VOLBEAT mit „Servant Of The Mind“ 

Keiner ist mehr überrascht von der Tatsache, dass VOLBEAT mit ihrem neuen Album neuen Album in meiner Bestenliste 2021 auftauchen. Seit einer gefühlten Ewigkeit habe ich mir kein Album mehr zugelegt. Und plötzlich haben VOLBEAT mich wieder ins Boot geholt und in meine Bestenliste 2021 gerudert.

Das Album ist nicht perfekt, aber VOLBEAT kehren auf ihrem neuen Album „“Servant of the Mind“ wieder mehr zu ihren Wurzeln zurück, aber mit einem modernen kraftvollen Sound. Endlich mal wieder ein Album, dass die Qualität der Band aufzeigt und bis auf wenige Ausnahmen nicht zu weichgespült ist.

Das Album begeistert mit teils mutigen und außergewöhnlichen Songs. Michael Poulsen brilliert facettenreich mit seinen einzigartigen Vocals und die Gitarrenfront habe ich schon lange nicht mehr so vielseitig und spielfreudig gehört. Wenn man die Highlights dieses Albums aufgreift, weiter verfolgt und ausbaut, dann könnten VOLBEAT in Zukunft wieder für

flammenden Rock’n Roll-Metal

stehen, den sie wie kein anderer umsetzen können. Dieser eigenwillige Stil, den VOLBEAT damals für sich erfunden haben, ist mit einigen herausragenden Songs wiedergeboren und weiterentwickelt worden.

„The Devil Rages On“ ist für mich einfach der Burner auf dem Album. Das ist richtig heißer Scheiss. VOLBEAT brechen damit aus der Komfortzone aus und besinnen sich ihrer Qualitäten für außergewöhnliche Darbietungen. Dieser Song ist wie geschaffen für Michael, der hier geile Elvis-Vibes aufleben lässt. Der Song „Becoming“ haut Dir am Anfang mit dem energiegeladenen aggressiven Metalsound schön das Toupet von der Glatze.

Es müssen jedoch nicht immer die harten Riffs sein, denn VOLBEAT können auch einfach mit purem Rock’n Roll eine geile Show liefern. VOLBEAT haben dem Coversong „Domino“ einen guten Schliff und ne Dosis Power verpasst. Diese irrwitzige und abgefahrene Nummer macht super Laune. Mega!

VOLBEAT sind für mich die Überraschung bzw. Wiedergeburt des Jahres. Holt Euch auf jeden Fall die Deluxe Version des Albums! Die hat einen echten Mehrwert. (Review)

SMALL JACKETS – „Just Like This“

Wo wir gerade bei guter Laune sind… SMALL JACKETS (Homepage, Facebook)  haben zum Ende des Jahres ein irres Album abgeliefert. Ein Rockalbum, was ich so in der Art auch noch nie gehört habe. Mit ihrem Album „Just Like This“ bringen sie das Jahr mit einem tollen Rock’n Roll Album zu einem bewegenden Ende. Bewegend deswegen, weil die Songs so viel Leben in sich haben, dass es nur so knallt. Auf jeden Fall wäre das ein perfekter Soundtrack für die Feier zum Jahreswechsel.

Auf dem Album fetzen rockig freche Riffs aus den Boxen, die einem einfach keine Wahl lassen als es geil zu finden. Der Groove kommt nicht auf leisen Sohlen angeschlichen, sondern packt Euch laut und heftig.  Genial finde ich diesen irren Funk, der z.B. beim Song „Funky Crunchy Woman“ von mir Besitzt ergreift und mich abzappeln lässt. Einerseits total lässig, aber gleichzeitig voll crazy. 

SMALL JACKETS laden mit ihrem Album „Just Like This“ zu einem irren Rockfeuerwerk ein. Sie haben alles, was im Rock‘ n Roll groovt und fetzt, in die Waagschale geworfen und toben sich nach Herzenslust nach allen Regeln der verrückten Kunst aus. Am Ende überraschen SMALL JACKETS dann aber doch noch mit der ruhigen Nummer „Celebrate“. Dieser Song ist der perfekte Abschluss und verwöhnt mit soooo viel Charme und Atmosphäre, dass man ganz gechillt wird. (Review)

FIERCE DEITY mit „Power! Wisdom! Courage!“

FIERCE DEITY (Facebook) aus Australien ist bereits Stammgast hier bei `metal-heads.de´. Wer mal die Suchfunktion bemüht, der wird einige Beiträge zu diesem Ausnahmekünstler finden. Ich hatte sogar wieder ein Interview mit ihm (Link), welches wieder interessante Einblicke in die Person Jonathon Barwick bietet, der sich hinter FIERCE DEITY verbirgt. Die Interviews gewähren auch Einblicke, worum es in den Songs inhaltlich geht. Dahinter steckt nämlich eine ganz persönliche Geschichte.

Jetzt setzt FIERCE DEITY mit seinem neuen Werk „Power Wisdom Courage“ die Reise genau an diesem Punkt fort. Das Album hat eine Spielzeit von knapp 33 Minuten, welche auf nur drei Songs verteilt wird. Es ist die Reise einen Mannes, eine fesselnde persönliche Geschichte! Dies hört man in jeder Faser der Musik. Der Musiker selber nennt seinen Musikstil Stoner Power Metal!

Das Album ist Leidenschaft pur! Ein epischer Kraftakt, dessen geniale Heavyness den Funken sofort auf den Hörer überspringen lässt. Euch erwarten fette stonergeschwängerte Riffs, wundervolle Melodien und kraftvolle Grooves. Auch der Einsatz der Synthies ist super gemacht. Als Beispiel sei hier das megamäßige Keyboardsolo in Verbindung mit dem anschließenden famosen Gitarrensolo bei Song „Power“ genannt. Power hat auch die Produktion des Albums. Der Klang ist phänomenal und dröhnt mit sattem Druck aus den Boxen. (Review)

LORD OF THE LOST mit „Judas“

Zum Abschluss gehen wir noch mal in einer ganz andere musikalische Richtung. LORD OF THE LOST (Facebook) haben dieses Jahr ein Doppelalbum veröffentlicht. Grenzen waren für LORD OF THE LOST noch nie ein Thema, denn sie haben ihre Musik stets sehr facettenreich in Szene gesetzt. Grundsätzlich wandern LORD OF THE LOST eher auf dunklen Pfaden, haben dementsprechend Gothik, Dark Wave, Dark Rock und sogar Metal mit im Gepäck. Aber auch thematisch hebt sich das Album „Judas“ aus der Masse ab.

Der Titel verrät schon, worum es in den Songs geht. Wie man dem Albumtitel „Judas“ entnehmen kann, geht es um die tragischste Geschichte überhaupt im Neuen Testament. Der Verrat an Jesus durch einen seiner Jünger. Die Songtexte beziehen sich auch auf das sogenannte Judas-Evangelium, das man nicht in der Bibel findet. Diese apokryphen Schriften ( Wikipedia ) tauchten später auf und sollen Gespräche zwischen Jesus und Judas als Inhalt haben. Die Songs lassen sich von ihrer Aussagekraft jedoch ebenfalls auf uns Normalsterbliche und unser Leben übertragen.

LORD OF THE LOST feiern mit der Auferstehung des kolossalen Konzeptalbums „Judas“ das wohl am meisten ausgereifte Album der Bandgeschichte. Dies zieht sich von dem schlichten aber gelungenen Cover-Artwork, über die lyrischen gehaltvollen Texte, die Raum für Interpretationen lassen, bis hin zu einem facettenreichen harmonischen musikalischen Erscheinungsbild.

Hierbei brilliert man mit großen Emotionen und brillanten Melodien, welche eine bedächtige und fesselnde Atmosphäre erschaffen. Eine sehr ausgewogene Balance zwischen bedächtigen leichten Liedern und härteren fundamentaleren Tracks. Ganz ungezügelte extreme Ausbrüche roher ungeschliffener Natur, wie man sie teilweise von anderen früheren Alben kennt, wird man hier allerdings nicht finden.  Trotzdem verkörpert das Album „Judas“ ein Erlebnis der ganz besonderen Art, dass man nicht verpassen sollte. Alles hat eine Ende!

Auch diese zugegebenermaßen sehr umfangreiche Liste meiner Topalben 2021 hat nun ein Ende. Trotz des Umfangs meiner persönlichen Highlights habe ich nur einen kleinen Teil von den hochkarätigen Veröffentlichungen abbilden können, die erschienen sind. Deshalb habe ich mir natürlich auch Anregungen bei meinen geschätzten Redaktionskollegen bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ geholt und habe mir auch Bestenlisten bei anderen Magazinen angeschaut. Und auch dort habe ich einige Highlights gefunden, die bisher nicht den Weg in meine Ohren gefunden hatten. Daher danke ich auch all denjenigen, die sich die Mühe gemacht haben ihre besten Alben für das Jahr 2021 aufzulisten.

Feiert schön…

… in das neue Jahr! Glauben wir mal ganz fest daran, dass im Jahr 2022 irgendwann wieder eine gewisse Normalität einkehrt. Ich freue mich wieder auf tolle Veröffentlichungen. Die ersten tollen Alben stehen schon in den Startlöchern. So viel kann ich schon mal sagen.

to the last part of my extensive „METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Part 4 – The Special Ones“! In the last part of my top list I would like to highlight albums that are difficult to put into a certain category. Therefore, these are also difficult to compare with other bands and are virtually without competition. But these albums have inspired me, so I would find it a great pity if they don’t appear in my list for this year. So be curious which bands made it to the last part.

VOLBEAT with „Servant Of The Mind“ 

No one is more surprised by the fact that VOLBEAT appear with their new album new album in my best list 2021. It feels like an eternity I haven’t bought an album. And suddenly VOLBEAT got me back on board and rowed into my best list 2021.

The album is not perfect, but VOLBEAT return on their new album „“Servant of the Mind“ again more to their roots, but with a modern powerful sound. Finally an album that shows the quality of the band and is not too soft with a few exceptions.

The album inspires with partly bold and unusual songs. Michael Poulsen shines multi-faceted with his unique vocals and the guitar front I have not heard so versatile and playful for a long time. If the highlights of this album are picked up, followed up and expanded upon, VOLBEAT could once again stand for

blazing Rock ’n Roll Metal

in the future, which they can execute like no other. This individual style that VOLBEAT invented for themselves back in the day has been reborn and developed with some outstanding songs.

 „The Devil Rages On“ is for me a real burner. This is really hot shit. VOLBEAT break out of the comfort zone and reflect on their qualities for extraordinary performances. This song is just made for Michael, who brings horny Elvis vibes to life here. It sounds mega cool. The song surprises at every turn and exudes a dark Western style with fancy guitar sounds. This is a song that would have definitely freaked out the crowd in ‚Titty Twister‘ from the movie „From Dusk Till Dawn“. That’s how I want to hear VOLBEAT!

„Becoming“ hits you at the beginning with the energetic aggressive sound that blows you away.

But it doesn’t always have to be the hard riffs, because VOLBEAT can also simply deliver an awesome show with pure Rock’n Roll. The most insane and wacky song is „Domino“!

