want to mention it in my Toplist 2022. The band from Massachusetts is releasing a real highlight at the end of the year. The band beats old school Thrash on a high level. From midtempo to full throttle, everything is offered to destroy your neck.

You even get a little rest during the song „Chamber Of Agony“, because the song is introduced with melancholic sounds of an acoustic guitar and a violin, before it beats the shit out of you. There are also two songs with an epic length of over seven or even almost twelve minutes, which is very unusual for this genre. And also this concept works great thanks to clever songwriting. Boredom does not arise in any case. I could imagine this band together with MISFIRE (see below) very well together on a concert. That would be the absolute killer! So definitely check out the album here!

TRAUMA

are co-founders of thrash metal and in the beginning in 1980 even bassist Cliff Burton was part of the band, but later he changed to the legendary METALLICA and then unfortunately died early at the age of 24 in an accident.

It quickly becomes clear that TRAUMA (Facebook) don’t just stringently pound thrash metal. They manage to set fresh accents again and again in the midst of the incredibly groovy and rousing dynamics without interrupting the rousing and explosive flow. Take the song „Death Of The Angel“ with its energetic screams and fantastic chorus, all joined by fabulous guitar work. Ingenious!

TRAUMA let it rip with „Awakening“. If you wake up with it, you don’t need coffee anymore, because the energy makes you jump up immediately and scream with joy. This album is an absolute must-have for every Thrash/Heavy Metal fan who likes to be electrified by a musical lightning storm. I, for one, am completely TRAUMAtized and I love it. (Review)

KREATOR

are a legend and can look back on a long successful career. They enjoy an excellent reputation worldwide. And completely rightly so. With their new album „Hate Über Alles“ they offer modern Thrash in a class of its own and are not afraid to freshen up their sound with great ideas without losing themselves in mad experiments. As a play tip here is called „Midnight Sun“, with which you get to hear the most unusual song.

KREATOR (Facebook) continue to confirm their greatness in metal. They are far from cooled down and still forge hot irons in the fire. And they manage to create crisp, sharp songs. In addition, they perform the feat of incorporating modern atmospheric elements without losing authenticity. (Review)

I love the modern approach that breaks musical pigeonholes, but I also love bands that present the „old“ sound in an excellent and entertaining way. That’s why this year a Thrash Metal album made it to the top of my list that celebrates more of the old sound.

MISFIRE

When I heard the first notes, I was immediately in love. These monster riffs saw through your hearing like the chainsaw in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Hard! Sharp! Merciless! The beginning stomps still restrained, but ominously, ahead, to torch a true firework only a little later. On all positions there is only one motto. It must crack! Drummer James Nicademus beats his skins like a berserker. MISFIRE are thinking back to a rudimentary sound. Here there is only the most necessary, without any frills.

The album is sonically a badass version of what you’ll hear live. It’s real, no fake shit! It’s a throwback to the way things used to be recorded. You turn the box on, hit record, put some stuff over it, mix it down and you’re done.

So here you get handmade music fired straight into your face. The sound rattles so wild and powerful from the speakers that my balls can not decide whether they should jump up and down with joy or hide in the abdominal cavity with fright. But fuck it, wherever they may be… I totally freak out and shred my neck at this Thrash thunderstorm.

MISFIRE are a great band! They have hit the bull’s eye with their album „Sympathy For The Ignorant“. This is how classic Thrash Metal must sound in modern times and nothing else! The album is a must-have for every thrash metal fan. There is not the slightest thing to criticize about this album. It is what it is! An honest passionate musical statement! Raw and bloody! (Review)

Progressive Metal

Ein sehr weitläufiges Feld stellt der Progressive Metal dar. Denn was diese Kategorie auszeichnet, ist die Tatsache, dass diese Bands bei ihrer Musik bewusst über Grenzen gehen und verschiedene Dinge in ihrer Musik vereinen und meist von einem hohen technischen Anspruch geprägt sind. Mein Kollege Doc Rock ist in diesem Genre mehr zu Hause als ich es bin, aber dennoch finden sich immer wieder Alben, die mich ebenfalls sehr begeistern. Und somit finden sich in METALHEADs Toplist 2022 folgende Bands:

ODDLAND

spielt progressiven Metal mit einer gesunden Härte und ohne sich allzu sehr in extreme Spielereien zu verrennen, obwohl ihre Kompositionen als kunstfertig zu bezeichnen sind. Ein Markenzeichen von ODDLAND (Facebook) sind die extravaganten melodischen Klangwelten, die hier neben dem Piano unter anderem mit einem Sopran-Saxophon erzeugt werden. Dieses wird von vom Gitarristen Jussi Poikonen selber gespielt. Von den Fähigkeiten der Band durfte ich mich auch schon live überzeugen.

„Vermilion Oceans“ ist ein kleines Kunstwerk geworden und offenbart die genialen Fähigkeiten der Band, die sich abseits von standardisierten Wegen bewegen. Die Band vermag es verschiedene Stimmungen zu erzeugen, die von mystischen über dystopischen bis hin zu harmonischen und sogar epischen Klangwelten geprägt sind. Dementsprechend facettenreich tritt auch Sänger Saki auf. Mit viel Gefühl oder aber auch Härte passt er sich den Stimmungen an. Viel Gefallen habe ich auch an dem fett schwingenden Bass gefunden, getreu dem Motto: Der Bass ist krass!