VOLBEAT are for me the surprise or rebirth of the year. Be sure to get the deluxe version of the album! It has a real added value. (Review)

SMALL JACKETS – „Just Like This“

Speaking of good mood… SMALL JACKETS (Homepage, Facebook) have delivered the crazy album „Just Like This“ at the end of the year. A Rock album, which I have never heard in this way before. With their album „Just Like This“ they bring the year to a moving end with a great Rock’n Roll album. Moving because the songs have so much life in them that it just pops. In any case, this would be a perfect soundtrack for the celebration at the turn of the year.

On the album rocky cheeky riffs shred from the boxes, which leave you no choice but to find it cool.  The groove doesn’t creep up quiet, but grabs you loud and fierce.   I find this crazy funk ingenious, which, for example, takes possession of me during the song „Funky Crunchy Woman“ and makes me shake. On the one hand totally casual, but at the same time fully crazy. 

SMALL JACKETS invite with their album „Just Like This“ to a crazy Rock fireworks. They have thrown everything that grooves and shreds in Rock‘ n Roll into the scale. Their hearts burning for Rock‘ n Roll. At the same time it still internalizes the charismatic 70’s flair. „Just Like This“ is a hot and damn crazy album that exudes pure joy that immediately gets into your blood.

At the end, SMALL JACKETS still surprise with the quiet number „Celebrate“. This song is the perfect conclusion and spoils with soooo much charm and atmosphere that one becomes quite chilled. (Review)

FIERCE DEITY mit „Power! Wisdom! Courage!“

FIERCE DEITY (Facebook) from Australia is already a regular guest here at ‚metal-heads.de‘. If you try the search function, you will find some articles about this exceptional artist. Recently I had another interview with him (Link), which again offers interesting insights into the person Jonathon Barwick, who is behind FIERCE DEITY. The interviews also provide insights into what the songs are about. It is a very personal story behind his songs so far.

Now FIERCE DEITY continues the journey exactly at this point with his new album „Power Wisdom Courage“. The album has a playing time about 33 minutes, which is spread over only three songs. It is the journey of a man, a captivating personal story! You can hear this in every fiber of the music. The musician himself calls his musical style Stoner Power Metal!

The album is pure passion! An epic tour de force, whose ingenious heavyness makes the spark immediately jump to the listener. You can expect fat stonerprooved riffs, wonderful melodies and powerful grooves. The use of synths is also super done. As an example, the thrilling keyboard solo in conjunction with the subsequent fabulous guitar solo on song „Power“. The sound is phenomenal and blasts with rich pressure from the speakers.(Review)

LORD OF THE LOST with „Judas“

Finally, we go again in a completely different musical direction. LORD OF THE LOST (Facebook) have released a double album this year. Boundaries have never been an issue for LORD OF THE LOST, because they have always staged their music in a very multifaceted way. Basically, LORD OF THE LOST are walking on dark paths and have accordingly Gothic, Dark Wave, Dark Rock and even Metal in the luggage. But also thematically the album „Judas“ stands out from the crowd.

The title already reveals what the songs are about. As you can see from the album title „Judas“, it’s about the most tragic story ever in the New Testament. The betrayal of Jesus by one of his disciples. The song lyrics also refer to the so-called Gospel of Judas, which is not found in the Bible. These apocryphal writings emerged later and are said to have conversations between Jesus and Judas as content. The songs can be transferred from their expressiveness, however, also to humanity and our lives.

LORD OF THE LOST celebrate with the resurrection of the colossal concept album „Judas“ probably the most mature album in the band’s history. This extends from the simple but successful cover artwork, to the lyrical meaty lyrics that leave room for interpretation, to a multi-faceted harmonic musical appearance.

This album shines with great emotions and brilliant melodies that create a thoughtful and captivating atmosphere. A very balanced between thoughtful light songs and harder more fundamental tracks. Quite unbridled extreme outbursts of raw unpolished nature, as known in part from other previous albums, you will not find here.  Nevertheless, the album „Judas“ embodies an experience of a very special kind that should not be missed. Everything has an end!

Also this admittedly very extensive list of my top albums 2021 has now come to an end. Despite the extent of my personal highlights, I have only been able to represent a small part of the top-class releases that have appeared. That’s why I naturally also got some suggestions from my esteemed editorial colleagues at ‚metal-heads.de‘ and also looked at best lists at other magazines. And also there I found some highlights that had not found their way into my ears so far. So I also thank all those who took the work to list their best albums for the year 2021.

Have a fiery celebration…

… into the new year! Let’s believe that in 2022, a certain normality will return at some point. I’m looking forward to great releases again. The first great albums are already in the starting blocks. I can say that much already.

Willkommen bei „METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Teil 3“! Dieser Teil geleitet Euch in noch extreme und finstere Welten. Hier traut sich nicht jeder hin. Das ist etwas für die ganz hartgesottenen Metalfans.

Extreme Metal

Natürlich sind einige Richtungen des Metal schon ziemlich extrem. Und doch gibt es Bands, die lassen sich nicht einem der Subgenres zuordnen. Diese Bands vereinen in ihrem Sound nämlich mehrere extreme Spielarten, so dass man diese Bands nur unter dem Begriff Extreme Metal einordnen kann.

XAEL

aus den U.S.A. sind extrem in jeder Hinsicht. XAEL (Facebook)haben sich für ihre Musik ein eigenes Universum erschaffen. Es geht um den ewigen Kampf von Dynastien, menschliche und göttliche. Dabei ist die Musik harter Tobak und nicht leicht verdaulich. Dies zeigt auch ihr Album „Bloodtide Rising“, welches eine zerstörende Arie verkörpert, die der Naturgewalt eines schweren Unwetters gleicht. Es rollt wie ein Hurricane über Euch hinweg, nimmt Euch auseinander und lässt Euch in Einzelteilen zurück. Vor der Leistung des Schlagzeugers Joshua Nassaru Ward kann man nur den Hut ziehen. Das ist schon Hochleistungssport in der Schießbude. Akkorde und Rhythmen wechseln ihre Persönlichkeit immerfort und bauen sich zu einem progressiven Monster auf. Wahrhaftig können XAEL nicht nur die finstersten und brutalsten Fantasien Wirklichkeit werden lassen. Nein, sie brillieren zwischendurch mit einem Gespür für Melodien.

GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS

sind auf ihrem Album „3.6.2.4.“ etwas harmonischer unterwegs. Es ist eine Mischung aus Melodic Death und Black Metal mit symphonischen Einlagen. Allerdings wird der Gesang hier häufiger auch in cleaner melodischer Form dargeboten. GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS (Facebook) schmettern den Dreizack mit aller Gewalt in die Erde und lassen die Welt, einem gewaltigen Seebeben gleich, erzittern. „3.6.2.4“ ist ein mächtiges kolossales Album, dass Euch garantiert beindrucken wird. Es gibt auf dem Album keine Ausfälle, nur Monstertracks. Man wird von der gewaltigen Soundkulisse förmlich überwältigt. GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS kreieren reichhaltige Soundlandschaften gleich einem pompösen Kinoblockbuster. Alles wirkt wohldurchdacht, abwechslungsreich und doch homogen. Es ist eine interessante Mischung, mit der GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS meiner Meinung nach mit dem Sound ihres Debütalbums eine eigene Nische gefunden haben. (Review)

ZORNHEYM mit „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“

ZORNHEYM (Facebook) sind sehr vielseitig aufgestellt. Der Sound ist eine wahre Wundertüte der harten Künste und bedient sich auch symphonischer Elemente. Aber alles passt zu dem musikalischen Thema der Band und zur Geschichte und Inhalt der Alben. Wer mehr darüber wissen möchte, darf sich gerne das Interview mit Zorn durchlesen. (Interview „Faszination des Bösen“) Denn das Gesamtkonzept entspringt einer Geschichte um ein Anstalt namens „Zornheim“ und seiner nicht ganz so normalen Insassen. Zum ersten Album „Where Hatred Dwells and Darkness Reigns“ gab es zur Geschichte sogar ein Comic. Nun folgt mit „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ der zweite Teil der Geschichte.

ZORNHEYM bieten mit „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ ein extremes cineastisches Erlebnis, dass niemanden unbeeindruckt zurücklassen wird. Ein perfekt ausgearbeitetes Kunstwerk, dass mit allerlei Facetten daherkommt. Göttlichen Melodien gepaart mit einer Spur Wahnsinn und einer teils erschreckenden Brutalität schlagen sich hier nieder. Eine verdammt intensive Erfahrung voller Dramaturgie, die eine ungewöhnliche Faszination ausübt und dazu führt, dass man sich aufgrund der vielen Eindrücke und genialen Ideen das Album wieder und wieder anhört, um in die Welt von ZORNHEYM abzutauchen. Verstörend genial! (Review)

Melodic Death Metal

ORBIT CULTURE

haben zwar mit „Shaman“ nur eine EP veröffentlicht. Allerdings geschah dies bereits ein Jahr nach ihrem letzten Kracheralbum „Nija“. Man hat das Gefühl, dass ORBIT CULTURE (Facebook) gar kein durchschnittliches gutes Album machen können. Die Outputs der Band sind immer eine Klasse für sich. Dies trifft auch auf „Shaman“ zu. ORBIT CULTURE bieten nach wie vor monumentalen brachialen Melodic-Death-Metal, der in seiner Art einzigartig ist.  Der Sound ist wie gehabt kompromisslos hart. Von monstermäßigen Drums und krassem Bass, über die überragenden Riffs bis hin zu dem geilen Gesang sind ORBIT CULTURE unvergleichlich. Das gesamte auditive Gesamtkonzept bieten ein fantastisches Hörerlebnis. Das ist nicht einfach nur stumpfe Power ohne Sinn und Verstand, sondern eine geschickte soundtechnische Kriegsführung, die keinen Widerstand duldet und Euer Herz im Sturm erobert. EX DEO

haben mit “ The Thirteen Years Of Nero“ ein mächtig imposantes Album hervorgebracht. Die fette druckvolle Produktion ist für den EX DEO-Sound wie geschaffen und steigert den ohnehin schon kolossalen Charakter der Songs zu einem brutalen Erdbeben. Die Atmosphäre ist noch dichter geworden und die Abwechslung bzw. der Mut im Songwriting ist deutlich spürbar, könnte meiner Meinung nach aber noch ein wenig mutiger und ausgefallener ( wie z.B. im ersten Song „The Fall Of Claudius“) ausfallen. Die imposanten Songkohorten des Albums kämpfen sich unerschrocken in die Oberliga des Melodic-Death-Metal. So viel ist sicher! Eine imponierende Geschichtsstunde von EX DEO (Facebook), die man so schnell nicht vergessen wird und bleienden Eindruck hinterlässt. HIRAES

sind zwar noch eine junge Band, aber die Mitglieder sind schon gute alte Bekannte. Wer auf geilen melodischen Death Metal steht, dem wird die Band DAWN Of DISEASE ein Begriff sein. Leider haben sie sich aufgelöst. Doch wo ein Ende ist, ist auch meistens immer ein Neuanfang. Und dieser Neuanfang heißt HIRAES (Facebook). Akustisch gibt es ordentlich etwas vor den Latz geknallt. Britta Goertz brüllt mit finsteren Growls standesgemäß energisch drauflos. Dabei gelingt die Balance zwischen brutalen schmetternden und melodischen Parts sehr gut. Alles andere entspricht ebenfalls hohen Standards, so dass die Zeichen sehr gut für eine erfolgreiche Zukunft stehen. Mit dem feurigen Video zur ersten Singleauskopplung „Under Fire“ hat man jedenfalls nicht nur soundtechnisch alles in Flammen gesetzt. (Review)

ACT OF DENIAL mit „Negative“

ACT OF DENIAL (Facebook) sind als sogenannte Supergroup gestartet, und zwar mit folgendem Line-Up: Sänger Björn Strid (Soilwork), Gitarristen Luger (Koziak, Benighted-Cro) und Voi Cox (Koziak, Victim), Bassist Steve Di Giorgio (Death, Testament), Drummer Kerim “Krimh” Lechner (Septicflesh) and Keyboarder John Lönnmyr (The Night Flight Orchestra).

Luger (Interview) und Voi Cox haben das Projekt ins Leben gerufen. Mittlerweile wurden die sehr bekannten Gastmusiker gegen ein stabiles Line-Up ausgetauscht, um auch zukünftig live spielen zu können. Denn man kann sich denken, dass die namenhafte Erstbesetzung mit ihren eigenen Bands genug zu tun hat.

Ein Album der Superlativen! Um es mit einem kleine Wortspiel zu beschreiben: Ein Act Of Genial! Anders kann ich es nicht bezeichnen. Es gibt hier überhaupt rein gar nichts zu meckern. Von vorne bis hinten ein Killeralbum! Wer da ein Haar in der Suppe findet, der leidet wahrscheinlich an Haarausfall. An den Songs kann es jedenfalls nicht liegen. Das ist High-End-Metal, den man meiner Meinung nach nicht besser machen kann. Das ist pures explosives Dynamit, welches Eure Metalsynapsen in einem Feuerwerk hochgehen lässt. Ein Megabrett und absolute Extraklasse! (Review)

brauche ich wohl niemandem mehr vorzustellen. Ihr Sound ist eine Mischung aus Death Metal und Black Metal. Sie widmen sich durchweg der Kriegsthematik und das in einer ernsten Art und Weise, die nichts zu beschönigen hat. Es sind zum Teil originale Überlieferungen von Soldaten, die diesen Krieg am eigenen Leib erfahren haben und die Grundlage der Songtexte bilden. 1914 setzen ihre ganz eigene Art der Geschichtsaufarbeitung mit „Where Fear And Weapons Meet“ erschreckend eindrucksvoll fort. Sie verfeinern bzw. intensivieren ihren Sound diesmal mit orchestralen Elementen, die in der richtigen Dosierung dem musikalischen Donnerwetter eine noch größere Dimension verleihen. Der Sound von 1914 ist wie der Krieg! Schonungslos und unerbittlich! (Review)

Kanonenfieber

als Ein-Mann-Projekt hatte dieses Jahr meine Aufmerksamkeit erregt, als BandCamp mir irgendwann diese Platte vorgeschlagen hatte. Das Cover von „Menschenmühle“ war schon ziemlich heftig und ich war mir nicht sicher, was mich erwarten würde. Aber was dann folgte, hatte mich echt geplättet. BLACK METAL vom allergemeinsten, und das in deutscher Sprache. Das hört man nicht alle Tage! KANONENFIEBER (Facbook) behandelt die gleiche Thematik wie 1914 und bringt musikalisch schonungslos die Schrecken des Krieges zum Ausdruck. Der Sound ist passenderweise rabiat und roh mit gnadenloser Aggressivität, verzichtet aber nicht auf gefällige Melodien.

Das Songwriting ist sehr gut gelungen. Es wird auch kein musikalischer Einheitsbrei serviert, sondern mit charakteristischen Songs eine tiefe Atmosphäre gestrickt. Dabei empfinde ich es als sehr positiv, dass man auf Anhieb viel von den Texten verstehen kann, auch wenn hier cleane Vocals nichts verloren haben. Ich kann dieses Album wärmstens jedem Black Metal Fan ans Herz legen. Ein erschreckend intensives Monsteralbum.

WINDFAERER

stammen aus Amerika. Witzigerweise wurde mir das Album „Breaths of Elder Dawns“ ebenfalls über BandCamp ans Herz gelegt. Und wieder war es eine sehr gute Empfehlung. WINDFAERER (Facebook) mischen Black Metal mit Folk-Elementen, die hier mittels einer Violine eingespielt werden. Ich habe eine Schwäche für dieses Instrument, weil es eines der Instrumente ist, die am meisten Atmosphäre erzeugen können. Tatsächlich habe ich es schon in vielen Metal-Genres gehört, aber Black Metal gehörte nicht dazu. Und auch das funktioniert! Im Falle von WINDFAERER sogar verdammt eindrucksvoll. Hier wird die Violine teilweise wie eine Gitarre eingesetzt.

Der Sound ist monumental und WINDFAERER zaubern teilweise epische Passagen hervor, die mich völlig in ihren Bann ziehen. So einen Sound habe ich noch nie gehört. Jeder muss sich dieses Album anhören, wenn er mal etwas anderen Black Metal hören möchte. Es ist eine atemberaubende Vorstellung, die WINDFAERER abliefern. Das Album hat sich quasi im letzten Moment für meine Bestenliste qualifiziert, obwohl das Album schon etwas länger auf dem Markt ist. Aber ich bin erst gestern darüber gestolpert und ich war auf Anhieb so davon überzeugt, dass ich es hier erwähnen muss. Und es hätte genauso an der Spitze stehen können. Doch letztlich ist es eine Band geworden aus dem kalten Norden.

NIGHT CROWNED mit „Hädanfärd“

NIGHTCROWNED habe mich schlichtweg umgehauen. Hier wird Black Metal mit einer vernichtenden Energie entfesselt. Diesem Sturm kann man nicht standhalten. Es ist ein eiskaltes Höllenfest mit 9 bitterschwarzen Songs. „Hädanfard“ ist moderner rifflastiger Black Metal der Sonderklasse! Ein imponierende schwarze epische Machtdemonstration! NIGHT CROWNED gehen mit unbändiger Energie zu Werke und schlagen mit aller dunkler Gewalt zu. Dabei gelingt es ihnen eine hervorragende Balance zwischen brutalen wilden Ausbrüchen und melodischen Anteilen zu erschaffen und so gelingt es Ihnen der Dunkelheit ein facettenreiches Dasein aufzuerlegen. Grundsätzlich bleibt aber der wilde durchschlagende Charakter erhalten und eben genau das ist die hohe Kunst des Ganzen. (Review)

VIKING METAL

THYRFING

Die finsteren Gesellen von THYRFING (Facebook ) aus dem nordischen Schweden haben sich ganze acht Jahre Zeit gelassen und treten nun mit ihrem neuen Longplayer „Vanagandr“ (VÖ 27.08.2021) an, um sich endlich nach dieser langen Zeit der Abstinenz mit einem Paukenschlag wieder Gehör zu verschaffen. Wir erleben hier Metal, der unheimlich wuchtig und monumental aufschlägt. Sänger Jens Rydén schreddert sich als dunkler Lord in seiner Landessprache durch die Songs und im Chorus wird mehrstimmig geschmettert.  Finstere epische Landschaften tun sich auf. Insgessamt bewegen sich die Songs meist im Midtempo-Bereich, brechen hier und da aber auch mal mit Blastbeat-Attacken aus diesem Korsett aus. Im gewaltigen Sound mischen sich symphonische Elemente ein. Hier spielen Streicher meistens die Hauptrolle. (Review / Interview )

EINHERJER mit „North Star“

EINHERJER ( Facebook ) lassen die Götter und auch `metal-heads.de´ mit ihrem neuen Album „North Star“ wieder einmal aufhorchen und bieten einen Anlass in Valhalla mal wieder richtig die Sau rauszulassen. Das Album ist im Februar erschienen und konnte sich bis zum Ende den Spitzenplatz sichern. Was mich vor allem an dem Album begeistert, ist der ungemeine Spielwitz und die Spielfreude der Band, die einem bei jedem Song entgegenschlägt. Man nehme z.B. den Song „West Coast Groove“. Der Titel impliziert es schon. Der Song hat wirklich einen giftigen Groove, der einen einfach mitnimmt und Laune macht. Dafür gibt es mit beispielsweise mit „The Blood & The Iron“ eine durchschlagende Schlachthymne par excellence geliefert. Das ist VIKING-Metal wie er leibt und lebt! (Review / Interview )

Extreme Metal

Of course, some directions of metal are already quite extreme. And yet there are bands that can not be assigned to one of the subgenres. These bands combine several extreme styles in their sound, so that these bands can only be classified under the term Extreme Metal.

XAEL

from the U.S.A. are extreme in every respect. XAEL(Facebook) have created their own universe for their music. It is about the eternal struggle of dynasties, human and divine. Thereby the music is hard stuff and not easy to digest. This is also shown by their album „Bloodtide Rising“, which embodies a destructive aria that resembles the force of nature of a heavy storm. It rolls over you like a hurricane, takes you apart and leaves you in pieces. Praise and recognition for the performance of drummer Joshua Nassaru Ward. Chords and rhythms are constantly changing their personalities and building up to a progressive monster. XAEL can not only make the darkest and most brutal fantasies come true. No, they shine in between with a flair for melodies.

GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS

are more harmonic and melodic on their album „3.6.2.4. It is a mixture of Melodic Death and Black Metal with symphonic interludes. However, the vocals are presented here more often in cleaner melodic form. GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS (Facebook) smash the trident with all their might into the earth and let the world tremble, like a mighty seaquake. „3.6.2.4“ is a powerful colossal album that is guaranteed to impress you. There are no failures on the album, only monster tracks. One is literally overwhelmed by the mighty soundscape. GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS create deep soundscapes like a pompous cinema blockbuster. Everything seems well thought out, varied and yet homogeneous. It is an interesting mixture, with which GHOSTS OF ATLANTIS have found their own niche with the sound of their debut album, in my opinion. (Review)

ZORNHEYM with „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“

ZORNHEYM (Facebook) are very versatile. The sound is a real grab bag of hard arts and also uses symphonic elements. But everything fits the musical theme of the band and the history and content of the albums. If you want to know more about it, feel free to read the interview with Zorn (Interview „Faszination Of Evil“). Because the overall concept comes from a story about an asylum called „Zornheim“ and its crazy inmates. For the first album „Where Hatred Dwells and Darkness Reigns“ there was even a comic for the story. Now follows with „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ the second part of the story.