ARDARITH

ist ein ambitioniertes Metalprojekt (Facebook), an dem sage und schreibe 5 Sängerinnen und Sänger zusammen mit 11 Musikern mitgewirkt haben und das Album „Home“ erschaffen haben, welches eine bewegende Geschichte zu erzählen hat. Das Konzept beruht dabei auf einen Hauptcharakter namens „Me“, der aufgrund von Krieg und Verderben seine Heimat verlassen muss, um ein neues Zuhause zu finden.

Ein intensives Wechselbad der musikalischen Eindrücke erwartet den aufgeschlossenen Hörer. Die Songstrukturen sind teils herausgefordernd, bringen jemanden aber auch dazu sich das Album wieder und wieder anzuhören. Denn jedesmal gibt es etwas neues zu entdecken und die Songs entfalten mehr und mehr ihre Wirkung. Man könnte das Album als buntes Kaleidoskop der Klänge mit immer anderen neuen Eindrücken beschreiben. Genauso könnte man die Musik mi einem guten Buch vergleichen, das mit tollen Spannungsbögen und wechselhaften Szenarien unterhält. Von der Vielfalt der musikalischen Ideen wäre ARDARITH auf Platz 1.

AMORPHIS

AMORPHIS (Facebook) haben mal als Death Metal Band begonnen, sich aber im Laufe der Zeit der Fesseln entledigt und ihrem Sound immer mehr Facetten verpasst. Und so kommt es, dass das neue Album „Halo“ hier in der Kategorie Progressive Metal gelandet ist. AMORPHIS haben sich schon länger zu einer progressiven Band entwickelt. Die Arrangements sind nicht immer vohersehbar, neigen zu Überraschungen und man scheut sich auch nicht exotische Sounds einzubauen.

So wird man beispielsweise mittig im Song „Northwards“ von einem chilligen Part überrascht, der mit einem schönen melodischen Gitarrensolo garniert und anschließend völlig cool von einer Hammondorgel abgelöst wird, die man vorher schon im Hintergrund vernehmen konnte. Es gibt ein traumhaftes Duett mit „My Name Is The Night“. Ein zärtlicher Song mit der Sängerin Petronella Nettermalm, die hier eine hinreißende Leistung mit ihrer wunderschönen Stimme abliefert und im Duett mit Tomi Joutsen einfach nur wundervoll erklingt. Alles in allem ein hervorragendes Album, dass wieder einmal bestätigt, warum die Band so weit oben steht. Ein Album von AMORPHIS ist immer ein Erlebnis. Und wenn es nur um den Hymnenfaktor ginge, wären AMORPHIS an erster Stelle. (Review)

Aber für mich hat es eine Band geschafft, die immer wieder für Überraschungen sorgt und das sind….

OSYRON

aus Kanada sind für mich eine der Bands, die unbedingt viel mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdienen. Es ist nicht nur der hohe spieltechnische Level, der mich begeistert. Es ist auch die scheinbar grenzenlose Kreativität, mit der OSYRON (Facebook) ihre Songs erschafft. Ihre bisherigen Werke zeigen, dass sie sich in vielen Bereichen wohlfühlen. Das neue Album „Momentous“ war für mich deshalb schon wieder eine Überraschung.

Denn nun verpassen sie ihrem Sound einen Anteil authentischer Folk Musik. Genau solche Klänge bestimmen den Beginn vom Opener „Anunnaki“, die von der Band PERCIVAL SCHUTTENBACH (Facebook) stammen. Dabei handelt es sich um die Musiker Mikołaj Rybacki und Katarzyna Bromirska. Diese sind hin und wieder auf dem Album zu hören und das hört sich tatsächlich ziemlich cool an. Sie schenken der Musik eine ganz spezielle Atmosphäre. Und das neue Album ist härter und düsterer geworden als das, was man bisher gehört hat. Ein ganz neues Level, auch was die technischen Fähigkeiten angeht.

Die Range von Sänger Reed Alton ist außergewöhnlich und bemerkenswert. Diese zarte klare Stimme im Vergleich zu den kraftvoll gesungenen Parts bis hin zur totalen bösen Eskalation sind sehr eindrucksvoll. Neben dem fabelhaften Gesang von Reed glänzen alle Instrumentalisten der Band mit ausgezeichneten Skills. Die technischen Fähigkeiten sind auf einem sehr hohen Level und man kann nur Füllhörner voll des Lobes über sie ausschütten. So schaffen es OSYRON progressive Strukturen mit vielen Details zu erschaffen ohne den Hörer zu überfordern. Sie bewahren sich trotzdem mit großartigen Melodien und epischen Chören eine Eingängigkeit, die Euch immer wieder einfängt. Es entsteht eine atemberaubende Dynamik und man gerät immer wieder ins Staunen, was OSYRON alles in einem einzelnen Song aus dem Hut zaubern.

Und damit sind sie für mich das Highlight in diesem Jahr. Glückwunsch!