ZORNHEYM offer with „The Zornheim Sleep Experiment“ an extreme cinematic experience that will leave no one unimpressed. A perfectly elaborated work of art that comes along with all kinds of Metal facets. Divine melodies paired with a hint of madness and a partly terrifying brutality strike here. A damn intense experience full of dramaturgy, which exerts an unusual fascination and leads to the fact that one listens to the album again and again due to the many impressions and ingenious ideas to dive into the world of ZORNHEYM. Stunningly ingenious! (Review)

Melodic Death Metal

ORBIT CULTURE

have released the EP „Shaman“. However, this happened already one year after their last smash album „Nija“. I have the feeling that ORBIT CULTURE (Facebook) cannot make an average good album at all. The outputs of the band are always in a class of their own. This is also true for „Shaman“. ORBIT CULTURE still offer monumental brute melodic death metal, which is unique in its kind.  The sound is as usual uncompromisingly hard. From monster drums and killer bass, to the outstanding riffs and awesome vocals, ORBIT CULTURE are incomparable. The entire overall auditory concept provide a fantastic listening experience. This is not just dull power without sense or reason, but a skillful sound warfare that will not tolerate any resistance and will take your heart by storm (Review / Interview mit Frontmann Niklas)

EX DEO

have produced a mighty impressive album with “ The Thirteen Years Of Nero“. This fat powerful production fits perfectly to the EX DEO sound and increases the already colossal character of the songs to a brutal earthquake. The atmosphere has become even denser and the variety or courage in the songwriting is clearly noticeable, but in my opinion could still be a little bolder and more unusual ( such as in the first song „The Fall Of Claudius“). The imposing song cohorts of the album fight their way fearlessly into the upper league of Melodic Death Metal. That much is for sure! An impressive history lesson from EX DEO (Facebook), which will not be forgotten so quickly and leaves a lasting impression. HIRAES

are still a young band, but the members are already good old mates. If you like Melodic Death Metal, you will know the band DAWN OF DISEASE. Unfortunately they broke up. But where there is an end, there is always a new beginning. And this new beginning is called HIRAES(Facebook) and their new album „Solitary“. Acoustically you get a nice balance between brutal blaring and melodic parts. That succeeds very well. Britta Goertz roars with sinister growls as befits her status energetically on it. Everything else also meets high standards, so that the signs are very good for a successful future. With the hellish video for the first single release „Under Fire“, the band has set everything on fire, not only in terms of sound.(Review)

ACT OF DENIAL with „Negative“

ACT OF DENIAL (Facebook)started as a so-called supergroup with the following line-up: vocalist Björn Strid (Soilwork), guitarists Luger (Koziak, Benighted-Cro) and Voi Cox (Koziak, Victim), bassist Steve Di Giorgio (Death, Testament), drummer Kerim „Krimh“ Lechner (Septicflesh) and keyboardist John Lönnmyr (The Night Flight Orchestra).

Luger (Interview) and Voi Cox brought the project to life. In the meantime, the very well-known guest musicians have been exchanged for a stable line-up in order to be able to play live in the future. Because you can imagine that the first named line-up has enough to do with their own bands.

An album of superlatives! To describe it with a little play on words: An Act Of Genius! I can’t describe it any other way. There is absolutely nothing to complain about. From front to back a killer album! This is high-end Metal that, in my opinion, can’t be done any better. This is pure explosive dynamite, which will blow up your Metal synapses in a firework. ACT OF DENIAL nailed it! (Review)

Black Metal

1914

I probably don’t need to introduce to anyone anymore. Their sound is a mixture of death metal and black metal. They devote themselves throughout to the war theme and that in a serious way, which has nothing to gloss over. Some of the songs are original lore from soldiers who experienced this war first hand and form the basis of the song lyrics. 1914 continue their very own way of dealing with history with „Where Fear And Weapons Meet“ in a frighteningly impressive way. They refine or rather intensify their sound this time with orchestral elements, which in the right dosage give the musical thunderstorm an even greater dimension. The sound of 1914 is like war! Relentless and unrelenting! (Review)

Kanonenfieber

as a one-man project had caught my attention this year when BandCamp suggested this record to me at some point. The cover of „Menschenmühle“ was strange and I wasn’t sure what to expect. But what followed really flattered me. BLACK METAL at its best, and in German language. You don’t hear that every day! KANONENFIEBER (Facebook) deals with the same subject matter as 1914 and musically relentlessly expresses the horrors of war. The sound is fittingly raucous and raw with merciless aggression, but does not forgo pleasing melodies.

The songwriting is very well done. There is also no musical mishmash served, but with characteristic songs knitted a deep atmosphere. I find it very positive that you can understand a lot of the lyrics right away, even if clean vocals have lost nothing here. I can warmly recommend this album to every black metal fan. A frighteningly intense monster album.

WINDFAERER

come from America. Funnily enough, the album „Breaths of Elder Dawns“ was also recommended to me via BandCamp. And again it was a very good recommendation. WINDFAERER (Facebook) mix Black Metal with Folk elements, which are presented here by a violin. In fact, I have heard it in many metal genres, but black metal was not one of them. And this works as well! In the case of WINDFAERER even damn impressive. Here the violin is partly used like a guitar.

The sound is monumental and WINDFAERER conjure up partly epic passages that completely captivate me. I have never heard a sound like this before. Everyone must listen to this album if they want to hear something different Black Metal. It is a breathtaking performance that WINDFAERER deliver. The album qualified for my top list at the last moment, so to speak, even though the album has been out for a bit longer. But I just stumbled upon it a few days ago and I was so convinced of it right away that I have to mention it here. And it could just as easily have been at the top. But in the end the top place is for a band from the cold north.

NIGHT CROWNED with „Hädanfärd“

NIGHTCROWNED simply blew me away. Here Black Metal is unleashed with a devastating energy. This storm is impossible to withstand. It’s an ice cold hellfest with 9 bitter black songs. „Hädanfard“ is modern riff-heavy Black Metal in a class of its own! An imposing black epic demonstration of power! NIGHT CROWNED go to work with irrepressible energy and strike with all dark violence. They manage to create an excellent balance between brutal wild outbursts and melodic parts and thus succeed in imposing a multifaceted existence on the darkness. Basically, however, the wild resounding character remains and exactly that is the speciality of „Hädanfärd“. (Review)

VIKING METAL

THYRFING

The sinister fellows of THYRFING (Facebook ) from the Nordic Sweden have taken a whole eight years and now enter with their new output „Vanagandr“ to finally make themselves heard again with a bang after this long period of abstinence. We experience here Metal that strikes incredibly massive and monumental. Singer Jens Rydén shreds as a dark lord in his native language through the songs. Dark epic landscapes open up. Overall, the songs are mostly in the midtempo range, but break out of this corset here and there with blastbeat attacks. In the massive sound symphonic elements mix in. Strings mostly play the main role here. (Review / Interview).

EINHERJER with „North Star“

It’s time for merciless battles again. EINHERJER ( Facebook ) released „North Star“ in February and could secure the top position until the end. What I love most about the album is the band’s immense playfulness, which comes across in every song. Take the song „West Coast Groove“ for example. The title already implies it. The song really has a toxic groove that simply takes you along and makes mood. For example, „The Blood & The Iron“ is a resounding battle hymn par excellence. This is VIKING metal as it lives and breathes! (Review / Interview )

Bei „METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Teil 2“ werden die Töne um einiges härter. Es stehen die Kategorien Thrash Metal, Doom Metal, Metalcore und Progressive Metal auf dem Programm. Viel Spaß!

Thrash Metal

Aus der Sparte gab es dieses Jahr mächtig viel um die Ohren geknallt. Da wir bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ ohnehin schon versucht haben die besten Alben rauszupicken, war die Auswahl hier besonders schwierig.

NECRONOMICON

sind ein alte Institution im deutschen Metal-Business. „The Final Chapter“ ist ein Album nach Maß und schließt sich erbarmungslos an das Vorgängeralbum „Unleashed Bastards“ an und setzt dem sogar noch eins drauf. Schon beim letzten Album waren starke ausdauernde Nackenmuskeln gefragt, wenn der furiose NECRONOMICON-Sound über Euch hinwegfegt. NECRONOMICON (Facebook) entfesseln mit „The Final Chapter“ ein dämonisches Höllenfest. Ähnlich höllisch geht es bei der nächsten Band zur Sache. (Review / Interview mit Freddy)

EVILE

aus England gehen die Sache etwas klassischer an, aber nicht weniger angriffslustig. Der Sound erinnert mich umgehend an die alten Zeiten des traditionellen puren Thrash-Metal. EVILE (Facebook) entfesseln mit barbarischer Vehemenz das Thrash-Metal-Ungeheuer. EVILE haben das Album mit Ideen versehen, so dass es trotz des grundlegend zerstörerischen Konzepts nicht nur monoton dahingeprügelt wird. Ben Carter zerlegt wie Chuck Norris auf Koks in einem wahren Rausch seine Schießbude. Auffällig ist, dass er mitunter die HiHats bzw. Becken dominanter bzw. häufiger einsetzt und so für besondere Akzente sorgt. Dazu werden schonungslose Riffs geschmettert und einen Haufen verdammt geiler Solos gewirbelt, wo sich OL den Arsch abshreddert. EVILE entfesseln tatsächlich die Hölle. „Hell Unleashed“ lässt dem Wahnsinn freien Lauf und pulverisiert in einem Anfall kreativer aggressiver Tobsucht mit klassischem Thrash-Metal alles auf seinem Weg. BONDED

kommen aus dem Ruhrpott, und zwar aus Dortmund. Direkt in meiner Nachbarschaft prügeln BONDED(Facebook) brutalen Thrash-Metal  was das Zeug hält. Aber der Sound ist finsterer als bei EVILE. Doch er wird Euch genauso roh und blutig in die Fresse geschmettert. Freunde guter alter Thrash-Kultur werden auch hier ihre helle Freude haben. Die Songs von BONDED sind mit Wut im Bauch geschrieben und gehen mit ihrer Kritik schonungslos und unmißverständlich zur Sache. Die Ruhrpottschmiede wurde intensiv unter Feuer gesetzt, reiner harter Stahl zum glühen gebracht und auf dem Amboss die Waffe „Into Blackness“ geschmiedet. Die ist brutal scharf und schlägt gnadenlos zu. BONDED metzeln sich mit hammermäßigen 11 Songs unbarmherzig durch die Gehörgänge. (Review)

FLOTSAM & JETSAM mit „Blood In The Water“

Die Haudegen von der Kultband FLOTSAM & JETSAM (Facebook) enttäuschen fast nie. Man hat viel mehr das Gefühl, dass sie es noch mal richtig wissen wollen. „Blood In The Water“ ist technisch und vom Songwriting her das ultimative Hörerlebnis. FLOTSAM & JETSAM schleudern den Thrash Metal in die Moderne ohne dabei an Vehemenz und Energie zu verlieren. Abgesehen davon liebe ich diese geile Stimme von Eric A. Knutson, der für mich unbestritten zu den Besten zählt. Mit „Blood In The Water“ übertreffen FLOTSAM AND JETSAM sich selbst und erschaffen sich ein Denkmal. Dabei setzen FLOTSAM AND JETSAM nicht nur auf hemmungsloses Thrashing, sondern paaren die Songs mit traumhaften melodischen Akkorden und Gesangslinien, die sich mit druckvoller Power wie heiß glühendes geschmolzenes Metall um die Gehörwindungen legen und sich dauerhaft im Gehirn festsetzen. DOOM METAL

MARIANAS REST

aus Finnland heben mit ihrem Werk „Fata Morgana“ ein wahres DEATH-DOOM-Highlight aus der schwarzen See. Mal bricht sie tonnenschwer über Euch herein, um Euch in anderen Momenten mit einer federleichten Hülle zu umgarnen. Sie spinnt ihre Fäden geschickt und so faszinierend, dass man schnell in die Welt von MARIANAS REST (Facebook) eingewoben wird. Ein fesselndes Zusammenspiel von betörenden schwerelosen Melodien und brachialen zermalmenden Ausbrüchen. Eine faszinierende Aura umgibt die Songs. Von monumental bis minimalistisch, von brachial bis fragil, von vehement bis melodisch ist einfach alles vertreten. Lasst diese bittersüße Köstlichkeit im auditiven Genuss zergehen und nehmt sie mit all Euren Sinnen auf! (Review / Interview)

SWALLOW THE SUN mit „Killing Moons“

In einen emotionalen Abgrund ziehen uns SWALLOW THE SUN (Facebook) mit ihrem neuen Album „Killing Moons“, welches schwerer verdaulich als das letzte Album geworden ist und manchen den Zugang vielleicht erschweren wird. Aber dieses Album ist nichts desto trotz ein Meisterwerk. Mit „Moonflowers“ haben sich SWALLOW THE SUN selbst übertroffen und das atmosphärisch dichteste und packendste Werk ihrer Karriere erschaffen. Aber seid gewarnt: Es macht süchtig! Und wie Raivio selbst sagte: 

„Ein Album muss berühren, Emotionen erschaffen!“

Und genau das tut das Album! Das Album trägt eine schwere emotionale Last und wirkt trotz seiner Traurigkeit wie eine Reinigung des Geistes. Das sind natürlich nur meine bescheidenen Empfindungen bei diesem Album. Jeder muss seine eigene Reise mit diesem Album machen und dabei Eindrücke und Empfindungen auf sich wirken lassen. Aber ich kann Euch versprechen, dass es eine bewegende und unvergessliche Reise werden wird. Diese Symbiose der melodischen zarten Verzweiflung und Verletzlichkeit mit der gnadenlosen finsteren Härte emotionaler Ausbrüche ist ergreifend und faszinierend. (Review)

Metalcore

ARCHITECTS

geben sich auf dem neuen Album wechselseitiger als auf dem Vorgänger. „Holy Hell“ war von rabiater Wut und Aggressivität geprägt. „For Those That Wish To Exist“ besitzt mehr ruhige und viele melodische Phasen, die jedoch bereits auch auf „Holy Hell“ zu hören waren, wie z.B. das Streicherensemble und die melodiösen Gesangslinien. Wer also ein puristischer Metalcore-Fan des Vorgängeralbums ist, wird allerdings vielleicht nicht so großen Gefallen daran finden, den hier bewegt sich der Sound auch mal abseits des Metalcore. Auf die brachialen Ausbrüche im Sound und im Gesang, die dem Hörer entgegengeschmettert werden, muss aber nicht verzichtet werden und kommen zu genüge vor. ARCHITECTS (Facebook) leben ihr Faible für Melodien mit „For Whose That Wish To Exist“ weiter aus. 

Was man ARCHITECTS zu Gute halten muss, ist der Umstand, dass sie nicht versucht haben, den sicheren Weg zu gehen und das Vorgängeralbum in seiner Art zu kopieren. Man hat Dinge daraus aufgegriffen, sich weiterentwickelt ohne seinen Wurzeln zu vergessen. Das ist eine Gratwanderung, die schwer zu meistern ist. Ich persönlich bin der Meinung, dass ARCHITECTS dies famos hinbekommen haben. Ein beachtlicher Balanceakt zwischen Vehemenz und Emotionen, dass manchmal aus dem Metalcore-Korsett ausbricht. (Review)

IMMINENCE mit „Heaven In Hiding“

Die Schweden haben das wahr gemacht, was sie mit ihrer ersten Singleauskopplung „Temptation“ versprochen hatten. Ein unglaublicher Song, der mit zu den Besten zählt, was ich dieses Jahr hören durfte. „Temptation“ ist ein knallharter Monstersong, der die bisherigen Soundstandards von IMMINENCE mit einem neuen Härtegrad pulverisiert. IMMINENCE (Facebook) haben mit „Heaven In Hiding“ ein sehr ausgereiftes Album erschaffen, dass konzeptionell sehr gut umgesetzt wurde. Ihr Sound hat etwas ganz eigenes. Dies liegt unter anderem daran, dass Sänger Eddie Berg neben den Vocals den Sound noch mit seiner Violine bereichert. Es ist ein rundum stimmiges Album, das auf viele Arten ein ergreifendes emotionales Erlebnis darstellt. Damit wird es dem Hörer auf beeindruckende Weise nachhaltig im Gedächtnis bleiben. (Review)

EYES WIDE OPEN

stellen mit ihrem neuen Album „Through Life And Death“ erneut unter Beweis, dass sie zur Oberliga des Modern Metal zählen. Nicht nur Prügelei, sondern auch Musik mit einem Gefühl für packende Melodien haben sich EYES WIDE OPEN auf die Fahnen geschrieben. EYES WIDE OPEN (Facebook) beherrschen diese Kombination einwandfrei, um sich in die Herzen der Fans zu spielen. Der Song „Devastation“ hat mich dabei besonders beeindruckt. Der Song ist ein Killer und beeindruckt neben der brutalen Dynamik mit fantastischen Hooks und einem kraftvollen Chorus. (Review)

TRIVIUM mit „In The Court Of The Dragon“

TRIVIUM legen sich nicht auf die faule Haut. Es ist noch gar nicht so lange her, dass TRIVIUM (Facebook) das Album „What The Dead Men Say“ herausgebracht haben. Das war nämlich am 24.04.2020. Unglaublich, dass sie jetzt schon wieder das neue Album „In The Court Of The Dragon“ rausgeprügelt haben. . Hemmungslose Angriffe mit einem ausgeklügeltem Konzept werden Euch immer wieder eindrucksvoll um die Ohren geballert. Hier wird alles andere als stumpf drauflosgedroschen, sondern auf höchstem Niveau unterhalten. TRIVIUM beherrschen die Mischung aus gnadenloser brutaler Jagd in Verbindung mit vortrefflicher Melodik und epischen Refrains wie gewohnt perfekt. Progressive Metal

ACOLYTE

stammen aus Australien. ACOLYTE (Facebook) haben einen außergewöhnlichen Sound für sich geschaffen. Dies liegt nicht nur an ihrem fantastischen Keyborder David Van Pelt, der aus seinen Keybords wahnsinnig geile Sounds zaubert. Zusammen mit allen anderen in der Band gelingt es verschiedene kunstvolle Arrangements und extravagante Klangwelten zu formen, die sich angenehm vom Standard abheben. Hierbei ensteht eine Welt voller Emotionen, die von Verlust, Trauer und Depression geprägt ist, aber auch von Hoffnung und Kampfeswillen. Insofern spiegeln die konzeptionellen Songs das Gefühlslabyrinth einer Person wieder, die mit einem tragischen Verlust leben und umgehen muss. Es ist ein emotionales Kaleidoskop und eine Art musikalisches Ballett. Die Musik ist anmutig und emotional ausdrucksstark. Wie beim Ballett erfordert dies viel Gefühl, aber auch Kraft und Koordination. Es ist eine spannende Verbindung von klassischer und moderner Interpretation des Progressive-Metal. (Review)

LOCH VOSTOK

aus Schweden machen es den Schubladendenkern nicht leicht, denn was LOCH VOSTOK (Facebook) in ihrer musikalischen Vielfalt darstellen ist nämlich eine ganze Menge und so könnte neben der o.g. Kategorisierung auch die Bezeichnung Avantgarde- bzw. Experimental-Metal ganz gut zutreffen. „The Great Escape“ ist ein Wahnsinnsalbum! LOCH VOSTOK zeigen sehr eindrucksvoll, wie man Elemente zu einem Ganzen verbindet, die eigentlich unvereinbar scheinen. Sie haben eine höchst spannende musikalische Geschichte geschrieben, wobei die Schreibfeder mit viel Raffinesse und künstlerischem Geschick geführt wurde. Es ist nicht immer der leichte Weg, den LOCH VOSTOK gehen, wenn sie zwischen den Extremen hin und herspringen. Doch genau dies macht auch den Reiz des Albums aus. Außerdem muss ich Jonas Radehorn, der als Sänger neu eingestiegen ist, mal wirklich ein großes Lob aussprechen. Der macht einen hervorragenden Job! (Review)

WITHERFALL mit „Curse Of Autumn“

WITHERFALL (Facebook) sind für mich einfach das Maß aller Dinge, was energiegeladenen Progressive Metal angeht. Wie man an den beiden vorherigen Alben erkennen kann, hat der Progressive Metal die vielseitigsten Erscheinungsformen. WITHERFALL spielen dunkel angehauchten melodischen Metal mit ausgefeiltem und progressivem Songwriting. Die Progressivität ergibt sich nicht nur aus den teils überlangen komplexen Songs, sondern auch dadurch, dass sich WITHERFALL insgesamt eine schöne Bandbreite des Metals bieten. Das reicht von Melodic-Metal über Thrash-Metal bis hin zu eingängigem klassischen Heavy-Metal. Dabei kommt es auch mal zu theatralischen Momenten. WITHERFALL zeigen sich ausgefeilter, pfiffiger und facettenreicher denn je. Dies trifft auch auf den Gesang von Joseph zu, der meiner Meinung nach auf diesem Album noch mehr von seiner mannigfaltigen Kunst darbietet. Der technische Level ist bei WITHERFALL ohnehin in allen Bereichen unglaublich hoch. Thrash Metal

This year there were a lot of albums from this category. Since we at ‚metal-heads.de‘ have already tried to pick out the best albums anyway, the selection here was particularly difficult.

NECRONOMICON

are an old institution in the German Metal business. „The Final Chapter“ is an album made to measure and mercilessly follows the previous album „Unleashed Bastards“ and even adds to it. Already with the last album strong enduring neck muscles were in demand, when the furious NECRONOMICON (Facebook) sound sweeps over you. NECRONOMICON (Facebook) unleash a demonic hellfest with „The Final Chapter“. (Review / Interview with Freddy) Let’s go a step further with…

EVILE

from England take a more classic approach, but no less aggressive. The sound immediately reminds me of the old days of traditional pure Thrash Metal. EVILE (Facebook) unleash the thrash metal monster with barbaric vehemence. EVILE have injected the album with ideas so that despite the fundamentally destructive concept, it doesn’t just thrash along monotonously. Ben Carter tears apart his shooting gallery in a true frenzy like an angry Chuck Norris .It is noticeable that he sometimes uses the hi-hats or cymbals more dominant or more often and thus provides special accents. In addition, relentless riffs are smashed and a bunch of damn horny solos whirled by Ol Drake. „Hell Unleashed“ lets the madness run wild and pulverizes everything in its path in a fit of creative aggressive frenzy with classic Thrash Metal. BONDED

come from Germany. Right in my neighborhood BONDED (Facebook) are beating brutal Thrash Metal. But the sound is more sinister than EVILE. They smash it just raw and bloody in your face. Friends of good old Thrash culture will have a lot of fun here. The songs of BONDED are written with rage in the heart and go with their criticism relentlessly and unmistakably to the point. The German forge was intensively put under fire. BONDED brings pure hard steel to glow and forged on the anvil the weapon „Into Blackness“, which is brutally sharp and strikes mercilessly. BONDED slaughter with 11 killer songs mercilessly through your ears. (Review)

FLOTSAM & JETSAM with „Blood In The Water“

The experienced men from the cult band FLOTSAM & JETSAM (Homepage, Facebook) almost never disappoint. It has more the appearance that they really want to know it again. „Blood In The Water“ is technically and in case of songwriting the ultimate listening experience. FLOTSAM & JETSAM hurl Thrash Metal into the modern age without losing any of its vehemence and energy. Apart from that I love this awesome voice of Eric A. Knutson, who for me is undisputedly one of the best. With „Blood In The Water“ FLOTSAM AND JETSAM surpass themselves and create a monument. FLOTSAM AND JETSAM not only rely on unrestrained thrashing, but pair the songs with dreamlike melodic chords and vocal lines that wrap themselves around the auditory coils like hot glowing molten metal with punchy power and get permanently stuck in the brain. DOOM METAL