Progressive Metal is a big cosmos . Because what distinguishes this category is the fact that these bands deliberately sometimes more and sometimes less go beyond boundaries in their music and combine different things in their music. Mostly these albums are characterized by a high technical standard. My editor colleague Doc Rock is more at home in this genre than I am, but nevertheless there are always albums that also inspire me very much. And those would be this year:

ODDLAND

plays Progressive Metal with a healthy hardness and without getting too lost in extreme gimmicks, although their compositions can be described as artful. A trademark of ODDLAND (Facebook) are the extravagant melodic soundscapes, which are created here besides the piano among other things with a soprano saxophone. This is played by guitarist Jussi Poikonen himself. I was already able to convince myself of the band’s abilities live.

„Vermilion Oceans“ has become a work of art and reveals the band’s ingenious abilities to move away from standardized paths. The band is able to create different moods, ranging from mystical to dystopian to harmonic and even epic soundscapes. Accordingly, singer Saki also appears multifaceted. With a lot of feeling or but also hardness he adapts to the moods. I also liked the bass player ???? because the bass is really cool.

ARDARITH

is an ambitious Metal project (Facebook) in which no less than 5 singers have collaborated with 11 musicians to create the album „Home“, which has a moving story to tell. The concept is based on a main character named „Me“ who, due to war and ruin, has to leave his homeland to find a new home.

An intense roller coaster of musical impressions awaits the open-minded listener. The song structures are partly challenging, but also make someone listen to the album again and again. Because every time there is something new to discover and the songs unfold more and more their effect. You could describe the album as a colorful kaleidoscope of sounds with always new impressions. But in the same way the music is as interesting as a good book with great suspense arcs and changing scenarios. From the variety of musical ideas ARDARITH would be on place 1.

AMORPHIS

AMOPRPHIS (Facebook) once started as a Death Metal band, but in the course of time got rid of the shackles and gave their sound more and more facets. And so it comes that the new album „Halo“ has landed here in the category of Progressive Metal. AMORPHIS have been developing into a progressive band for quite some time. The arrangements are not always predictable, tend to surprises and they are not afraid to include exotic sounds.

For example, in the middle of the song „Northwards“ you are surprised by a chilling part, which is garnished with a beautiful melodic guitar solo and then completely cool replaced by a Hammond organ, which could be heard in the background before. There is a dreamlike duet with „My Name Is The Night“. A tender song with singer Petronella Nettermalm, who delivers a ravishing performance here with her beautiful voice and sounds just wonderful in the duet with Tomi Joutsen. All in all, an excellent album that once again confirms why the band is so succesful. An album by AMORPHIS is always a great experience. And if it was only about the hymn factor, AMOPHIS would be at first place. (Review)

But for me, one band has made it, always providing surprises, and that’s….

OSYRON

from Canada are for me one of the bands that absolutely deserve much more attention. It’s not only the high technical level that inspires me. It’s also the seemingly limitless creativity with which OSYRON (Facebook) creates their songs. Their previous works show that they are comfortable in many areas. The new album „Momentous“ was therefore already a surprise for me again.

Because now they included authentic folk music to their sound. Exactly such sounds determine the beginning of the opener „Anunnaki“, which come from the band PERCIVAL SCHUTTENBACH (Facebook). These are the musicians Mikołaj Rybacki and Katarzyna Bromirska. They can be heard now and then on the album and it actually sounds pretty cool. They give the music a very special atmosphere. And the new album has become harder and darker than what you’ve heard before. A whole new level, also in terms of technical skills.

The range of singer Reed Alton is exceptional and remarkable. This delicate clear voice compared to the powerful sung parts to the total evil escalation are very impressive. Besides the fabulous vocals of Reed, all instrumentalists of the band shine with excellent skills. Thus OSYRON manage to create progressive structures with many details without overwhelming the listener. They still keep a catchiness with great melodies and epic choirs that catches you again and again. A breathtaking dynamic is created and you are always amazed at what OSYRON conjure everything out of the hat in a single song.

And that makes them the highlight for me this year. Congratulations!

Willkommen zum nächsten Teil von METALHEADs Toplist 2022! Heute ausschließlich mit

POWER METAL!

Denn dieses Jahr waren in dieser Kategorie viele tolle Alben vertreten. Es gab leider nicht zu allen starken Alben Rezensionen bei uns. Hier seien z.B. EVERGREY mit „A Heartless Portrait“ und BOREALIS mit „Illusions“ genannt, die sicherlich auch zu den besten Veröffentlichungen in diesem Bereich zählen.

In der illustren Auswahl der Besten findet sich auf jeden Fall auch das Album

„Survive“ von STRATOVARIUS.

Meine Kollege Uwe hatte das Album rezensiert und bescheinigt STRATOVARIUS (Facebook) eine hohe Qualität. Ich zitiere aus dem Review: „Tatsächlich zeigt bereits der Opener „Survive“, dass Stratovarius nichts verlernt haben. Wie mann es von ihnen gewohnt ist, geht es schnell, kraftvoll und melodiös zur Sache.“ (Review)

Und dem kann ich mich nur anschließen. Technisch kann man den Männern ohnehin nichts vormachen. Die Songs sind perfekt inszeniert und der Gesang von Timo Kotipelto ist wie gewohnt makellos. Wer sehr viel Wert auf schmeichelnde Melodien legt, ist hier goldrichtig und wird mit dem Album sehr sehr glücklich sein.