MARIANAS REST

from Finland lift a true DEATH DOOM highlight out of the black sea with their work „Fata Morgana“. Sometimes it breaks over you with tons of weight, to ensnare you in other moments with a feather-light cover. The music spins her threads skillfully and so fascinatingly that you are quickly woven into the world of MARIANAS REST(Facebook). A captivating interplay of beguiling weightless melodies and brute crushing outbursts. Thereby a fascinating aura surrounds the songs. From monumental to minimalist, from brute to fragile, from vehement to melodic, simply everything is represented. Let this bittersweet delicacy melt in auditory pleasure and take it in with all your senses! SWALLOW THE SUN mit „Killing Moons“

SWALLOW THE SUN  (Facebook) pull us into an emotional abyss with their new album „Killing Moons“, which has become more difficult to digest than the last album and may make access difficult for some. But this album is nevertheless a masterpiece. With „Moonflowers“ SWALLOW THE SUN have outdone themselves and created the most atmospherically dense and gripping work of their career. But be warned: It is addictive! And as Raivio himself said:

„An album must touch, create emotions.“

And that’s exactly what the album does! The album carries a heavy emotional load and, despite its sadness, acts as a cleansing of the mind. Of course, these are just my humble feelings about this album. Everyone has to make their own journey with this album, letting impressions and sensations sink in. But I can promise you that it will be a moving and unforgettable journey. This symbiosis of melodic tender despair and vulnerability with the merciless sinister hardness of emotional outbursts is moving and fascinating. (Review)

Metalcore

ARCHITECTS

give themselves more reciprocally on the new album than on the predecessor. „Holy Hell“ was characterized by rabid anger and aggressiveness. „For Those That Wish To Exist“ has more calm and many melodic phases, which, however, could already be heard on „Holy Hell“, such as the string ensemble and the melodic vocal lines. So if you are a purist metalcore fan of the previous album, you might not like it that much, though, because here the sound moves away from Metalcore sometimes. The brute outbreaks in the sound and in the vocals, which are blasted at the listener, must not be renounced. ARCHITECTS (Facebook) live out their penchant for melodies with „For Whose That Wish To Exist“. 

What you have to give ARCHITECTS credit for is the fact that they didn’t try to go the safe way and copy the previous album. They have taken things from it, developed further without forgetting its roots. This is a tightrope walk that is difficult to master. I personally think that ARCHITECTS have managed this brilliantly. A remarkable balancing act between vehemence and emotion that sometimes breaks out of the Metalcore corset. (Review)

IMMINENCE with „Heaven In Hiding“

The Swedes have made true what they promised with their first single „Temptation“. This incredible song is one of the best I’ve heard this year. „Temptation“ is a hard-hitting monster song that pulverizes IMMINENCE’s previous sound standards with a new level of heaviness. IMMINENCE (Facebook) have created a very mature album with „Heaven In Hiding“ that is conceptually very well executed. Their sound has something very unique. This is due, among other things, to the fact that singer Eddie Berg enriches the sound with his violin in addition to the vocals. It is an all-around coherent album that is a poignant emotional experience in many ways. Thus, it will remain in the listener’s memory in an impressive way. (Review)

Modern Metal

EYES WIDE OPEN

prove once again with their new album „Through Life And Death“ that they belong to the upper league of Modern Metal. Not only beating, but also music with a feeling for gripping melodies is the passion for EYES WIDE OPEN (Facebook). They master this combination perfectly to play themselves into the hearts of the fans. The song „Devastation“ has particularly impressed me. The song is a killer and impresses besides the brutal dynamics with fantastic hooks and a powerful chorus. (Review)

TRIVIUM mit „In The Court Of The Dragon“

TRIVIUM (Facebook) are more than hardworking. It’s not so long ago that TRIVIUM released the album „What The Dead Men Say“ in April last year. Unbelievable that they have beaten out now already again the new album „In The Court Of The Dragon“. Here unrestrained attacks with a sophisticated concept are always impressively banged around your ears. The songs are everything else than bluntly thrashed on, but entertained on the highest level. TRIVIUM master the mixture of merciless brutal hunt in connection with excellent melodic and epic choruses as usual in captivating form.

Progressive Metal

ACOLYTE

come from Australia. ACOLYTE (Facebook) have created an extraordinary unique sound. This is not only due to their fantastic keyboarder David Van Pelt, who conjures up insanely awesome sounds from his instruments. Together with all the others in the band they manage to form various artful arrangements and extravagant soundscapes that pleasantly stand out from the standard. The result is a world full of emotions, which is characterized by loss, sadness and depression, but also by hope and the will to fight. In this respect, the conceptual songs reflect the emotional labyrinth of a person who has to live and deal with a tragic loss. It is an emotional kaleidoscope and a kind of musical ballet. As with ballet, this requires a lot of feeling, but also strength and coordination. It is an exciting combination of classical and modern interpretation of Progressive Metal.

LOCH VOSTOK

from Sweden do not make it easy for the pigeonholers, because what LOCH VOSTOK (Facebook) represent in their musical diversity is quite a lot. „The Great Escape“ is an amazing album! LOCH VOSTOK show very impressively how to combine elements into a whole that actually seem incompatible. They have written a most exciting musical story, the pen being wielded with great finesse and artistic skill. It is not always the easy path that LOCH VOSTOK take when they jump back and forth between extremes. But this is exactly what makes the album so appealing. Also, I really have to give a big shout out to Jonas Radehorn, who joined as a new vocalist. He does an excellent job! (Review)

WITHERFALL with „Curse Of Autumn“

WITHERFALL (Facebook ) are for me simply the kings of energetic Progressive Metal. As you can see from the two previous albums, Progressive Metal has the most versatile manifestations. WITHERFALL play dark-tinged melodic Metal with sophisticated songwriting. The progressiveness comes not only from the sometimes overlong complex songs, but also from the fact that WITHERFALL offer themselves an impressive range of Metal overall. This ranges from melodic Metal to Thrash Metal to catchy classic Heavy Metal. Thereby it comes also sometimes to theatrical moments. WITHERFALL show themselves more polished, smart and multifaceted than ever. This also applies to the vocals of Joseph, who in my opinion presents even more of his manifold art on this album. The technical level of WITHERFALL is incredibly high in all areas anyway. Einfach krass!

Ich hatte es bereits bei meinem Jahresrückblick erwähnt. Trotz des COVID-19 Fluchs haben sich alle in der Musikbranche den Arsch aufgerissen. Bands, Fans und alle anderen haben ihren Beitrag geleistet, um sich durch diese Krise zu kämpfen. Es konnten sogar einige Konzerte stattfinden. Aber vor allem sind die Bands und Musiker sehr kreativ geworden und haben 2021 hochkarätige Alben veröffentlicht.

Man kann sich nicht der Illusion hingeben wirklich alle Veröffentlichungen eines Jahres zu berücksichtigen, denn bei der Masse ist das schier unmöglich. Dies gilt auch für einen gestandene und fleißige Redaktion von ‚metal-heads.de‘. Vor allem ist es dann der Fall, wenn man nicht nur die bekannten Acts auf dem Schirm hat, sondern auch die Underground Acts und Newcomer der Branche. Aber es sind gerade diese, die sich qualitativ hinter den Großen der Szene nicht verstecken müssen und oft für sehr positive Erlebnisse sorgen. So beginnt meiner persönliche Reise durch das Jahr 2021 mit „METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Teil 1“.

Eine erlesene Auswahl

Ich denke, dass wir bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ eine gute Auswahl getroffen haben und eine gute Bandbreite präsentieren konnten. Glücklicherweise gibt es auch noch andere Webzines, die unseren Leidenschaft teilen. Deshalb könnt Ihr Euch von allen Bestenlisten Eure persönlichen Highlights heraussuchen. Die Erstellung so einer Liste ist nicht nur aufgrund der Vielzahl von Veröffentlichungen ein schwieriges Unterfangen, sondern auch deswegen, weil die einzelnen Stilrichtungen nicht mehr so klar voneinander zu trennen sind wie es früher einmal der Fall war.

Zudem ist mein Musikgeschmack sehr breit gefächert, so dass sich bei mir eine lange Liste von Alben im Laufe des Jahres ansammelt. So kam es dieses Jahr dazu, dass ich persönlich ca. 90 Alben rezensiert habe, von denen ich Euch die Alben noch einmal nahe lege, die mich besonders nachhaltig begeistern konnten. Dasselbe werden meine Kollegen werden sicherlich auch noch tun und ihre persönlichen Highlights präsentieren, denn der Musikgeschmack ist so vielfältig wie die Musik selbst.

Auch die Alben, die hier nicht in der Liste erscheinen, sind in der Regel sehr hörenswert, da vorab schon eine Auswahl für die Alben getroffen wird, welche hier bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ vorgestellt werden. Wie es sich für ein Album des Jahres gehört, steht es direkt an der Spitze der Liste. Also lasse ich direkt die Katze aus dem Sack und beginne mit meinem Album des Jahres.

SIGNUM DRACONIS mit „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“

Es ist ein Debütalbum von solcher Qualität im Bereich des symphonischen Power-Metal, dass es auf Anhieb mein Album des Jahres geworden ist. Warum ist das so? Weil ich SIGNUM DRACONIS (Facebook) bewundere! Der Ursprung dieses ehrgeizigen Projekts „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ und die 11-jährige Entstehungsgeschichte sind von unglaublichen Ambitionen und einer fast unmenschlichen ehrgeizigen Ausdauer geprägt. Das Ergebnis ist atemberaubend. „The Divine Coemdy: Inferno“ ist ein wahrlich göttliches Album, was für mich in jeglicher Hinsicht bis ins kleinste Detail ausgearbeitet ist, so dass dem Hörer bei einer sagenhaften Spielzeit von 95 Minuten nicht langweilig wird. Wenn wir von Symphonic Metal sprechen, dann steht dieses Album mit jeder Faser dafür ein. Dafür sorgt nicht nur das Songwriting und die hervorragende Arbeit der Bandmitglieder, sondern auch die Zusammenarbeit mit einem kompletten Orchesterensemble (Symphonieorchester Bratislava) und fantastischen Gastmusikern wie beispielsweise Sängerin Chiara Manese, Ksenia Glonty.

SIGNUM DRACONIS haben mit „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ ein großartiges Monument erschaffen. Sie haben der anspruchsvollen Herausforderung getrotzt und überzeugen auf ganzer Linie mit ihrer Vertonung eines Klassikers der Weltliteratur. Dies ist ein erhabenes Kunstwerk, welches für mich auf jeden Fall einen Platz in der Reihe der besten Konzeptalben gefunden hat. Ein Album voller Spannung und Drama, dass mit kreativer Vielfalt und künstlerischem Geschick durchtränkt ist. Eine intensive tiefgreifende Reise, die Euch mit einer faszinierenden Atmosphäre begeistern wird. SIGNUM DRACONIS sind feinster italienischer symphonischer Power Metal! Ein göttliches Album!

Symphonic Metal

METALWINGS

aus Ungarn möchte ich nicht unerwähnt lassen, auch wenn der Preis dieses Jahr für das Album des Jahres im Bereich Symphonic Metal anderweitig vergeben wurde. Denn METALWINGS haben dieses Jahr ebenso das fantastisches Album „A Whole New Land“ veröffentlicht. Der Symphonic-Metal von METALWINGS kommt nicht auf einer monstermäßigen niederschmetternden Bombastwelle daher. Sie gehen etwas filigraner an die Kompositionen heran. Das heißt aber nicht, dass es hier an Energie fehlen würde. Denn die ist zweifelsohne ebenfalls vorhanden, aber eben gepaart mit verdammt viel Gefühl.

Diese Verweben der klassischen symphonischen Instrumente in den Songs ist überragend. Bis hin zu einem verdammt guten Gitarrensolos ist alles da, was das Herz begehrt. Ein prägendes Merkmal ist das Violinenspiel von Sängerin Stella. Es ist ein unendlich gefühlvolles Instrument, dass gerade aber auch in Verbindung mit dem Metal-Sound eine besondere Kraft verkörpern kann. Es ist in der Lage vielfältige Emotionen zu erzeugen. (Review / Interview mit Stella)

Power Metal

BLACK & DAMNED

Gleich zu Beginn machen die deutschen Power Metaller BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) von sich reden. Ich persönlich halte sie für eine aufstrebende deutsche Band, die mit ihrem Debütalbum „Heavenly Creatures“ auf Anhieb für eine Menge Aufsehen gesorgt haben. Mit einem sehr abwechslungsreichen Angebot ist „Heavenly Creatures“ eines der besten Power Metal Alben des Jahres 2021. Es hat zwar noch nicht für den Thron gereicht, aber es ist bemerkenswert, was für ein tolles Debütalbum die Männer in kurzer Zeit rausgehauen haben. Aus sicheren Quellen weiß ich, dass nächstes Jahr direkt das nächst Album folgen wird. Man darf mehr als gespannt sein, was uns erwarten wird. (Review / Interview)

RAGE

haben dieses Jahr schon wieder kurz nach ihrem starken letzten Album „Wings Of Rage“ (2020) das neue Album „Resurrection Day“ herausgebracht und man sollte nicht meinen, dass den Herren die Luft ausgeht. Das neue Album ist granatenstark. Das Ding hat Power und fetzt mehr als heftig durch die Ohren. Ist schon irre, was für einen kreativen hochwertigen Output RAGE (Facebook) bieten. Ähnlich wild geht es bei den Griechen

FIREFORCE

zu. Das Album „Rage Of War“ hat es mir direkt zu Beginn des Jahres ordentlich besorgt. Neuzugang Matt gefällt mir sehr gut, sowohl am Mikro als auch an der Gitarre. Mit seinen mitreißenden fetzigen Soli setzt er neue Akzente im insgesamt hochwertigen Sound von FIREFORCE (Facebook). Deshalb schießt sich der stählerne FIREFORCE-Panzer mit durchschlagenden Granaten auch in die Reihe der besten Power Metal Alben. BRAINSTORM mit „Wall Of Skulls“

BRAINSTORM (Facebook) haben für mich anno 2021 mit ihrem Album „Wall Of Skulls“ ein verdammt geiles Album, wenn nicht sogar eines der besten ihrer Karriere, produziert. Das Album hat alles, was ein Power-Metal-Album ausmacht und vom fantastischen Gesang des Frontmanns Andy gekrönt wird. Die Songs bieten eine ganze Palette von Songs, die von hochmelodisch bis angriffslustig alles bieten. Geniale Hymnen inklusive! Mein Redaktionskollege Uwe war ebenfalls von dem Album sehr angetan und war der Meinung, dass es eine perfekte Darbietung sei und man an dem Album nicht vorbeikommen könne.

Heavy Metal

WITCHBOUND

huldigen dem klassischen melodischen Heavy Metal und vermitteln das Thema in Reinkultur. Tolle Riffs und tolle Melodien. Dabei hat die Hexengilde den Pfeffersack stets in der Hinterhand und würzt damit so manchen Trank im Hexenkessel. Es sind liebevoll komponierte und interpretierte Songs, die eine Stunde lang eine lebendige wundervolle Geschichte erzählen. Dabei lassen sie eine gesunde Portion Power mit einfließen, so dass eine Vermischung von packendem Heavy Metal und knackigem Power-Metal entsteht. Es ist ein schönes vielseitiges Album geworden, mit dem WITCHBOUND (Facebook) den Spirit der alten Zeit vortrefflich einfängt und aufleben lässt. (Review)

NEKROMANT

aus Schweden haben mit dem Album „Temple Of Haal“ ein fesselndes Album erschaffen, dass Euch die Musik mit einer bemerkenswerten Atmosphäre spüren lassen. Mit seinen episch doomigen Ansätzen und den geschickt konstruierten Songs wird die Welt der alten Götter und Sagen von NEKROMANT (Facebook) wiederbelebt. Die elektrisierenden Solos und Riffs, begleitet von einem prägenden Bass und angefeuert von lebendigen Drums, verbinden sich mit dem Gesang und öffnen das Tor in eine andere Welt. DEE SNIDER

Mit stolz geschwellter Brust und von ganzem Rockerherzen smasht die Band um DEE SNIDER ein beachtenswertes mit Rock und Metal getränktes Glaubensbekenntnis heraus. Das Album besteht aus endgeilen herausragenden und sehr guten Tracks. Ne Nullnummer werdet Ihr nicht finden. Das Niveau ist durchweg verdammt hoch, auch wenn nicht jeder Song das Niveau der absoluten Burnersongs erreicht. So bleibt ein Album, dass auf jeden Fall zu den Besten gehört, was ich dieses Jahr bisher in diesem Bereich gehört habe (Review hier) Doch das Album musste sich dann doch noch geschlagen geben., und zwar von

MANIMAL mit „Armageddon“

„Armageddon“ ist das Heavy Metal Album des Jahres für mich. Warum? MANIMAL (Facebook) haben mit „Armageddon“ dem klassischen Heavy Metal ein Denkmal gesetzt. Das Album hat keine Schwächen und bietet einen Knaller nach dem anderen. Ein Album muss in erster Linie unterhalten! Und das tut dieses Album unbestritten! Die Männer brennen lichterloh und geben Vollgas! Neben den schon erwähnten messerscharfen Riffs gibt es haufenweise geile Gitarrensolos. Der schwere Bass klingt immer schön durch und zusammen mit dem wuchtigen Schlagzeug treiben sie als stark schlagendes Herz den Sound immer wieder voran. Sänger Samuel Nyman ist ein absolut geiler Höllensänger, der den Sound unter Feuer setzt. (Review hier)

Hardrock

Einer der klassischsten Genres im Bereich der verzerrten Gitarren. Und es gibt noch genügend Bands, die mit zünftigem Hardrock zu unterhalten wissen. Dazu gehören unter anderem folgende Bands.

MÄDHOUSE

aus Österreich predigen den Hardrock, und das verdammt deftig. Sie haben sich jetzt 2021 der Sache wieder angenommen und haben mit „Bad Habits“ eine neue Messe geschrieben. Ganze 15 Burner, die es krachen lassen. MÄDHOUSE sind verrückt und scheissen auf Etikette! Dies drückt alleine der Albumtitel „Bad Habits“ aus. Die Texte und Songtitel sind beileibe nicht lyrisch oder sonstwie anspruchsvoll. MÄDHOUSE kommen eher mit einer Leck-Mich-Am-Arsch-Einstellung daher und wollen niemanden belehren oder sozialkritisch sein. Und wenn man ihr mal nen richtig beschissenen Tag habt, dann wird die Mucke Euch katapultmäßig auf eine Gute-Laune-Wolke schießen und ihr zeigt der Welt von oben den dicken Mittelfinger. Versprochen! Michael Schinkels ETERNAL FLAME

ist ursprünglich eine Rockband der 80’er Jahre. 2004 trennten sich zunächst die Wege, bis im Jahre 2012 Michael Schinkel und Helmut Kohlpaintner eine Wiederauferstehung starteten. ETERNAL FLAME (Facebook) schaffen mit „Gravitation“ ein Wurmloch zwischen den 80’ern und der Moderne. Das Album zieht Euch hinein und verwöhnt Euch mit tollen Rockhymnen, gefühlvollen Balladen und auch ein wenig außergewöhnlichen Songs. Ganz formidabel ist ohne Frage die Leistung des Gitarristen Michael Schinkel. Es ist eine wahre Freude seinem Gitarrenspiel zuzuhören und insbesondere die Solos sind eine Klasse für sich. SOCIAL DISORDER mit „Love 2 Be Hated“

bringen frischen Wind in den Hardrock-Sektor. SOCIAL DISORDER (Facebook) schenken Euch mit „Love 2 Be Hated“ eine wahre Perle des Hardrock. Handwerklich ohne Fehl und Tadel und mit einem Sänger, der mit einer Wahnsinnsstimme gesegnet ist, sorgt die Band für grandiose Unterhaltung. Das sind alles hochkarätig eingespielte Songs, die einen mitreißen und begeistern. Dafür sorgen neben dem flotten melodischen „Dreaming“ auch fetzige bluesige Nummer wie „Down On My Knees“ oder ne Southern-Rock geprägte Nummer wie „Raise A Glass“ oder eben auch das sehr atmosphärische dunkel angehauchte „Love 2 Be Hated“, dass mit gefühlvoller Härte zu begeistern weiß. Die geniale Stimme des begnadeten Sängers Thomas Nordin zieht den Hörer umgehend in seinen Bann. (Review)

Heavy Rock

TIMECHILD

beherrschen diese Kunst zwischen den Welten der verführerischen warmen Melodik und dem wuchtigen mitreißenden Rock hin- und herzuspringen. „And Yet It Moves“ ist somit ein sehr aufregendes Album mit einer frechen Portion Coolness und heißen Rhythmen. Die Musik rockt schwer und heavy dahin und entwickelt dabei einen betörenden Groove, dem man sich kaum entziehen kann. TIMECHILD (Facebook) haben ein echt starkes Debütalbum hingelegt. Dies zeigt eindrucksvoll, dass man von der Band noch einiges erwarten darf. Diese Band sollte man jedenfalls auf dem Schirm haben. (Review)

STEPFATHER FRED mit „Like The Sea“

Heavy Rock roh und deftig serviert! Dabei werden die Grenzen zum Metal ausgelotet. Das ist purer ehrlicher Rock mit einer rauen Durchschlagskraft. STEPFATHER FRED (Facebook) gehen auf den Rummel, hauen den Lukas und lassen mit dem Hammerschlag „Like The Sea“ den Gong nicht nur scheppern, sondern explodieren. Ausnahmesänger Basti hat eine Powerröhre, die Euch erzittern lässt. Er kann Euer Herz aber auch mit einer gefühlvollen Offensive angreifen, die keinen Widerstand zulässt. Er ist ein sehr emotionaler Sänger, dem man jedes seiner gesungenen Worte sofort abkauft, weil er einfach ehrlich klingt. Dies trifft auch auf die vorherigen Alben zu, die ebenfalls nicht von schlechten Eltern sind. Blues Rock

STEW mit „Taste“

STEW (Facebook) haben mir ein Hörerlebnis geboten, dass in seiner Art dieses Jahr für mich einzigartig war. Also zumindest ist mir kein anderes Album untergekommen, dass mir mit dieser Art Heavy Blues Rock die Ohren unter Feuer gesetzt hat. Somit sind STEW natürlich in meiner Bestenliste des Jahres 2021 vertreten. Man spürt diese Freude an der Musik in jeder Faser der Songs und diese Freude reißt Euch förmlich mit. Das Album versprüht so viel Energie und Groove, dass sogar die Toten aus den Gräbern auferstehen würden, um ihre steifen Knochen zu rocken. (Review)

METALHEADs Top List 2021 – Part 1

Simply rad!