BLIND GUARDIAN

haben sich ebenfalls nach langer Abstinenz mit ihrem Album „The God Machine“ verdammt eindrucksvoll zuückgemeldet. Auch dieses Album wurde von meinem Kollegen Uwe ebenfalls als erstklassiges Werk eingestuft. Ich zitiere: „Hansi Kürsch, Markus Siepen und Co. knüpfen härtetechnisch an ihre Frühwerke an und lassen es richtig krachen. Natürlich haben sie sich technisch weiter entwickelt, so dass hier schon ein ordentlicher Unterschied zu ihren alten Alben erkennbar ist.“ (Review)

Und ich stimme Uwe völlig zu. Ich bin froh, dass BLIND GUARDIAN die Härte und Geradlinigkeit aus alten Zeiten wiedergefunden haben und diese gekonnt mit ihrer progressiven Herangehensweise der letzten Alben verwoben haben. So ist „The God Machine“ eine machtvolle Demonstration ihrer musikalischen Künste. Hervorragend!

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT

sind eine erstklassige Power Metal Band, die Jens Faber ins Leben gerufen hat. Sie machen keinen Hehl daraus, dass SAVATAGE als Inspiration für ihre Musik dienen. Zum Glück nutzen sie diese Inspiration nicht dazu eine bloße Kopie zu werden. Sie machen ihr eigenes Ding und das machen sie hervorragend. Die inspirierenden Momente, die an Savatage erinnern, sind zweifelsohne vorhanden, doch sie sind Nuancen in einem Sound, der sich seine Eigenständigkeit bewahrt.

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) vereinen im Album „Hell“ ein eigene musikalische Konzeption mit einer Hommage an die Band Savatage, was insgesamt zu einer kunstvollen höchst unterhaltsamen Darbietung wird. Das Konzept ist sehr stimming und ausgewogen. Einerseits stürmt kraftvolle Leidenschaft erhaben in glänzender stählerner Rüstung mit dem Schwert voran und andererseits werden schmeichelnde Emotionen in ein instrumentales anschmiegsames Gewand gekleidet. Alles ist mit hochwertigen Ingredienzien miteinander geschmiedet und verwoben worden, so dass das Album mit guten bis genialen Songs aufwarten kann. Am Ende des Album schenkt uns die Band noch eine grandiose Coverversion des SAVATAGE Klassikers „When The Crowds Are Gone“. (Review)

HEXED

aus Schweden gehen das Thema bombastisch an. Das Album „Pagans Rising“ ist eine epische cineastische Reise. Die Songs drehen sich um das Thema der Hexenverfolgung in Schweden (siehe dazu Interview und Hintergrundbericht). Alleine das Cover-Artwork ist eine Augenweide. Und dies setzt sich musikalisch auf dem Album fort.

Sängerin Tina hat eine der vielseitigsten und besten Stimmen in diesem Metal-Genre. Sie hat eine Kraft in ihrer Stimme, die Euch wie ein stürmischer Orkan anbrüllt. Trotz ihrer wahnsinnigen Energie kann sie Euch auch mit viel Gefühl verzaubern. So entsteht eie HEXED (Facebook) eine gesangliche Leistung, die zu begeistern weiß. An Ihrer Seite sind ebenfalls großartige Musiker (unter anderem ihr Ehemann), die Euch mit wundervollen Songs unterhalten.

HEXED haben mit „Pagans Rising“ einen akustischen Blockbuster erschaffen. Das Album vollzieht eine epische Reise mit kraftvollen opulenten Songs, die mit imposanter Magie eindringliche Geschichten erzählen. Es wird trotz Bombast viel Wert auf ein ausgeglichenes Hörerlebnis gelegt und man hat es sich zur Mission gemacht, die Songs mit viel spürbarer Dynamik zu versehen, die sich aus wunderschönen Melodienbögen und energischer Härte zusammensetzt. Sehr beeindruckend! (Review)

DAWN OF DESTINY

Na so was… Schon wieder Jens Faber. Er hat meinen allergrößten Respekt, indem er zwei sehr gute Alben in einem Jahr mit zwei unterschiedlichen Bands veröffentlicht hat. Denn auch DAWN OF DESTINY (Facebook) ist eine Band des Musikers, die es schon seit 2005 gibt und seitdem viele hochwertige Alben produziert hat. Das diesjährige Werk „Of Silence“ gehört jedenfalls eindeutig dazu. Das Album ist mit 13 Songs randvoll gepackt und glänzt mit einer Spielzeit von über einer Stunde. Der Härtegrad im melodischen Konzept gefällt mir außerordentlich gut. Da ist von allem etwas dabei.

DAWN OF DESTINY gelingt mit ihrem neuen Album „Of Silence“ ein Geniestreich. Selten hört man ein Album, welches über eine solch lange Spielzeit die Spannung aufrecht erhalten und für Überraschungen sorgen kann. Hier gelingt es mit eindrucksvollen abwechslungreichen Kompositionen ein homogenes Gesamtbild zu gestalten. (Review)

Doch kommen wir nun zu der Band, welche für mich das Power-Metal-Album des Jahres erschaffen hat.