I already mentioned it in my review of the year. Despite the COVID-19 curse, everyone in the music industry worked their asses off. Bands, fans and everyone else did their part to fight through this crisis. It was even possible to have some concerts. But most importantly, bands and musicians have become very creative and released top-notch albums in 2021.

You can’t have the illusion of really taking into account all the releases of a year, because with the mass, it’s almost impossible. This is also true for the seasoned and diligent editors of ‚metal-heads.de‘. Especially it is the case when you don’t only have the well known acts on your screen, but also the underground acts and newcomers of the music business. But it’s these that don’t have to hide behind the big names of the scene in terms of quality and they often provide very positive experiences. So my personal journey through the year 2021 starts with „METALHEAD’s Top List 2021 – Part 1“.

A nice selection

I think we made a good selection at ‚metal-heads.de‘ and were able to present a good range. Fortunately there are also other webzines that share our passion. And so you can pick your personal highlights from all the best lists. The compilation of this list is not only a difficult task because of the huge number of releases, but also because the different styles are not as clearly separated as they used to be in the past. In addition, my taste in music is very broad, so I accumulate a long list of albums over the year.

Personally, I have reviewed round about 90 albums and I will once again recommend the albums to you that I was particularly enthusiastic about. But also the albums that do not appear here in the list are usually very worth listening to, because a selection is already made in advance for the albums that are presented here at ‚metal-heads.de‘. As it should be for an album of the year, it is directly at the top of the list. So let´s start with my album of the year.

Best album of the year 2021

SIGNUM DRACONIS with „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“

It’s a debut album of such quality in the realm of Symphonic Power Metal that it instantly became my album of the year. Why is that? Because I admire SIGNUM DRACONIS(Facebook))! The origin of this ambitious project „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ and the 11-year history of its creation are marked by incredible ambition and almost inhuman ambitious perseverance. It is breathtaking.

„The Divine Coemdy: Inferno“ is a truly divine album, which for me is elaborated in every way to the smallest detail, so that the listener does not get bored with a fabulous playing time of 95 minutes. If we speak of Symphonic Metal, then this album stands for it with every fiber. This is ensured not only by the songwriting and the excellent work of the band members, but also by the collaboration with a full orchestral ensemble (Bratislava Symphony Orchestra) and fantastic guest musicians such as vocalist Chiara Manese and Ksenia Glonty.

SIGNUM DRACONIS have created a magnificent monument with „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“. They have defied the demanding challenge and convince all along the line with their setting of a classic of world literature. This is a sublime work of art, which for me has definitely found a place in the ranks of the best concept albums. An album full of suspense and drama that is imbued with creative diversity and artistic skill. An intense profound journey that will enthrall you with a fascinating atmosphere. SIGNUM DRACONIS is the finest Italian symphonic Power Metal! A divine album!

Symphonic Metal

METALWINGS

from Hungary I would not like to leave unmentioned, even if the prize this year for the album of the year in the field of Symphonic Metal was already awarded. Because METALWINGS have also released the fantastic album „A Whole New Land“ this year. The Symphonic Metal of METALWINGS does not come along on a monstrous knockdown bombast wave. They approach the compositions a bit more filigree. But this does not mean that there is a lack of energy here. Because that is undoubtedly also present, but just paired with damn much feeling.

This interweaving of classical symphonic instruments in the songs are outstanding. Up to a damn good guitar solos everything is there what the heart desires. A defining feature is the violin playing of vocalist Stella. It is an infinitely soulful instrument that can embody a special power especially in connection with the metal sound. It is able to create a variety of emotions. (Review / Interview with Stella)

Power Metal

BLACK & DAMNED

Right at the beginning the German power metallers BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) make themselves known. Personally, I consider them to be an up-and-coming German band that caused quite a stir right away with their debut album „Heavenly Creatures“. With a very diverse offering, „Heavenly Creatures“ is one of the best power metal albums of 2021. It wasn’t enough for the throne yet, but it’s remarkable what a great debut album these guys have knocked out in a short amount of time. I know that next year the next album will follow directly. One can be more than curious what will await us. (Review / Interview)

RAGE

have released the new album „Resurrection Day“ this year again shortly after their strong last album „Wings Of Rage“ (2020) and you should not think that the gentlemen are running out of steam. The new album is very strong. This album has power and shreds more than violently through your ears. It’s crazy what a creative high-quality output RAGE (Facebook) offer. Similarly wild it goes on with the Greeks

FIREFORCE

The album „Rage Of War“ gave me a good start right at the beginning of the year. New bandmember Matt pleases me very well, both on the mic and on the guitar. With his rousing groovy solos he sets new accents in the overall high-quality sound of FIREFORCE (Facebook) . That’s why the steel FIREFORCE-Tank with penetrating shells also shoots itself into the row of the best power metal albums of 2021. BRAINSTORM with „Wall Of Skulls“

BRAINSTORM (Facebook) have produced for me anno 2021 with their album „Wall Of Skulls“ a damn awesome album, if not one of the best of their long career. The album has everything that makes a power metal album and is topped by the fantastic vocals of frontman Andy. The songs offer a whole range of songs from highly melodic to attacking. Brilliant anthems included! My editorial colleague Uwe was also very taken with the album and was of the opinion that it was a great performance and that you can’t get past the album as a fan.

Heavy Metal

WITCHBOUND

pay homage to classic melodic Heavy Metal with great guitar riffs and superb melodies. The witch’s guild always has the pepper sack up their sleeve and spice up the potion in the witch’s cauldron with it. These are lovingly composed and interpreted songs that tell a lively wonderful story for an hour. So they let a healthy portion of power flow in that a mixture of gripping Heavy Metal and crisp Power Metal is created. It has become a beautiful versatile album, with which WITCHBOUND (Facebook) excellently captures the spirit of the old days and brings it to life. (Review)

NEKROMANT

from Sweden have created with the album „Temple Of Haal“ a captivating journey that will make you feel the music with a remarkable atmosphere. With its epic doomy approaches and cleverly constructed songs, the world of the old gods and sagas of NEKROMANT (Facebook) is revived. The electrifying solos and riffs, accompanied by a formative bass and fueled by lively drums, combine with the vocals to open the gateway to another world. DEE SNIDER

has a few years under its belt. And has he become calmer? No, by no means. DEE SNIDER (Facebook) ignited a real banger this year with „Leave A Scar“. With proudly swollen chest and from a truely rocker heart the band around DEE SNIDER smashes out a remarkable with Rock and Metal soaked creed. The album consists of outstanding and very good tracks. You won’t find any rivets. The level is consistently high, even if not every song reaches the level of the absolute top area. So remains an album that is definitely one of the best that I have heard this year so far in this area (Review here) But this album was exceeded by

MANIMAL with „Armageddon“

„Armageddon“ is the best Heavy Metal album of the year for me. Why? MANIMAL (Facebook) have set a monument to classic Heavy Metal with „Armageddon“. „Armageddon“ has no weaknesses and offers one killer after another. An album must first and foremost entertain! And this album does that undisputedly! The men are on fire and give full throttle! Besides the razor-sharp riffs, there are heaps of awesome guitar solos. The ultra heavy bass always sounds through nicely and together with the massive drums they drive the sound as a strong beating heart again and again. Singer Samuel Nyman is an absolutely awesome hellish singer who sets the sound under fire. (Review)

Hardrock

One of the most classic genres in the field of distorted guitars. And there are still enough bands that know how to entertain with hearty Hardrock. These include, among others, the following bands.

MÄDHOUSE

from Austria preach Hardrock, and damn solidly at that. They have now taken up the cause again in 2021 and have written a new mass with „Bad Habits“. A whole 15 burners that let it rip. MÄDHOUSE are crazy and shit on etiquette! This expresses alone the album title „Bad Habits“. The lyrics and song titles are by no means lyrical or otherwise sophisticated. MÄDHOUSE rather come along with a lick-my-ass attitude and don’t want to teach anyone or be socially critical. And if you have a really shitty day, the music will shoot you catapult-like on a cloud of good mood and you show the world from above the big middle finger. That’s a promise! (Review)

Michael Schinkels ETERNAL FLAME

is originally a Rockband of the 80’s. In 2004 they parted ways, until in 2012 Michael Schinkel and Helmut Kohlpaintner started a resurrection. ETERNAL FLAME (Facebook) create with „Gravitation“ a wormhole between the 80’s and the modern age. The album pulls you in and spoils you with great Rock anthems, soulful ballads and also a little extraordinary songs. Quite formidable is without question the performance of guitarist Michael Schinkel. It is a real pleasure to listen to his guitar playing and especially the solos are in a class of their own.(Review)

SOCIAL DISORDER with „Love 2 Be Hated“

bring fresh wind into the Hardrock sector. SOCIAL DISORDER (Facebook) present you with „Love 2 Be Hated“ a true pearl of Hardrock. Craftsmanship without fault and with singer Thomas Nordin who is blessed with an insane voice, the band provides terrific entertainment. These are all top-class songs that carry you away and inspire you. This is ensured in addition to the snappy melodic „Dreaming“ also groovy bluesy number like „Down On My Knees“ or a Southern Rock influenced song like „Raise A Glass“ or even the very atmospheric dark „Love 2 Be Hated“ that knows how to inspire with soulful hardness. The ingenious voice of the gifted singer Thomas Nordin immediately captivates the listener. (Review)

Heavy Rock

TIMECHILD

master the art of jumping back and forth between the worlds of seductive warm melodicism and massive rousing Rock on their album „And Yet It Moves“. This is a very exciting album with a cheeky dose of coolness and hot rhythms. The music rocks along heavy, developing a beguiling groove that is hard to resist. TIMECHILD (Facebook) have created a really strong debut album. This shows impressively that you can still expect a lot from the band. In any case, this band should be on your radar.(Review)

STEPFATHER FRED with „Like The Sea“

Heavy Rock, served raw and hearty! Thereby the borders to metal are explored. STEPFATHER FRED (Facebook) go into the ring and hit you with a big punch that knocks you to the boards. But you can’t stay down… so get up and fight on! Exceptional singer Basti has a power tube that will make you tremble. But he can also attack your heart with a soulful offense that doesn’t allow any resistance. He is a very emotional singer, who you immediately believe every word he sings, because he just sounds honest. (Review)

Blues Rock

STEW with „Taste“

STEW (Facebook) have offered me a listening experience that was unique in its kind for me this year. So at least I have not come across any other album that has set my ears under fire with this kind of Heavy Blues Rock. Thus STEW are naturally represented in my best list of the year 2021. You can feel this joy in the music in every fiber of the songs and this joy literally pulls you along. The album sprays so much energy and groove that even the dead would rise from the graves to rock their stiff bones. (Review)