SEVENTH STORM

Kein geringerer als Mike Gaspar, der zuvor bei MOONSPELL als Drummer lange Zeit die Felle geprügelt hat, hat diese Band ins Leben gerufen und mit „Maledictus“ dieses Jahr ihr Debütalbum veröffentlicht. Und dieses Album ist auf Anhieb eine wahre Offenbarung geworden, die mit Kraft und Emotionen eine epische dichte Atmosphäre erzeugt. Alles ist mit viel Liebe zum Detail ausgearbeitet worden und alle Beteiligten zeigen eine perfekte Performance, die sogar stellenweise ins Progressive geht.

Sänger Rez weiß seine kraftvolle voluminöse Stimme perfekt einzusetzen. Man spürt, dass er voller Inbrunst aus tiefstem Herzen seine Töne zelebriert. Dabei ist egal, ob er im kraftvollen Modus agiert oder die gefühlvolle Seite offenbart. SEVENTH STORM hinterlässt einen bleibenden grandiosen Eindruck. Mit dieser Band würde ich durch jeden Sturm segeln. (Review)

I quote: „Hansi Kürsch, Markus Siepen and Co. are recognizing their early works in terms of hardness and really let it rip. Of course, they have technically developed further, so that here is already a decent difference to their old albums recognizable.„(Review)

And I totally agree with Uwe. I am glad that BLIND GUARDIAN (Facebook) have rediscovered the hardness and straightforwardness from old times and have skillfully interwoven it with their progressive approach of the last albums. So „The God Machine“ is a powerful demonstration of their musical arts. Outstanding!

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT

are a top-notch Power Metal band brought to life by Jens Faber. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT make no secret of the fact that SAVATAGE serve as inspiration for their music. Fortunately, they don’t use this inspiration to become a mere copy. They do their own thing and they do it brilliantly. The inspirational moments reminiscent of Savatage are undoubtedly there, but they are nuances in a sound that retains its independence.

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) combine in the album „Hell“ their own musical concept with a tribute to the band Savatage, which altogether becomes an artistic highly entertaining performance. The concept is very harmonious and balanced. On the one hand, powerful passion storms forward sublimely in shining steel armor with the sword and on the other hand, flattering emotions are dressed in an instrumental cuddly garment. Everything has been forged and woven together with high-quality ingredients, so that the album can come up with good to brilliant songs. At the end of the album the band gives us a great cover version of the SAVATAGE classic „When The Crowds Are Gone“. (Review)

HEXED

from Sweden take a bombastic approach to the subject. The album „Pagans Rising“ is an epic cinematic journey. All songs revolve around the topic of witch hunts in Sweden (Interview, background of the album). The cover artwork is a feast for the eyes. And this continues musically on the album.

Singer Tina has one of the most versatile and best voices in this metal genre. She has a power in her voice that roars at you like a stormy hurricane. Despite her insane energy, she can also enchant you with a lot of feeling. This is how HEXED (Facebook) creates a vocal performance that knows how to inspire. She has a great support by the other musicians (including her husband), who entertain you with wonderful songs.

HEXED have created an acoustic blockbuster with „Pagans Rising“. The album completes an epic journey with powerful opulent songs that tell haunting stories with imposing magic. There is a lot of emphasis on a balanced listening experience despite the bombast and has made it a mission to provide the songs with a lot of palpable dynamics, composed of beautiful melodic arcs and energetic harshness. Very impressive! (Review)

DAWN OF DESTINY

And already Jens Faber appears again. He has my utmost respect by releasing two very good albums in one year with two different bands. Because DAWN OF DESTINY (Facebook) is also a band of this musician, which already exists since 2005 and has produced many high-quality albums since then. In any case, this year’s album „Of Silence“ clearly belongs to them. The album is packed to the brim with 13 songs and shines with a playing time of over an hour. The degree of hardness in the melodic concept pleases me extraordinarily well. There is something of everything.

DAWN OF DESTINY succeeds with their new album „Of Silence“ a stroke of genius. Rarely you hear an album that can maintain the tension over such a long playing time and provide surprises. Here it succeeds with impressive varied compositions, which in themselves give a homogeneous overall picture. (Review)

But now let’s get to the band that created the Power Metal album of the year for me.

SEVENTH STORM

Mike Gaspar, being the drummer of MOONSPELL for a long time, has created SEVENTH STORM and released their debut album this year with „Maledictus“. And this album has become a true revelation right away, creating an epic dense atmosphere with power and emotion. Everything has been worked out with great attention to detail and all involved show a perfect performance that even goes progressive in places.

Singer Rez knows how to use his powerful voluminous voice perfectly. You can feel that he celebrates his vocals from the bottom of his heart. It does not matter whether he acts in the powerful mode or reveals the soulful side. SEVENTH STORM leaves a lasting grandiose impression. I would sail through any storm with this band. (Review)

Es ist ein spannendes und äußerst unterhaltsames Abenteuer mit vielen unterschiedlichen Geschichten, die sowohl kompositorisch als auch textlich auf vielfältige Weise beeindrucken und den Hörer einfangen. Neben eingängigen mitreißenden Tracks halten die Jungs coole Überraschungen parat, die das Album noch mit einem zusätzlichen Boost zu einem aufregenden sehr kurzweiligen Erlebnis werden lassen. (Review) Und damit haben sie sich einen Platz in METALHEADs Toplist verdient.

Diese Jahr brachten RAMMSTEIN ihr Album „Zeit“ heraus. Der Titeltrack war die erste Single und hatte mich echt total in seine Bann gezogen. Ich war davon überzeugt, dass das ein Mega-Album werden wird. Und dann? Nun, es kam dann doch etwas anders. Es ist ein gutes Album, aber mit Schwächen. Das muss man einfach sagen. Ein Song wie „Dicke Titten“ ist einfach nur stumpf und primitiv und auch andere Songs sind eher mäßig. Aber es sind auch gute und sehr gute Songs auf dem Album. Somit trafen RAMMSTEIN leider nicht komplett meinen Geschmack. Dafür taten das aber

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter.

Diese haben mit dem Album „Wilde Kinder“ das vielseitigste Album ihrer Karriere und geizen dabei nicht mit gnadenloser Härte. Doch Härte ist nicht alles! Der Albumtitel „Wilde Kinder“ könnte nicht besser passen. Zwischen Anarchie und Seemannsromantik versprühen die Songs fantasievolle Wildheit und Verspieltheit von Kindern, die keine Grenzen kennt. DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER (Facebook) haben sich diesen Geist bewahrt und ihn mit diesem Album eindrucksvoll und mitreißend ausgelebt. (Review)

SILENZER

sind nicht nur ein frischer Wind in der Szene. Sie sind ein gewaltiger Sturm. Auf ihrem Album „X“ bedienen sie sich aller emotionalen Facetten, um ernste und traurige Themen aufzuarbeiten. So werden nicht nur gesanglich alle Register gezogen. Die Jungs explodieren förmlich vor kreativen Ideen und schaffen sich ihr eigenes Sounduniversum. SILENZER (Facebook) agieren so vielseitig, dass man von ihnen alles erwarten könnte. So aufgestellt stehen ihnen alle Wege offen. Diese Mischung gefällt mir außerordentlich gut.

Die Jungs wissen schon, wie man heftig auf den Putz haut und was mir immer wieder in den Songs auffällt ist die Tatsache, dass viel passiert. Und doch ist alles so aufeinander abgestimmt, dass es einfach 100 %ig passt. So entwickeln die Songs einen ganz eigenen Flow, der Euch total mitnehmen wird. Auch gesanglich wird viel geboten. Von dunklen Growls über energiegeladenen Gesang bis hin zu fantastischen Melodien im Refrain wird alles geboten. (Review)

LAUTSTÄRKE

This year RAMMSTEIN released their album „Zeit“. The title track was the first single and really had me under its spell. I was convinced that this was going to be a mega album. And then? Well, it turned out a little different. It’s a good album, but with weaknesses. You just have to say that. A song like „Dicke Titten“ is just dull and primitive and also other songs are rather mediocre. But there are also good and very good songs on the album. So RAMMSTEIN unfortunately didn’t meet my taste completely. But for that did

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter.

SILENZER

are not just a breath of fresh air in the metal scene. They are a mighty storm. On their album „X“ they use all emotional facets to express serious and sad topics. So not only vocally all registers are pulled. The guys literally explode with creative ideas and create their own sound universe. SILENZER (Facebook) act so versatile that you could expect everything from them. Thus set up all ways are open to them. I like this mixture extraordinarily well.

The guys already know how to hit hard. And yet everything is so coordinated that it just fits 100%. So the songs develop a very own flow that will totally take you along. Also vocally, an strong amount is offered. From dark growls to energetic singing to fantastic melodies in the chorus can be heared. (Review)

Eine Flut von Veröffentlichungen

überschwemmt mittlerweile den Musikmarkt und die ‚metal-heads.de‘-Redaktion. Die Übersichtlichkeit, die es noch vor 30 Jahren gab, ist nicht mehr gegeben. Es ist schier unmöglich alle Veröffentlichungen zu berücksichtigen, auch wenn man es sich zur Aufgabe macht nur die Alben zu rezensieren, die einem persönlich am besten gefallen. Das klappt schon gar nicht, wenn man wie ich ein sehr breites Spektrum hat und nicht nur eine bestimmte Richtung bevorzugt. Jetzt aber zu meinen persönlichen Favoriten.

Ich persönlich könnte alle 78 Alben empfehlen, die ich dieses Jahr rezensiert habe. Trotzdem werde ich noch mal die auswählen, die mich am meisten beeindruckt haben. Seht meine Toplist als das, was es ist: Eine persönliche Empfehlung meiner absoluten Favoriten in diesem Jahr. Und interessant finde ich, dass sich in dieser Liste zwei indische Bands tummeln. Die erste Band wird gleich heute schon Erwähnung finden.

Hardrock

Mädhouse

Dringen wir nun in die Soundwelten der elektrischen Gitarren vor und beginnen mit der Kategorie ‚Hardrock‘ / ‚Glamrock‘. Die Österreicher MÄDHOUSE (Facebook) haben nur ein Jahr nach ihrem letzten tollen Album „Bad Habits“ das neue Album „Down ’n‘ Dirty“ veröffentlicht. Qualitativ gibt man sich weiterhin keine Blöße und haut wieder einen geilen Kracher raus. Es ist wieder eine Sammlung von Songs, mit denen man jede Party befeuern kann. Die Männer leben ihren Sound und das hört man in jedem Song. MÄDHOUSE reiten den rassigen Glam-Metal-Hengst vortrefflich und liefern mit „Down ’n‘ Dirty“ einen heißen Ritt. Geil! (Review)

LAST TEMPTATION

(Facebook) haben dieses Jahr mit ihrem Album „Fuel For My Soul“ starke Steigerung im Vergleich zum Debütalbum vollzogen. Der Gesang hat sich meiner Meinung nach erheblich verbessert und kommt facettenreicher und vor allem mit mehr Power rüber. LAST TEMPTATION haben auf ihrem aktuellen Album “ Fuel For My Soul“ ihrem Sound eine erheblich höhere Oktanzahl verpasst und sorgen für richtiger Power. Da zünden die Kolben und der Sound rockt knackig und saftig aus den Boxen. LAST TEMPTATION spielen von allen Fesseln befreit auf und explodieren mit 11 starken Tracks auf, die allesamt echter Sprit für eure Seelen sind. (Review)

HALESTORM

(Facebook) haben mich mit ihrem Album „Back From The Dead“ dieses Jahr mehr als überzeugt. Der Titeltrack als erste Single rockte schon los wie die Sau und knallte direkt mit wuchtigen Ohrlaschen rein. Die Songs sind Rockhymnen, die in Mark und Bein gehen. Hier gibt es einen Killersong nach dem nächsten! (Review) Und auch wenn HALESTORM die Messlatte für dieses Jahr mächtig hoch gehängt haben, so wurde sie für meinen Geschmack doch noch von einer Band übersprungen.

GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES

GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES (Facebook) aus Indien haben mich mit ihrem Album „Hail To The Heroes“ einfach weggeblasen. Der Sound klingt mehr old school, aber keineswegs angestaubt und rockt einfach höllisch heiß. Eine elektrisierende Vorstellung in jeder Hinsicht. Jeder Song setzt Euch unter Strom. Die Jungs haben irre viel Power und Engergie. Keine Ahnung, ob die täglich Batterien lutschen, aber die Band feuert eine elektrisierende Soundgranate nach der anderen ab. Und dann präsentiert man noch so eine Monsterballade „Heaven’s Crying“ mit epischen Ausmaßen.

„Hail To The Heroes“ ist eine beeindruckende Demonstration von berauschendem Hard- bzw. Glamrock, der mit unheimlich viel Dynamik und Power umgesetzt wurde. Dabei sprühen die Jungs nicht nur vor Energie, sondern sind auch voller pfiffiger Ideen, die immer wieder für Abwechslung und Begeisterung sorgen. Damit haben sie für mich eindeutig den Thron erobert. (Review)

Die Kultrocker CIRCLE CREEK

(Facebook/Homepage) aus Österreich haben im August ihr neues Album „The World Is On Fire“ rausgefeuert. CIRCLE CREEK impfen ihren Sound immer mal wieder mit coolen Ideen, die Pepp in das Ganze bringen. Beispielsweise spielt man auch mal mit einer sexy Frauenstimme oder, man mag es kaum glauben, mit Walgesängen. „The World Is On Fire“ ein echt cooles Rock’n Roll Album gelungen, welches ernste Themen mit einer schmutzigen fetzigen Portion Craziness anpackt. Eine melancholische Seite schwingt manchmal mit, aber es bleibt trotzdem ein lebendiges unterhaltsames Album. (Review)

Ab geht’s nach Schweden

zu BATTERING RAM (Facebook), die dieses Jahr mit ihrem Album „Second To None“ bei mir für gute Laune gesorgt haben. Direkt mit der ersten Single „Coming Home“ hatten BATTERING RAM mich schon total abgeholt. Dieser Song ist schlichtweg ein grandioser Ohrwurm, der Euch garantiert nicht mehr aus dem Kopf gehen wird. „Second To None“ überzeugt auf ganzer Linie mit großartigen Hooks mit einer antreibenden und coolen Heavy Rock-Mischung. Sänger Johan schenkt den Songs obendrein einen ganz besonderen Charme, dem man sich nicht enziehen kann. Ihnen gelingt es eingängige druckvolle Songs mitreißend und sympathisch zu inszenieren. Eine volle Dröhnung geiler Rock mit hohem Unterhaltungsfaktor!

Krönung in Sachen Rock ’n Roll

CROSSPLANE (Facebook) aus dem Ruhrpott haben dieses Jahr mit ihrem Album „Fastlane“ (El Puerto Records) einen Volltreffer gelandet. Wenn CROSSPLANE loslegen, dann wird nicht vorsichtig mit einem Intro angeklopft! Da fliegt der Stiefel in die Tür, die Tür fliegt aus den Angeln und rumms…. es knallt direkt und man gibt Vollgas! Trotzdem überrascht die Band mit einer coolen ruhigen Nummer. „Black Is My Blue Sky“ fährt das Tempo runter und der Song hat irgendwie einen doomigen Touch und sogar der Blues scheint hier und da durch.

CROSSPLANE perfektionieren dabei weiter ihren Sound und sprühen dabei vor Spielwitz und Spielfreude, was einen von vorne bis hinten begeistert. Die Songs klopfen nicht höflich an, sondern treten mit Schmackes die Tür ein, reißen Euch von der Couch und kicken Euch zur Vollgas-Rock’n Roll-Tour! (Review)

A tsunami of publications

is flooding the music market and the ‚metal-heads.de‘ editorial team. The overview that existed 30 years ago is no longer given. It is almost impossible to take all releases into account, even if you make it your business to review only the albums that you personally like the most. That doesn’t work at all, if you have a very broad spectrum like me and don’t prefer only a certain musicaly direction.

Personally, I could recommend all 78 albums I reviewed this year. Still, I’ll pick the ones that impressed me the most. See my top list for what it is: a personal recommendation of my absolute favorites this year. And I find it interesting that there are two Indian bands in this list. The first band will be mentioned here today.

Hardrock

Mädhouse

Let’s now enter the sound worlds of electric guitars and start with the category ‚Hardrock‘ / ‚Glamrock‘. The Austrians MÄDHOUSE (Facebook) have released the new album „Down ’n‘ Dirty“ only one year after their last great album „Bad Habits“. Qualitatively, they continue to play on a high entertaining level and whips out again horny firecrackers. It is again a collection of songs with which you can fire up any party. The men live their sound and you can hear that in every song. MÄDHOUSE ride the racy Glam Metal stallion excellently and deliver a hot ride with „Down ’n‘ Dirty“. Awesome! (Review)

LAST TEMPTATION

(Facebook) have made this year with their album „Fuel For My Soul“ a strong increase compared to the debut album. The vocals have improved considerably in my opinion and come across more multifaceted and above all with more power. LAST TEMPTATION have given their sound a considerably higher octane on their current album “ Fuel For My Soul“ and provide real power. The pistons ignite and the sound rocks crisp and juicy out of the speakers. LAST TEMPTATION play freed from all shackles and explode with 11 strong tracks, which are all real fuel for your souls. HALESTORM

(Facebook) have more than convinced me with their album „Back From The Dead“ this year. The title track as the first single already bited like an agressive lion and banged directly with full power. The songs are rock anthems that thrill through and through. There is one killer song after the next! (Review) And even if HALESTORM have hung the bar for this year mighty high, but for me it was still jumped over by the band…

GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES (Facebook) from India just blew me away with their album „Hail To The Heroes“. The songs sounds more old school, but not at all boring but rocks hot as hell. An electrifying performance in every sense of the word. Every song puts you under power. The guys have a lot of strength and energy. No idea if they suck batteries every day, but the band fires one electrifying sound grenade after the other. And then they present such a monster ballad „Heaven’s Crying“ with epic dimensions.

„Hail To The Heroes“ is an impressive demonstration of intoxicating Hardrock, which was implemented with an incredible amount of dynamics and power. The guys are not only bursting with energy, but are also full of smart ideas that provide variety and enthusiasm again and again. Thus, they have clearly conquered the throne for me. (Review)

Heavy Rock

The rocker CIRCLE CREEK

(Facebook/Homepage) from Austria released their new album „The World Is On Fire“ in August. CIRCLE CREEK inoculate their sound every now and then with cool ideas that bring special spice into the whole thing. For example, they sometimes play with a sexy female voice or, you may hardly believe it, with whale sounds. „The World Is On Fire“ a really cool rock’n roll album succeeded, which tackles serious topics with a dirty groovy portion of craziness. A melancholic side sometimes resonates, but it still remains a lively entertaining album. (Review)

Off to Sweden

with BATTERING RAM (Facebook), who put me in a good mood this year with their album „Second To None“. Directly with the first single „Coming Home“ BATTERING RAM had already totally picked me up. This song is simply a great hit, which is guaranteed to stuck in your head.

„Second To None“ convinces all along with great hooks in a driving and cool heavy rock mixture. Singer Johan gives the songs on top a very special charm that you can not escape. They succeed in staging catchy powerful songs in a rousing and likeable way. A full blast of horny heavy melodic Rock! (Review)

Crowning final in Rock ’n Roll

CROSSPLANE (Facebook) from Germany have hit the bull’s eye this year with their album „Fastlane“ (El Puerto Records). When CROSSPLANE get into the house, there is no careful knocking with an intro! There the boot flies into the door, the door flies off the hinges and rumms…. it bangs directly and you give full punch! Still, the band surprises with a cool quiet number. „Black Is My Blue Sky“ drives the tempo down and the song has somehow a doomy touch and even the blues shines through here and there.

CROSSPLANE continue to perfect their sound and sparkle with playfulness and joy, which inspires you from front to back. The songs don’t knock politely, but kick in the door with gusto, snatch you off the couch and kick you to full throttle rock’n roll tour! (Review)
